1985 2.1L Diesel Trans and T-Case?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know what trans and transfercase would be behind a 1985 Cherokee with the 2.1L diesel? I'm into weird Jeep stuff and I found one for sale pretty cheap... the guy says it runs like a champ, but the trans falls out of gear and the transfer case growls. I know the early front axles and drive shafts in them were junk, but I have a 30/35 set in 4.10 gears that are just sitting around.

It has a five speed in it... maybe an AX-15 and a 231 combination would bolt up behind it? Any help or advice would be great!

if it's a manual trans it should be an AX-5, and the t-case for an 85 should be an np-207. AX-15 won't bolt up, but anything from any year 2.5L will.

my Liberty CRD has 3.73s. I'd have no problems with 4.10s behind a diesel with even less power.

Also, there's nothing really different about the front axle in an 85 (about the same as any MJ front axle), but yes, the front driveshaft was pretty darn pathetic. :D

If the diesel has the same bellhousing bolt pattern that the 2.5L has, he could use one of the hard to find dakota AX-15's bellhousing that came behind their 4 banger. Forgot what year they were but it's the cheap way to get a AX-15 behind our 2.5L and he could use whatever AX-15 he can get his hands on then. I'm thinking early 90's. :dunno: Or am I out to lunch on this one. :???:

Hmmm... For 2.5s it's not quite as easy as just finding that bellhousing. But the 2.1 might not have as many issues. hard to say since I can only assume the 2.1 would be similar to the 2.5 inside the bellhousing.

hmmm... Blazing new territory... :D

Ive read about the dakota bell housing swap, from what i can tell its not hard to do.

here is a write up i found http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=956031

advance adapters also makes a conversion kit to go AX5-AX15 but its $450-$500

I was looking for that link to throw in but couldn't find it.

Went to save the link and I found were I put it, under AX-15 swap.

Here's a pic of the two side by side from that link. Shows a good comparison of the bellhousings.

Guy did a nice write up and the parts list is great.

Oh and like Pete said, it's a little more than just swapping the bellhousing.

Don't know about what bolts up, but 4.10 gears sound awfully steep for a diesel.

not too steep. a 2.1 renault turbo diesel with 5 speed would need (and comes with) 4.10 gears.

the transmission is an ax5. the transfer case is an np207.

there is one problem, if you're going to fix it...you need to know how to pull an ax5 apart. the reason for this is that the renault 2.1 ax5 has a different input shaft than the typical jeep ax5.

an ax15 WON'T bolt behind a 2.1, as there is no bellhousing to make it fit..

how much is this cherokee? you could probably make a quick buck selling it to me...I'm always looking for parts for my 86 comanche diesel.

nice idea, but the 2.1 has a completely different bellhousing from a 2.5.

Any idea what they get for mileage?

city around 26, highway up to 35mpg.

my dad's 86 comanche turbo diesel has a cracked head and a crack in the #3 cylinder wall., and still gets 33mpg etc.

these are an interference motor. they require frequent timing belt adjustment, and the timing belt MUST be replaced every 90,000 miles. chances are, if you're buying it, you should replace the timing belt. do it now before it blows. if it blows, it will break the rocker assemblys off the valve train, and maybe bend valves...the only parts place for them that I've found was in iowa, but they're out of business. that aside, you *may* still be able to find a winnebego lesharo parts place that has parts for it.

there are no interchangeable parts w/ any other jeep when it comes to things like the alternator, power steering pump, vacuum pump (yes, it has a vacuum pump...if it goes you cannot replace it except used parts. if it goes, you will have no CAD functions and no heat), and even the starter is used. it's a paris rone (or however you spell it) starter that you'll be lucky to find anywhere.

all in all, very rare parts.

I checked that starter on Napa pro link

there are 3 options

BSH SR6505X bosch direct drive $385 list

NAE 17005 direct drive Paris-Rhone $223 list

NAE 17085 Gear reduction Paris-Rhone $200 list

they are not showing them in stock but might be worth checking

there were also 3 alternators listed 2 Paris-Rhone and 1 Bosch i wonder if the bosch parts might be easier to find.

I'm getting listings for most of the parts but they are all saying none in stock.

I've checked with napa and the parts are in their list, but they can't get them (or don't want to take the effort to try.

Pete, I picked up a complete, BRAND NEW motor for the diesel for $75 on some guys trailer...noticed it from the oil pan, it was upside down and destined for scrap because he couldn't figure out how to make it work as a log splitter motor :P

This was fun, but I moved too slow on it... the guy sold it to some kid who said he would lift it and "go out and play with it". :(

crying shame. I hate when idiots don't know what they have, and don't care. that thing may as well have gone to cash for clunkers... a diesel cherokee is WAAAY more than any hick can handle
