ROADLESS
You are right, it is an 87 as designated by the 'H' in the VIN#
whowey
....1JTML651XHT049647.... Okay, here is the vin run down. 1- US built J - Jeep T -truck M - 4.0l L - 5-spd manual tranny, part time t-case 65 - LWB 4-whl drive 1 - Not sure, FSM shows only letters (for the trim package) X - Check digit H - Model year 1987 T - Built in Toledo 049647 - serial number Edit- Got to thinking about that '1'. On a hunch I checked the vin on my 88 MJ. I have the same '1'. Mine is a custom ordered Metric Tonne, any chance you know whether yours was a custom order also??? By the looks of it i would say no to the custom order..pretty much a base truck...manual windows...idiot lights/not guages..so on..
mjeff87
My 87 has a 1 in that position also.....and believe me, it ain't no special order unit  (I've only ever seen one MJ that was less optioned than mine, in a junkyard once. It was so stripped it didn't even have a cigarette lighter, just a blank panel there!) Jeff
whowey
Maybe 1 there means base model. The FSM doesn't list base model either. Mine is a 'base model' but it had certain things ordered on.
Oizarod115
excessive oil in the filter could be blowby... my brother disconnected that hose and put it in a empty quart of oil empties it every once ina while. my guess would be you've got high mileage? -nick
fiatslug87
It's an '87. Run it through this Jeep VIN decoder http://jeep.avtograd.ru/VIN/vin_en.asp
jeepaholic
I gotta work on getting a title for it. 87manche
not sure about the 1, my vin is similar being a 4.0 LWB 4x4, my option code is P, and it's a pioneer. edit. The jeep VIN decoder says that's a control digit. Here's my VIn Control (check) digit calculation Symbol 1 J T M L 6 5 P 1 H T 0 2 8 9 4 8 Numeric value: 1 1 T 4 3 6 5 7 * 8 3 0 2 8 9 4 8 Weight factor: 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 10 * 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 Products: 8 7 18 20 12 18 10 70 * 72 24 0 12 40 36 12 16 The sum of all 16 products : 375 375 divided by 11 gives a remainder 1 Another words, 375 =( 34 x 11) + 1 Thus, on 9-th position of a VIN-code there should be a symbol

Mine is a 'base model' but it had certain things ordered on Already came upon that conclusion. But a base Metric Tonne got an 'F' in position 8, which is what is confusing. Mine is base trim, but has the Metric Tonne package on it. I've got all the external markers, the different springs, and the D44 but its got a 1 in the eighth position. Easy there whowey, I was just confirming the "maybe" and you’re correct about the Metric Ton Here's the list I have for position 8, the list is labeled as being for 1987-1990, but now I doubt its accuracy since when I just looked at my 1990 FSM, the 8th digit is the Engine. mjeff87
Just found this buried inside a zip file of the 88 FSM. This is what is says regarding the 8th digit on the VIN: 8 - Trim Package 1 * Custom 2 * Pioneer 3 * Chief 4 * Laredo 5 * Base 5 * Wagoneer 6 * Limited K * Cherokee Base (2WD) L * Pioneer (2WD) M * Laredo (2WD)

The VIN decoder seems to skip that value.

Guest
If it helps i can tell you that my 88 is a special order from the argentine goverment to jeep. The order was for about 200 units. I have a number 1 as 8th digit and the chrysler system in a dealer said it means COMANCHE BASE. Regards. Fernando
