mvusse
Time to start a new project thread. But since it's not an MJ, I guess it goes in the pub. I acquired this 94 Cherokee last Tuesday: 4.0, AX15/231 8.25/D30 3.07 gears (verified today) and ancient Alpine CD player with 4 new speakers. Today I pulled it into the heated shop at work and went over it top to bottom. Changed oil (old oil was black, and had Fram pos filter) with synth 10W30 and Pur-One filter Changed t-case fluid. Old was black, supposed to be red. Changed front and rear axle oil, old was black and more like sludge than oil. At least no chocolate milk like what came out of the D30 on the MJ. Gave every fitting a few shots of grease also. I then dove into the lights. No backup lights, don't know why yet, but I'm thinking switch on transmission. Turn signal dash indicators would light up when lights were on, and parking lights didn't work. Turn signals do, though. Turns out both sockets have good signal on all 3 wires, but sockets themselves have a faulty ground. Still need to buy new sockets and splice them in. Also noticed tow hook brackets are bolted on with bumper bracket bolts, but have no bolts on the back frame tie-in. Need to go to hardware store to buy some hardware. There are wire splices all over the place. Some was for amp for subs, some for dixie horn (horn still there but not hooked up any more). Need to pull all that crap out and double check radio power wiring. Also need a rear wiper, as the arm has been broken off. Even so, I don't know if it works or not. And found a large hole in the floor between driver's seat and door, with 2 license plates jammed in between the floor and seat bracket to try to patch is. May need to address that with either sheet metal or prefabbed floor pans this summer. I also need to flush the cooling system, but will hold on that until we are done with freezing temperatures. Might want to make sure I have money for a radiator before I do, as it is so badly rotted It's a miracle that it doesn't leak (yet). It's also getting a 2" budget lift using parts I have laying around once the weather warms up. 1.75" spacers up front, 2" blocks in back. More distant plans include rocker guards, custom rear bumper, 4.5" lift, possibly 6.5" and 33x12.50s.
mvusse
Also planned to take rear wheels off to check out the brakes as I have hardly any brakes on the rear wheels and the parking brake doesn't hold the car at all. Might just need adjusted, or might be more serious. But... I snapped off my 1/2 to 3/8 reducer on the first lug nut. Guess I need to invest in a 1/2" drive 3/4" deep socket. GrimmJeeper
i would agree with you on the no backup lights being the switch on the transmission. if its the AW4 automatic the Neutral safety switch is easily rebuildable (a new one is well over $100) and if you just clean it and re pack it with dieletric grease it will give you years more of trouble free operation. there are many writeups on lahardcore@gmail.com and i'll try to talk you through it, its not very hard to do. although if it is a manual trans i have no idea how to fix the lights and none of this will matter to you :D well i just noticed you said its an AX-15, so none of this applies to you :D i'll dig around and see if i can find out anything about the NSS on the manual XJs. mvusse
Yesterday I spliced in new sockets for the parking/turn signal lights up front. Both work like a charm now. Today I moved my tailpipe over a bit so it doesn't rattle against the hitch receiver any more, and found the source of the burned rubber smell I smell once in a while: Yup, idler pulley doesn't have a bearing any more. It has some miscellaneous parts of a bearing and ceased. Also went to stick some more bolts through the tow hook brackets only to realize it's not gonna work. Is the 94 up frame different from the 93 and older?
reson46
Also went to stick some more bolts through the tow hook brackets only to realize it's not gonna work. Is the 94 up frame different from the 93 and older? I didn't notice any differences besides more holes for a RHD steering box on the later models. I've used the same tow hook brackets on '90, '94, and '98 XJs. Willy
mvusse
I will try to remember to take some pictures of the brackets. They are just not going to work the way they are.
mvusse
Idler pulley is fixed. I needed more seatbelts than the Comanche had to offer, so I cannibalized it to fix the Cherokee.
mvusse
Last time I tried to remove the rear wheels to inspect the brakes I snapped my 1/2 to 3/8 reducer again. So after buying a new tool (3/4 deep 1/2" drive socket) I tried again today. Success! Passenger side adjuster cable had too long of a spring on it. McGuyvered it and it works now. Driver side adjuster has ceased. Not even with with a pair of linesmans plier and a pipe wrench could I break loose either the threaded end or the other end. But I forgot to measure the diameter of the drum to see which one I need to buy  Gonna have to take the wheel off again, but not now (dark out), not tomorrow (driving MJ to work and supposed to thunderstorm with 1" plus of rain). Also took some pics of the tow hook brackets. If they turned out I will post them in the next post.

reson46
Any pictures of the whole thing? All it looks like there is that you just need to line up the holes. Willy
mvusse
I hit them with a hammer and they aint budging. Once the weather warms up OVER A WEEKEND I will take the bumper of and take a closer look to see if I can get them to line up. I also need to look at the brackets on my Comanche to see what is different (although they are from Custom 4x4). geez, we hit 67 degrees today and it was sunny most of the afternoon. Then 5 minutes before I go home it starts raining and we're under a severe thunderstorm warning. This weekend is supposed to be below freezing again. DirtyComanche
I think I put both of my XJ projects in the 'MJ projects' section. Did I sin?
mvusse
The PubGeneral chit-chat and everything non-tech or non-Comanche goes here MJ projects For sharing pictures of your continuing MJ projects I try to follow this. I also seem to remember a post somewhere specifying the projects forum is for MJs only, but can't find it. I did notice there are a few XJ projects in there, though. edit: found it. Feel free to post up anything you'd like in the Pub. While I agree that the forum should stay MJ-oriented, that doesn't mean that the members wouldn't love to see other projects. Just post it up in the Pub.
ComancheKid45
Cool....I'm most likely getting a 96 XJ next week and will probably start a project thread for it here also.....looks like your making good progress when ya can
Pete M
As if the rules are set in stone or something. :D You might as well put them in the projects forum. As long as they include lots of detail and pictures.
mvusse
Drove about 480 miles round trip to pick up 4 33x12.50x15s from Big Dawgz (Thanks, and great to meet you). 60mph on the way there: 20 mpg (19.88) 70mph on the way back: 20 mpg (20.26) So the HO gets better mileage at 70 than at 60, and going 70 it gets better than the 4.0 Renix/auto in my MJ. But the MJ still gets better at 60 (24 mpg).
mvusse
Added 2" lift blocks I had laying around. Before: After: I also replaced a bad front axle U joint yesterday and noticed the (1994) shaft itself is quite a bit thicker than my original (1987) MJ axles. Why would they redesign axles make them bigger and I assume stronger, if the weak point is the 5-260x U joints? Inspected the rear brakes as well. Driver side needs a new adjuster, everything else is A-OK. I just remembered why I never bought that adjuster: I STILL need to measure the diameter of the drum. :wall:

mvusse
Repaint is not happening any time soon, as I need to have my garage built AND have a floor in it first. But at some point It's probably going white.
dasbulliwagen
So.... whats the story on the trade??? Inquiring minds ( I use that term loosely) want to know! ;)
jimmy21669
The above aforementioned 94 2 door XJ is now mine, and the 87 MJ in the latter post is now Marcel's. Even swap....everyone happy....I had to get back to my 2 door XJ roots. Note the Jeep in my signature, that is my last 2 door....oh how I miss her....
