MJ v. 2dr XJ compatibility?

Recommended Posts

I would like to someday convert my shortbed 89 MJ from 2.5 to 4.0 and from 4spd to either 5spd or auto. My question is ,as I'm shopping for donors, does it matter if the XJ is a 4dr or 2dr? I know there are a lot more 4dr but if I can get a 2dr I can also use the bucket seats to replace my vinyl bench. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

MJ rear driveshafts are about a foot longer than XJ rear shafts, so you'll either need the proper junkyard MJ shaft, get a custom one built, or have your current 2wd shaft cut down to size (which is what I did on mine)

:brows: :hijack:  Don't want to be accused of hijacking this thread, do the 2 dr rear quarter panels work, more importantly are the wheel wells compatible? :dunno:

no

they are not

FYI, the MJ has bigger wheel wells.

Thanks for all the input Guys! If I don't find an MJ with the set up I want, I'll go the XJ donor route. Problem is I am not a mechanical wizard like some of you so I would have to pay for a lot of the swap work and that could really rack up the cost. Whichever I decide, I will post up on CC. :typing:

Jeeps have a way of transforming people into a mechanical wizard. own one long enough and you'll be amazed at what you'll know how to do.

Now that's funny right there, and Oh so true as well.

You are right about the 2 door XJ seats being nice to have. But the 4 door is much easier to find. You can look for 2 door seats then when you get them all you really need is the frame with the tilt mechanism. Everything else can be swapped from the four door seats. It cost me about $150 to swap in good cushions from one set of seats, good covers from another set all onto a set of XJ 2 door buckets. There is an Ecology yard off of Mission in Oceanside(?). I check it every few months, but you are relatively close to it. Suggest you check there for 2 door seats. May take a while, but you should find them eventually. Hey, you have time, right?

I have also seen one or two Comanche's there over the last 18 months.

I am in Scripps Ranch, drop me an email/PM.
