Sources Say: Jeep Pickup Truck Coming for 2012

A version of a Jeep pickup shown to Chrysler dealers during a recent dealers meeting in Orlando, Fla., has been greenlit for production, according to PickupTrucks.com sources.

On Tuesday, Jeep CEO Mike Manley reportedly showed dealers a pickup truck that’s said to closely resemble the well-received Jeep Gladiator concept from 2005.

Industry sources have told us that production of the Jeep pickup is expected to start in the third quarter of 2011, with the pickup badged as a 2012 model. It’s said to be based on the four-door Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited platform but with a two-door regular cab configuration with extra space behind the front seats for storage.

Jeep hasn't offered a pickup for sale to consumers in North America since the 1992 Jeep Comanche ended production.

Manley told PickupTrucks.com in June that he was interested in small pickup trucks because of their popularity worldwide.

Todd Goyer, head of Jeep brand communication and product planning, said the company had no comment about the news of a Jeep pickup.

HOPE ITS TRUE!!!!

There would be a market for a smaller truck. All of the once-mini offerings are midsize or better now and too close to the fullsize. IIRC that's way the Ranger got axed and the Dakota will follow suit, at least as a body on frame 7/8's sized truck, IMHO.

The TaTa from India is getting buzz even though "made in india" means P.O.S.

I'd love for this to be true,

tho my guess is if they do finally do it,

it'll be as an upscale JK, loaded with options.

As much as I'd like to have a full on Rubi JK Pickup,

there would a probably be better chance of me pulling the trigger on a cheaper stripped version (especially if there's still no V8 option by then).

he is referring to the stupid way auto makers make trucks nowadays.

godammit their trucks. they used to be made to ride rough tow big stuff and go offroad.....

Actually, most modern 1/2 ton trucks outperform the one-ton's from a couple of decades ago in most capacities, especially towing. And a modern 1-ton puts the old ones to shame. My first tow vehicle, and '81 C30 crew cab with a 350/auto, would barely move and squatted like crazy towing 7,500 #'s. It had a 145 HP, less than a 4.0 and less than half what a new V8 makes. A new dodge Power Wagon may be the most versatile and capable mass-produced civilian pick-up ever.

Our memories of the "good old days" often gloss over the bad stuff.

X2.

People tend to forget what made old cars obsolete.

truth! technology has increased in leaps and bounds over the years.. not just in powetrains and cool gizmos, but also in structural rigidity and quality of construction. here's a crash test between a '59 Bel Air and an '09 Impala...

  • 3 months later...

The jeep Gods have answered my prayers  Now... where did I put that winning lottery ticket???

The 2013 Gladiator will most likely be a cross between the 2005 concept and the Nukizer M715. It will be powered by the new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, 280 horsepower (209 kW) at 6,400 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. (353 Nm) of torque at 4,800 rpm, that sits under the hood of the 2011 Grand Cherokee, and will power all Jeep Wrangler in 2012. The bed will be shortened to 5ft too add two more feet to the passenger compartment, but will use a tailgate extender (like the Ford Explorer Sport) to accommodate larger objects.

Like the current Wrangler the new Jeep truck will be built in Toledo and will sit atop a front Dana 30 and rear Dana 44 axles, and be mated with a new Fiat transmission. The word is the Jeep is consider using the Gladiator name or reviving the Scrambler moniker.
