The vacuum motor on my CAD passed all the FSM functional checks (held vacuum, smooth motion, etc) and it was still bad! The lack of 4WD had me baffled until I decide to conclusively eliminate that as a problem and pinned the shift fork in place. Apparently the vacuum motor functioned but was not strong enough to slide/hold the collar in place.

Cup Holder for XJ/MJ console
1987Comanche replied to 1987Comanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks for the input. I'm keeping the MJ floor mount e-brake so I don't have to worry about having a handle in the way. I'll put my console in and perhaps troll the U-Pull-it looking for a cup holder to put in the storage slot instead. If I don't find anything good the generic one from Advance seems like a good idea. Hard to believe the cup holder was such an obvious afterthought in these trucks... -
I did some searching here and at NAXJA and only came across 2 options for the XJ/MJ center console. Of the 2 the consensus seems to to be that the cup holder over the E-brake slot is better: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jeep-Cherokee-New-XJ-Cup-Holder-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem3cb26d3f7bQQitemZ260691541883QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_685wt_1165 I've also read that some folks have issues with this cup holder not holding drinks that well. Is this my best option for the factory console??

Cool. I hope no one busted up the window and it works out for you. Can you do me a favor? If you have the time can you pull (or at least expose) the carpet covering the rear of the cab and PM some pics of all the attachment points, fasteners, and holes? I didn't have time to do it and am trying to figure out how to put a carpet in.
-
Good info on the metal tabs that hold the carpet on. Unfortunately the truck will be crushed long before I make it back to Columbia. We were there for a quick trip and I had a very limited amount of time to run around the jy. I'll either have to find something closer to home or see if I can make or pick up the tabs. There's a good and bad side to a find like that. Good side is I grabbed the MJ sending unit...bad side is I regret not having enough time to thoroughly pick that truck over...

When I was at the pull a part today I found an MJ with the carpeted panel on the back of the cab. I didn't have a lot of time to play with the truck (very tight schedule the weekend before Xmas) and, since it was the wrong color, I didn't mess with it. It did lead me to wonder exactly how the panel was attached and perhaps if I could cut one down from a full size Chevy, etc to fit. Does anyone have pics of the OE carpeted panel on the rear of the cab and/or can explain how it attaches?

It did have the rear slider...not sure about the clip as I didn't specifically look for it. Overall the truck was surprisingly complete. It was originally black but had a nasty white paint job (brush or roller?) at some point. Body looked ok, D35 rear, load sensing height valve & rod were there, pass taillight looked ok, SWB bed looked decent. The place is actually called Pull-A-Part. Located on 5702 Monticello road and there's a billboard for it right near the exit.

Just so y'all know there is a 1987 4.0 2WD MJ at Pull-A-Part in Columbia, SC with a console and buckets!!!! As luck (and Murphy's law) would have it I found this 2 weeks after I finished my bucket seat conversion. I found a Comanche with a bench and modified the brackets for my bucket seat conversion...it would have been much easier with the correct brackets. The seats are tan and are in ok but not great shape. You can, however, replace the seat cushion(s) with 4 dr XJ ones fairly easily. My score from this truck was the 4.0 MJ specific sending unit and fuel pump. I now have a spare :clapping: Hope this helps somebody out!

Can intermittent wipers be added?
1987Comanche replied to 91coMANche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yes, that's a standard GM stalk. Pretty much any '80s GM car will work as a donor. The stalk just pulls out of the switch and then you have to disassemble the column to remove the switch. It's probably as much work to replace the switch as it is to swap the column...just depends on what you have available. -

You also have to tear the column down and replace the multifunction switch. In the case of my '87 someone had replaced the switch with a GM delay and cruise unit but never put the timer module (black box) under the dash. They got 90% of the way there and never finished it :dunno: -
The TPS on my '90 4.0 is on it's way out again. According to the forum searches I've done the A/T TPS can be used in place of the M/T TPS if you simply leave the 4 pin square plug disconnected. I consulted the FSM and it calls out TPS adjustment as 4.15V closed throttle for auto vs 0.85V closed throttle for M/T. If the sensors will swap wouldn't the auto TPS need to put out 0.85V closed throttle? Anyone played with both sensors?? Also as an FYI I plugged in my spare 2.5 M/T TPS and probed it with key on engine off. It looks identical and closed voltage is pretty close but WOT is only 3.14V vs close to 5V for the 4.0

Whose cherry MJ was this at LKQ Greenville on 11/26??
1987Comanche replied to 1987Comanche's topic in The Pub
Maybe someone can Photoshop/clear up my cell phone photo and read the windshield banner. I was going to write it down but figured that I'd just be able to read it from my camera phone pic instead. Joke's on me I suppose  I didn't have a chance to dig out a CC card. Rain was on the way and I was trying to get the Grand Am GT seats home before they got wet...which I did successfully btw. -
I'm assuming whoever owns this MJ has to be on CC. LKQ Self serve in Greenville, SC had 50% off day and I saw it in the lot on the way out (2 PM or so). I parked the '90 next to it and snapped a cell phone pic. Anyone know who it is?

:jump: Thanks. Any suggestions on a center console? Now that I've been driving her for a few days the lack of console is starting to become annoying. Obviously there's the 1st or 2nd gen Cherokee but I was wondering if anyone has done something else. I was thinking that I could leave the bench spec trim plate for the shifter/xfer case lever in place and butt a console up to it. Suggestions?

What mirrors are you running
1987Comanche replied to 91coMANche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I found old style (84-96) mirrors that are one piece instead of spring loaded. They don't vibrate at speed and work quite nicely :) -
You can replace lifters in the 2.5 without pulling the head :). Don't know why they didn't make provisions for that on the 4.0 but oh well.

Very true. Those door panels came off my '87 and they, in turn, came from the jy when I picked up a door for it. My '90 was factory radio delete so it came with the plain vinyl door panels with no speaker grilles. The burgundy Laredo door panels were an improvement but I am still on the hunt for a set of nice gray ones. The jy is all about luck and timing and, so far, I haven't managed to find a door panel donor.

I've been keeping an eye out for a set of Cherokee/Comanche 2 dr bucket seats for my truck but haven't had any luck finding them. LKQ self serve had 50% off day and, while walking around, I came across a 2002 Grand Am GT 2 dr with leather seats. It took me quite a while to put them in but I think it was worth the effort. I included a pic of the bracket and adapter assembly b/c that was the hardest thing to figure out. The trans hump in our floors is so large that I had to move the Grand Am seats up in order to close the doors. They sit 1.5" higher than the OE bench I removed. If you look at the adapter bracket pic you'll see a Comanche base (bench) with a 2nd track added (benches have 1 adjuster track, buckets have 2), the C channel spacer scrounged from the Grand Am seat base, the steel adapter plates bolted to the Grand Am seats, and assorted nuts & washers used as spacers. The new seats are light years ahead of the old bench

What other seatbelt receivers (floor mount side) fit our buckles? I know the belts are Bendix and they look just like GM belts of the era. I scored a set of Grand Am GT buckets that I want to install and I don't think the bench seat buckles are going to work with them.
