87Chief
I have a 1987 jeep Comanche, I plan on taking a 10 hour trip to get it back home... Athens Alabama to fort mill south Carolina... It has a some problems... It veers to the right, steering wheel wobbles, and some oil around valve cover... I was wondering what should I bring/take with me on the trip... I will try to go to shop and get the veering right problem fixed, but I will also bring some extra oil, antifreeze and a toolbox... It has 2.5l 4 cyl 5 speed any help will be appreciated!! Jerry
Take all the tool you can carry! :wrench: Murhpy's law says if you don't, it'll crap out on you, take them all and you probably won't need any of them. Also carry plenty of water in case you have a leaky cooling system, top up as you go to get home. Good luck on your journey! Let us know how it goes . . . dasbulliwagen
I agree on the Murphy's law thing... the one tool you don't bring will be the one you need. Lots of water, lots of oil....motor and gear, Fix a flat, tire plugger kit, brake fluid... big bottle or two, blankets or cardboard to lay on, rags, make sure your spare is aired up.. or bring more than one spare, if its 4x4, bring a few quarts of atf for the transfer case, anything you can think of that might happen and have a roadside fix. An extra battery if you have one! Any spare parts like an alternator, maybe a selection of hoses. And most important of all, your AAA membership card, and a cell phone, and a credit card to rent a UHaul and a tow dolly.
cracker
Don't forget a fire extinguisher.
87Chief
We were thinking about renting a uhaul thing so the jeep would be all the way up on the trailer... Would be 100 something dollars.. That would probably pay for gas on the trip if the Comanche went alone... Should we do that instead? Towing with a '07 expedition 2wd
1990 Pioneer 4x4
If it starts keep it running til ya get er home. Don't forget the cell phone to call the auto club. Good luck!

nitroxsteve
You can also rent a tow dolly from UHAUL for arund $65.00 (last time I checked) keep in mind you will need to drive a little slower than with a trailer and you probably need to unhook the drive shaft. Good Luck
kyleag89
I would tow it honestly. It it has a shake than more than likely it has death wobble, and that will make your trip a miserable one! :smart:
87Chief
Thanks for the info guys! When I go up there I will drive it around and stuff to make sure things are good, like getting the engine running and I might just tow it home on a UHAUL trailer... I don't like using the dolly trailer just because I don't know if something will happen to the truck
dasbulliwagen
Ive used the dollys many times very sucessfully on various cars, the MJ should be no different, disco the rear driveshaft, unlock the column, and hit the road.

Why unlock the column? With the front wheels strapped into the dolly there's no way they can turn relative to the body anyway.

The dolly's Ive used didnt have much turn to the table that the front tires sit on, and you needed to unlock the column to get proper articulation when turning. Rymanrph
He said he is buying it.. That is why it is 10 hours away. It just said I have a truck that I'm going to be bringing home, but nothing about purchasing it (even though you're probably right). I drove 4 hours to get mine, but 10 hours is a long drive to buy a vehicle. Good luck. The last guy who asked about taking his truck on a long trip didn't make it (in the truck). 87Chief
Sorry guys, It's 10 hours away because it is my Uncle's and he is wanting to get rid of it... It was my Grandfather's, but my Uncle gave him a dollar for it, so now I'm giving him a dollar for it. My Uncle never used it, just to haul stuff, but it's been sitting in storage for awhile now and he finally decided to let it go to me and I live 10 hours away from him..
