  1. Let me think....if I remember right, you divide the small number on the ring gear into the larger one (it'll read something like 3.549637blahblahblah. Basically 3.55)
  2. Man the YJ guys are gonna HATE you! The '78-79 Ford D60 fronts are a direct bolt-in on the front of a YJ. The perches are the in the right place. Your find is pure gold to those guys. Especially for that price. Just put a pair of '78 Ford D60's under my bud's 93 YJ. He picked'em up for $800.
  3. Now there's an idea!
  4. Aw come on, it's SO much more fun to get all dirty removing a leaking dif cover & reading the numbers on the ring gear. Believe that & I'll tell you another one :D
  5. Well I really wanted to get rid of the stock airbox. Only had the truck a few months & have already had to remove the stupid thing 3 times for various repairs. It just seems to be in the way of EVERYTHING
  6. I was going to mention those, but I don't think they were made by jeep. I may be wrong(and probably am) but I thought these were a version of the Ford GPW. I know they didn't last long since the swinging-arm suspension(just like some dune buggies use) was prone to folding under during hard cornering & sending the vehicle into a violent rollover. Apparently killed quite a few GI's before they mothballed it. Either way, Jeep should LEARN from this 8)
  7. No pics(no digital camera) I'm just gonna tighten the new u-bolts down & keep a close eye on'em for a while. Should be fine. Probably won't even use a torque wrench, since it won't be accurate against the warped surface. BTW, 40# don't seem like much. I figured at least 90.
  8. Too late for that now. I thought about it, but for 30 bucks it didn't seem too bad.
  9. I hafta admit I don't like flames unless they're on a Harley, but if it works for you, go for it. The wheel & tire combo looks nice. The lift is definitely on the tall side, but yet it looks so right :D
  10. Swapped out the rear spring packs today. Passenger side bracket(not sure what it's called, but the shock is bolted to it) was VERY overtorqued in a past life. It was bent up around the leafs & the old u-bolts were badly bent....to the point I can't believe they didn't fail. I quickly set out in search of a replacement. I checked with all the other MJ owners in my area(that would be 2) & both trucks had the same condition. I assume this was a case of using too thin material from the factory? Are they all bent like this? And while we're on the subject, what do y'all torque the u-bolts down to?
  11. Well I ordered the Rusty's intake today, along with the K&N filter. I haven't seen it yet but I know it has nipples for the large air tubes. What about the small airlines that go into the back of the OEM airbox? I know at least one of these runs into something that looks important. V  V
  12. I noticed in one of my offroad mags they did an axle comparison & stated the 8.8 only had a marginal strength increase over the D35 & wasn't worth the time or money to do the swap. Uh...ok. The ONLY reason they gave was it was a c-clip design. I don't get this because I've never seen a c-clip fail. I've seen shafts break, R&P's grenade, spiders explode, housings crack, you name it, but never had a c-clip or the lip holding it on the axle fail.
  13. Is that a BTF cover? I got one on my 8.8 & it was worth the bucks. The only thing I don't like is the small-headed specialty bolts they use. Can't find these puppies in a hardware store. I also found out I don't have a 5/16" 12 point socket. Took forever to run all those bolts out with a wrench.
  14. I've had bad luck with Rusty's as well, & I can't stand that you can't get your money back on returns. Just store credit. BUT I'm currently installing this very lift on my '89 longbed  I was looking for a cheaper kit that was mostly complete(shocks, adj trackbar, etc) & I wanted new leaf springs. My MJ is a 2wd & I won't be offroad so I didn't want to spend a pile. I only have it partially installed(working on it when I have time & am in the mood) but I can tell you this much. 1)The LCA's are very beefy but don't expect much flex. 2)There are no bumpstop extensions. There should be. 3)The kit provides lowering brackets for the brake lines. This is shoddy IMO. I'm getting new longer brake lines. Haven't tackled the rear yet so I can't comment on that. I plan on running 32x11.50's. They better fit because they are leaning against the shop wall waiting to be bolted up
  15. Found what I needed. Thanks!
  16. Putting a 4.5" lift on my '89. I got ahead of myself & pulled the end links off the swaybar before remembering the kit has drop brackets to lower the whole assembly. This turned out to be a good mistake since the links are rusted about halfway through where they bolt to the swaybar. I would rather leave the bar mounted where it is & get some longer endlinks. I don't need disco's since it is 2wd & won't go offroad. Anybody make what I want or do I have to use the drop brackets?
  17. A few of us from here in southwestern Illinois are headed to Redbird State Park in Indiana for Labor Day weekend. About a 4.5 hr drive. Makes a nice roadtrip. Always have fun there. Mostly woods trails, VERY hilly with several deep mudholes thrown in, plus a nice town 4 miles away with hotels, resteraunts, etc. www.redbirdsra.com
  18. I think the price is right from Rusty's, although the filter will be twice as much as the tube
  19. That is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. I saw them on Rusty's website for TJ's. Never thought to look there for the MJ
  20. The airbox on my '89 4.0 has distorted from age or heat, or both. It has opened up so it's wider through the middle which is letting the filter drop down & surely not filter the air properly. Quick fix I can do is drill a hole on each side & run a length of 1/4" threaded rod through with a nut on each side to pull it together. What I'm wondering is if it's possible to do away with the airbox & rig up a conical gauze filter. Looking at all the air tubes running into it I'm guessing not.
  21. I just tried to convert my '89 to 134 & we found a leaking Schrader valve. Thought it would be no big deal except we could not find a replacement. Apparently they have been discontinued & the only solution other than a junkyard replacement(which may also leak) is a new aftermarket compressor. :headpop: Good thing winter is right around the corner.
  22. Some people should not be allowed to breed.
  23. I also have a 4 banger TJ. Running 4.88's with 36" Swamper SX's. Hasn't seen 5th gear in years
  24. I went for a cruise tonite & noticed it is pretty doggy taking off with the 3.55's & "215's". I'm leaning more toward 4.56's now since I will mostly drive short trips & would like the added acceleration. It's not going to be a daily driver. More like a "whenever I feel like it" driver, so I ain't TOO worried about mileage.
  25. Was riding with my dad when I was about 12 years old. He had an old '77 chevy 3/4 ton truck with the usual rust & rattles. We're sitting at a stoplight & up pulls this Camaro. Same story. Revving & jumping at the light. I don't know if they wanted to race or were just being ignorant. Anyway, light goes green & they do a nice burnout. To my suprise dad stomps on it & blows their doors off to the next light. Guess they didn't figure that old truck had a "warmed up" 454 under the hood :brows: Oh. Did I forget to mention we were on the way home from Sears with a brand new washing machine in the bed of the truck? How humiliating would it be to not only get beat, but beat by an old truck carrying a washing machine. hehe
