Axles and gears

Recommended Posts

An '85 4-cyl automatic might have 3.55, 3.73, or 3.31 gears. The front axle will bolt right into your MJ. On the rear axle, the spring pads have to be cut off and moved from the top of the axle tubes to the bottom.

Shouldnt' be stamped on the outside of the diff or do I need to pull the cover to be sure?

If it is still there, and legible, there may be a tag attached to one of the differential cover bolts that will have the gear ratio information on it.

Otherwise, I agree with Eagle, they will not be 4.10 gears, and there will be a little work involved on the rear axle, but nothing to terrible.

I have found that there is usually a tag (or the remainders of a tag) on the front differential. It may require decoding. I have never found a tag on a rear axle, other than one indicating the presence of a Trac-Lok.

A tag fell off the D35 on the XJ, completely illegible, so I went out and checked for a trac-lok. If it has it, it's completely dead.

After 8 hours of going through every service manual, parts book, data book & factory brochure I have,

I made a list of this stuff, and it's as correct as that information will allow.

Some will say it's wrong, or they had x.xx in an xx, or whatever, and that's fine.

None of the Jeep's I've had, or taken apart have conflicted with this list, but that doesn't mean it takes into effect every regional option, or special order available.

I will say I've heard people swear to combo's that the parts don't even exist in the parts books,

so take everything (this list included) with a grain of salt.

what would a 6cly 5 speed 2wd have for rear end gerars ??

If the 6-cyl is a 4;0L it will have 3.07 gears. No options.

If the 6-cyl is a 2.8L V6, it could have 4.10s, 3.73s, or possibly 3.55s.

Yes, the 2.5 4 cylinder was the only motor available in every year XJ and MJ.

(very) minor point,

but there were no 2001 4cyl XJ's.

(unless they snuck some in for fleet models, or something, since the books don't show them)

I've seen several for sale at local dealerships and on CL.

Anything's possible, but they killed the SE (and the 2.5L with it) after 00'.

To make it even simpler, they even dumped the 49 state emissions 4.0L.

(leaving just the low emissions 4.0L, with a gazzilion o2 sensors, and pre-cats for 01'.)
