Unimog Axles - crazy dream or expensive possiblity?

Recommended Posts

Ok, I've been losing sleep over this. I need to upgrade the 30/35 XJ axles I'm planning to put on my MJ build up and I keep thinking UNIMOG. Specifically Exaxt.com disc converted axles.

I figure- high range, AX5, on 38s using 2nd-3rd-5th will be close to using 1st-2nd-3rd on my TJ which has 3.73/32s.

Can the 5th gear take it? I know you're not supposed to use 5th offroad, but at highway speed?

The second factor is that I'm sportin a 2.5L. I don't think power won't be the issue but top-end speed and high RPMs will (thinking 55mph at 4-5K i need to look at my TJ again). Not really sure, it isn't like thinking about the diff between 4.10 and 4.88s.

The axles would be driveshaft driven instead of torque tube, sported on an 8" Skyjacker Rock-Ready XJ suspension. And it's meant to be a trailer queen, but that doesn't mean it will never see pavement.

So.. stupid waste of money?

Problems I haven't considered?

Any and all opinions are welcome. It just keeps rattling around my head- if I'm going to save $$ for axles, why not save for unimog axles?

Ah see that's exactly the sort of thing I hadn't considered. You think 13" is too much for 38s or 40s?

I suppose I could use 6" springs instead and it would be 11".

Yeah execpt I have this 8" skyjacker lift thats been sitting in my garage and I'm not good at selling things.

So like around 3" in the front and 3" in the back, keep it SUA. I can't believe I'm still considering this - you people are supposed to be talking me out of it! :D

Are you getting them narrowed?

If not, I forsee some oilpan clearance issues.

Also, the extra leverage from the portals will dictate a custom suspesion.

Limit your uptravel before it would hit. I would think narrowing them would make any clearance issues worse.

If you asking us what you should use.... I think you need to give me your money.. and I will show you how to spend it  To answer your question.. Moogs or d44's :thwak: what were you thinking when you asked that question.... Rockwells

There's a Unimog Wrangler being built in town on 44s and coilover front and rear. It's impressive.

Don't know where, but I heard Unimogs lift 11"?

Also, one of the benefits of portals is incredible ground clearance.

See where the axle housing is in comparison to the wheels? That's portals!

To do leaf under (or leaf at all) takes out a big reason to put these axles on.

While the axles are impressive, keep in mind, it'll be a b*tch. Also, parts are hard to get on this continent.

Sure would be wicked though.

The problem I assume with doing spring over on an MJ at 3" would mean getting flatter springs. I don't really see how doing SUA loses that much considering that 5" from portal -2" from SUA still gives you +3" over the same point on a non portal axle with SOA.

Given the need to use drop springs and propensity for axle wrap I think doing SUA and gaining 3" or so would be worth it. And the pumpkin wouldn't hang any lower with SOA or SUA.

Besides it's only in the back.

I think, considering my current parts pile and the state of my project I'm going to go ahead with the 8" build up and get a feeling for how tall that will be, then I can have a better idea about what height unimog axles will get me to. At the least it will be an excuse to buy another MJ in the future.

The mog 406 axles weight around 700lbs each - "more than a rockwell" as they say. I'm not sure how much the 404s weigh exactly, but I'm sure it's somewhere on google...

Ah... http://www.teximog.net/axles.htm

1100lbs for a set. About. I have no idea how that compares to 60s, 44s, or 9"ers. What's a few hundred pounds here or there? :D

Thw whole purpose of Moogs, are the strength and the ability to have a lower center of gravity. For roughly the same money you can get 2 steering rockwells for the price of one moog axle. it is also easier to narrow a rockwell. Only major disadvantage to rocks is the lack of ground clearance, but that can be achieved by running some 44's :brows:

Anyway you are looking at it... back away slowly and give me your money and I wil show you how to build a Mog MJ, or one on rockwells for you

Yeah well that's sort of a misconception because I don't actually have any money.

If you're going to take the time/money to make MOGs works, at least build a better sunspension setup. I doubt it would be hard to 4-link a 'manche rear, or run a 1-link if you want it to be really easy.

To mount coils or 1/4 elliptical leaves, you'd probably have to cut a bunch of stuff. That's a good thing.
