what a cool club.

here's the low down:

i bought a cheap comanche and want it to simply haul @$$ around on the back roads. i race downhill mtb and wanna do the same stuff in my vehicle.

i need new front end stuff like track bar, front shocks, all 4 ball joints, brake rotors, coils, all rubber bushings, and stabilizer shock.

also i need new rear shocks, rear brakes, radiator and tires.

i plan on fixing this thing up quite a bit and i will take some pics once i make some progress.

what would be the best option for me right now, fix only the broken parts, or get some kind of suspension kit?

i want really good suspension over anything else.

reccomendations?

btw here is a link to a thread i started on the jeep forum. it has some more info on my case.http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=624713

Nothing much anyways...just about 4 seconds of fast driving (more like fishtailing the whole time) on a snow ridden road maybe 15-20 feet wide. With trees on both sides.

With that kind of driving I smell another Comanche in the junkyard soon.... Especially when it's not even repaired yet suspension wise...one thing goes on you suspension wise and boom right into those trees man. I hope you are atleast running some wider snow tires when you do those runs, not the ones I see in the pic.

Regardless, if you intend to continue with this then at least beef up the suspension and raise it slightly to compensate for the things you may not see buried undearth the snow

Welcome to the club...

If you want to start with a good suspension, you should look at Motion Offroad, Hell Creek Suspensions or Rubicon Express. Sounds to me like you are going to "need" a good one

You should start a thread in the Projects Forum on here.

well i guess i didn't update too well. i got lots of small stuff fixed and thought it was nunpurr untill a couple days ago it was minus 25 and when i started up 3 of my fuel injectors started leaking bad so i am wondering what to do about that. i know that the stock fuel injectors suck and catch fire. in the summer i'm going to get some toyo m55s or a similar tire along with new shocks, front coils, ball joints, and what ever steering components are worn. eventually i plan on getting a new rear axle with discs and deaver leafs and deaver front coils, and a snazzy dazzy set of shocks. switching in a newer ho engine and a newer tranny, driveshaft, and transfercase because I'm goin on 260000km. it will become a secondary vehicle so that i have something to give to my son.

in the mean time though i will probably pick up an 02 tacoma if all goes as planned for when I'm done highschool. :clapping:

and my previous cars have been no where as cool as this. i had a 95 sonoma with over 2million km!!! went through almost two of everything. mostly used for road trips around the continent. i had a 90 f150 larait xlt extended cab. it was big and bulky but still took flight. then i had an 89 bronco2 wich was super fun and loved hitting jumps and deer. then i got a 98 corola that my pops is driving because he is an old fart that doesn't need a truck anymore. now i have the manche.

wicked awesome. i'll have to get my mechanic to show me how to throw these in. right now i have a combo of stock, used from another manche, and a couple new ones in there. might as well get them all on the same program.

and i bought some white shoes. found out that my clutch has a slight leak. one drip per hour probably. thanks for you help guys!

so when i put my truck in gear while driving and hold down the clutch, there is a gradual grinding noise that builds up to a constant volume after about 3-5 seconds. it sounds like its comming right from my tranny. how many miles can you get out of the ax15 and the np231? wich is what i think i have.

I'm asking because i just found out my friend has a comanche sitting in his driveway since he moved in and he has never seen it move and he wants to sell it. his wifes father says that all it needs is a clutch so i might pick it up if it has low km.

I'm also curious why those fuel injectors are so cheap. i only need six right? my mechanic who's a good friend says that fuel injectors go for 120 each.

An AX-15 can last practically forever, but they are susceptible to synchro degradation from using the wrong gear oil. Current specs call for 10-W40 engine oil and not the old gear oil (which has compounds in it that eat away at the bronze bushings). Rebuilding one is supposedly pretty straightforward but I've never done one yet.

Step one is making sure the trans has enough oil in it. Check the t-case too. It takes ATF oil.

here's a quickie. whats the biggest tire i can go with before i start rubbing? i don't make my truck do any hardcore articulations. i just drive fast on the dirt roads. i was looking at tires and the sales man said i could get away with 32" and i didn't really believe him.

and you should not with no lift the biggest i would go is a 29"-31" tall tire but absoulty no bigger lift it 3-5" and you can run 33" tall tires but that dana 35 can't handle any bigger than that judgeing by the way you drive i would go with some 30" tall tires

bigger than stock and easy on the axle ( your hard enough on it)

the d35 is just plain weak :smart:

You could go 32's with at 3-4" lift. Stock it will be 235's or 30's max.

hey fellow mtb'er and Comanche enthusiast.... here is my shuttle rig: I've had it for almost 5 years and only decided to get serious about building it up in the last 12 months...

http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=14488893&albumId=2107755

I got rid of the renix cooling system first.... later the renix 4.0 and found a wrecked cherokee for the 4.0 HO, bought a 63mm bored tb and cold air kit off ebay, added a flowmaster muffler, re did the suspension w/a RE 4.5" kit, MOOG Ball joints, used Rancho RS9000 shocks w/the My Ride adjustable controller (was gonna order Fox threw a friend who works for my freeride LBS but didn't know that JKS makes shock adapters so you can run Fox on a Comanche/Cherokee)... If you have a friend who works at a LBS they most likely can pro deal you Fox for your truck, hell ya!; just need the JKS adapters)... later did the bushwackers after a friend sold them to me at cost

I've driven it back and forth to Whistler at least 20x, out to Port Angeles, down to Mt Hood... the pics are not exactly up to date... in about a month I will add more once I get more lighting on ARB bullbar... If I get a chance I will take a more current pic this w/e which shows the current wheelset and rino lining where the rocks spray...

Hoping to get to ride my bike again this weekend! Too much snow where the good riding is!

those jks race shok adapters are probably what i need. that way i can install some serious shocks like on my bicycles.

i decided that I'm broke.

i bought a new truck that maybey is more reliable for the time being.

what is the average cost of a tranny rebuild? and is this tranny one to be rebuilt? mine is deffinitely not doing so good. makes a grinding noise when not in gear, or when in gear and the clutch is pressed.

and i might gain a shop class at school where i'd be able to work on my trucks for free for an hour every day. :brows: and i want to put in my own fuel injectors. howcome a shop quotes me around 900$ cad. for this when the fuel injectors i was recomended on here are only 150ish for a set?

31"x10.50" tires will fit with minor plastic trim on stock rims and WJ LCA's (minor tire rub on spring tower when fully flexed and no other tire rub when turned)

31"X10.5'" tires with 15"X7" or 8" rims that have 4" of backspacing instead of the stock 5.5" backspacing would be good for you're goal. Extra trimming required (not difficult). No tire rub when fully flexed or turned)

32"x11.50" tires tires on 15x8" rims cut front fenders with flares raised to the bodyline. Thïs would look good and handle good. (More difficult, but worth the work).

33"x10.50"tire and 3.5" of lift on my old '95 XJ.

Flares raised to the body line (with stock rims)

Image Not Found

Tire stuffed (no tire rub even when steered lock to lock with 15"x7" rims with 4" of backspacing and 11.7" travel shocks with 5.5" of lift). It still cleared with 3.5"of lift, 9.5" travel shocks and 2" bumpstops.

Filled gap

Inner fender liner (Stock inner liner cut down and rewoked some heat gun)

My write-up on MadXJ

With the way the fenders are cut the 33" tires fit without any lift as long as the sway bar was hooked up.

I'm looking for two sets of rims here. one for my 87 ranger and one for my commanche i guess. i just need some with more (or less ?) back spacing so that i can clear a bit bigger tires. anyone know what kinda rims i could find at the junk yard that will fit this application? :dunno:

and i don't do any flexing or rock crawling stuff so i don't need to worry as much about clearance. i just wanna squeek by with clearance and keep my truck as low as possible with 30's and about 100lbs in the back at most times.

i wish i found out about trophy trucks and $#!& cuz i woulda spent a summer in mexico or something to learn about it first hand. you can only learn so much on the internet.

soo.. i finally got the o rings changed and no more leaking from my fuel injectors. i removed the wheels and bolted them onto my ranger because it really needed wheels.

i noticed that my drivers side coil rubs on the front quadrant of the wheel well. i will get a picture soon. the coil also looks bowed.

so i plan on new coils... but i was wondering what angle the bump stops should be at. how are they damaged?

these ones look perfect and strait. mine are cocked forward on an odd angle... il get a picture this weekend.

XJ3.jpg

and what is the minimum safe backspacing i would want to run with a set of 16"s?
