MJ Production Figures

Recommended Posts

hello !

I am the proud owner of a 92 MJ 4x4 4.0 SWB 5 speed. I am going to build the truck for offroad racing in the BF Goodrich Offroad Series we have here in Nova Scotia.

I am a big jeep fan. this one is my 6th, but my first MJ.

I am trying to find out the production figures for the 1992 year. I know that a little over 3100 were built that year but just wondering how rare mine is ??

Does anyone have any info ??

thanks , I`ll be checking in regularly for more tech !!

Look at your driver door for a build date. The later your date is, the closer you are to the last of the build. We have a member here that has an MJ built on April 27th, 1992. Usually they stop making that model year in June of that year... SO check yours...

I have general production numbers on my site : www.comanchemj.1hwy.com

I think there were 952 or so made IN the year '92. (Jan to end of run)

Welcome to the group! Any pics?

Rob L.

The below is from Rob's site. Don't know where he got the figures from, hopefully he'll chime in.

Production numbers:

1985: 29,245

1986: 33,386

1987: 43,070

1988: 43,718

1989: 25,311

1990: 9,576

1991: 5,188

1992: 952

EDIT: Never mind. :D

I'd like to know more about the numbers too,

AMC/Jeep released all sorts of different numbers, for different reasons (stockholders meetings, press releases, internal documents, dealership documents, tax purposes, etc).

For different AMC & Jeep model's I've seen numbers that show:

vehicles built during a model year, vehicles built during a physical year, vehicles sold during model, or physical year, US market vehicles only, US + export vehicles (production, or sales, physical, or model year), including, or not including partial built knock down units, including, or not including preproduction & test vehicles to be destroyed, etc etc.

:???:

Either way, it doesn't look like many were made (I'd REALLY like to see the longbed vs shortbed breakdowns too. :D )

My numbers are sourced from different jeep history books that actually had the same numbers.

But note: These are "Production" numbers. Meaning, they are the number of trucks produced. So, there are actually more than 952 1992 MJ's, but seeing as they start making them the year before, and run into the model year halfway, there were only - 952 - made in the actual 1992 year (Jan 01, 1992, to end of run).

Its hard for some to understand, but I used to work at a dealer, so it comes like second nature to me.

I was gonna post that on the NSJC board but I'll probably get more support here ;)

Seriously you should just trade me for my old BFG series XJ, I'll even throw in a good replacement motor for the toasted one that's in it now. I'd love to see another MJ in the series but it'll hurt me to see one cut up into a race truck, especially a rare '92 model.

BTW I've never been able to find any kind of breakdown on the production numbers either.

That makes sence, especially with the low count for 1992,

but what about the numbers for model year 85's produced before 1/1/'85 (= 1984 numbers)?

Unless MJ's had a mid-85 introduction, and production didn't start till after 1/1/'85 :dunno:

The MJ was "rolled out" on July 1, 1985 as an '86 model.

lol trust me it`s not going to be cut up. i am planning on running in the stock class again. Just going to add a roll bar and a nice suspension. this one is a keeper.

so 952 is the total production for the 92 year ?? I read it as 3100 total and assumed the (952) made in 92 and the rest were made in 91.

wow that is rare !

no. 3100 is a more likely number for the total 92 MJs made. 952 '92s were made in the calender year 1992. the rest of the 92s were made in the calender year 1991.

And these numbers aren't set in stone either, since Jeep continues to resist giving out any data on the production numbers of a 20 year old truck. :dunno: :fs1:

I even have one of those fancy coins that commerates the release on July 1st, '85... I know some of you other guys do also... :brows:

And I vote to keep it stock. 1992 MJ's are rare enough over here, but in Nova Scotia? 8)

Most likely one of less than 50 over there...

i am going to check the door tag and find out when it was built. as for keeping it stock, my only major mods are going to be a mild 4.6 , fuel cell, partial rollcage, and some suspension upgrades, possibly an 8.8 rear. I love these trucks and Jeeps make great offroad racers , but around here every Cherokee has the same issue, weak rear frames and ROT. I am currently racing a 96 XJ which I had to build a rear frame for, because the unibody simply gave out. The MJ gives me at least half of a boxed frame to work with...and besides....they look frickin cool !!

Have you checked http://jeep.avtograd.ru/VIN/vin_en.asp to decode your VIN?

The 86/87 parts catalog has J in the 8th position as: 1986 "XLS" model (Metric Ton)

I was gonna post that too Tony , I was thinking the same thing , Kinda a shame to turn it into a race truck . There are a few around Johnnie cheap . One in middleton , a 91 shortbox 6cyl 5 spd for $500 with 160 km's on it . Seen it on Kijiji .

lmao, this is the one I bought :D the box is shakey, the floor and rockers need a lot of work, and dude didn`t have the registration papers, so she is going to be built for offroad racing and hopefully a few NSJC runs for next year
