comancheman
i just bought a donor xj and it has the np 242 with the non vac-disconnect front axle. i know that the after market support for the 242 isnt as good but i like the 4x4 options better than the 231. is there any reason why i shouldnt swap the 242 in place of the 231? i also wanted to know whether i could use the nonvac disconnect front axle with the 231 t-case its an 1989 xj limited and a 1990 comanche pioneer also whats that compressor for that goes on when i turn the key on? Pete M
How many 242 Comanches are out there? There will be one more out there as soon as my 90 is finished. :D I like the all-wheel-drive option for a daily driver.
whowey
The full-time 4wd is phenomal for wintery weather. Especially the sloppy crap we see up here.
comancheman
ok guys thanks for the input looks like I'm goin w/ the 242 nonvac disconnect frnt axle anything i should watch out for when I'm doin the swap or is it pretty straight forward
87manche
as long as the inputs match it'll be a bolt in swap. You'll need the shift gate, the bezel and the linkage, since you've got a donor it's cake. What trans is in each Jeep?
casey
also whats that compressor for that goes on when i turn the key on? That would be the fuel pump. ;)
Oizarod115
the 242 really is amazing for icy conditions. make ABSOLUTELY SURE its running ATF and NOT gear oil. that will kill the case in a matter of months. and the splines should match. looks like you're set to go. KYMJ
Keep us posted. I'm very interested in your swap. I've always liked the 242 in my Grands. Hope you're doing the swap soon. Good luck! Are you starting with a 2wd?
comancheman
its a 4x4 and ill hopefully be doin the swap within the next few weeks but first i need to replace the floor. does any one know if i could cut the front section of floor out of the xj? 87manche
it will be close, but it won't fit. MJ's have a thikcer floor section than XJ, making us stronger. Check sherman parts for a floorpan replacemtn if it's that bad. If not, get a hammer and some sheetmetal.
