No this wasn't the MJ, it was the Mustang... But this does apply to 2wd MJs with integral hubs.

 

Finally drove the mustang on the highway last night, first time its been on the highway in at least 30 years. About ten minutes in, and I hear a BANG followed by grinding, and the car pulls to the right, HARD. I managed to keep control, and slowly got the car onto the side of the highway as it tried to mate with a guardrail. I get out and find THIS

The rotor hat separated from the center piece, these rotors were BRAND NEW, albiet 2 years old. I bought them from Advance Auto.

I plan on taking these into Advance on monday and raising hell. If there were another car next to me, someone could've gotten killed. The only thing that was holding my wheel on at that point was the brake caliper. These admittedly were the cheapo rotors, but these were dangerous.

 

 

Anyway I was wanting to ask you guys' opinion on the matter, any reason these could've been caused to fail besides a poorly made rotor?

Ouch! I have never seen the breakes fail like that, even with the wheel and tire takeing some MAJOR damage first.

 

 

 

 

Please keep us posted as to what the auto parts store response to you bringing the defective parts back

Yeah. I want to hear about their response also. The best way to recognize a reliable business is how they honor their warranties. A couple years ago I replaced a water pump on a Ford van. When I started it it ran about 30 seconds and BAM! Big racket. The shaft snapped between the pulley and housing putting the fan into the radiator. . Advance Auto replaced the water pump, radiator, fan, fan belt, 2 gal anti-freeze and re imbursed me $300 for labor.

And I never saw, or heard of any rotor separating like that.

No, your not.........been into Fords long before I tripped over the Jeeps :yes:

 

I too have been having problems with Advance parts, installed a new set of wheel bearing on the E350, put on 1600 miles and had the outer bearing fail :eek: That cost me a $150 tow bill, upper and lower ball joints, spindle and hub, and calipers.......Oh, and another front end alignment that was 1 month old.........I pulled all 4 wheel bearings, and they credit me, but wouldn't cover any additional costs :fs2:

 

What kicks me, is the life time warranties, there system only goes back 2-1/2 years, and they will only replace some of the parts one time........try it, I have. You better keep all your receipts from them, if you do need to go back further that that time period.

 

I will agree that they do stand behind there products, and depending on the store, they have some helpful, intelligent counter people. It's nice to call the store, and have them do a starter warranty from another store, over the phone, when your 60 miles away. Been there, done that :D

 

Yea, I'll keep buying from Advance, they beat the "other" stores hands down.

But you would think even cheap chinese rotors would last more than 50 miles

 

Yeah, you would think so, since I'm sure those rotors were magnafluxed, x-rayed, and put through other rigorous quality control procedures. :shake:

Yeah, luckily I don't believe it damaged anything except the rotors, pads, and bearings... I havent had the chance to tear everything down yet, and check out the spindle (work too much)

This is actually not that rare...ZJ's had that crappy 2-piece design on the factory rotors. That is almost exactly how they fail. I had two sets do that before I got aftermarket ones that aren't that design. The first time I had it.. I pulled the outer ring off and layed it on the floor, and then sat there trying to figure out how to pull off the center hat... Finally it struck me... grab it pull it off... duuhhhh....

here's an update...

Brought the rotors up to advance today and the guy handed me a new one. As there was nothing visibly wrong with the other it didnt get swapped.

 

Umm, I am not sure I would be OK with "The other one had nothing visibly wrong" approach to trust my butt in that car... Anyway, as with any brake job, you should mirror sides when replacing. The first one failed without warning, what makes you think the other one you got in at the same time will be ok?
