  1. I suppose you're right, it is overkill. But if there was a reason, better to include it now than regret it later. I was just thinking that there might be a time when I would want to maneuver a trailer. We were doing that a lot at this year's Baja500, and the front mount receiver really came in handy.
  2. Thanks to you all for the great comments. Gives me a lot of things to consider, and I'm in no desperate hurry, so I have a chance to do it right. For those who have gotten winch mount bumpers, do you think that adding a 2" receiver as well would be overkill?
  3. Darn! I was hoping that this thread title referred to the seat "tilt" problem that I have: The outer edge of my driver's seat near the door tilts down toward the floor, about three inches lower than it should be. I assume it's because the inner frame has broken (as I had a similar problem in one of the Recaros in my Tii, and we had to re-weld it when we took the seat apart for reupholstery). Problem is, I don't think that the MJ bucket seats are worth that much effort. So I guess I just find another seat, or replace both with some aftermarket seats.
  4. Glad to hear you're okay. Scary stuff! Friends down here are still dealing with the effects of the Cedars Fire; almost four years now.
  5. How do you like them? Have you compared the JCR bumper to the Nate's? Look's like for a comparable design front bumper, JCR is about 2X the cost of Nate's.
  6. Thanks for the input. I liked the looks of the RigidCO, but it's a fair bit pricier than Nate's, and I want to have a radiator guard/light bar, which is included in Nate's and doesn't appear available on the RigidCO. Nate's apparently responded to some concerns about the strength of their mounting system, and include the extended mount with the Recessed Winch bumper.
  7. Okay, the XJ aftermarket bumper I thought I had didn't pan out, so I'm back in the hunt. One option I'm considering is the Nate's 4x4 XJ Recessed Winch Bumper, shown here: http://www.nates4x4.com/catalog/popup_image.php?pID=68 (1984-96 version slightly different than image shown) with a 2" receiver and light tabs. I'll add a winch later on. Anyone have any experience with Nate's? Does it tie into the frame enough to use for recovery? The price seems good, but that never comes without a cost in my experience. Any other options to consider? I don't want to go higher than $500 unless I'm convinced it's necessary. I've looked at the ARB and the RigidCo, but not any others. Anyone on the list ever try fabbing a few bumpers to amortize the costs?
  8. Thanks Jeff and all. I just heard back that it's from a 96, so all should be good. And just to clarify, it's an aftermarket brush guard bumper, so the stock bumper configuration wouldn't have been an issue, but it's nice to know that the brackets are readily adaptable. I was afraid that it might be a different framerail configuration. Jim
  9. Thanks. I should have mentioned that it's a front. So that means that post 96 XJs are different? If so, anyone know whether they can be made to fit?
  10. I'm considering getting a bumper off of an XJ (don't know the year yet, hopefully later tonight) and fitting it to my 87 MJ? Any year range issues or problems I should be aware of? Don't mind a bit of fettling, but if certain XJ years are out of the question, I'd like to know. Thanks
  11. And it wouldn't hurt to throw the stud into the freezer for a couple of hours, and perhaps heat up the backing plate a bit. The interference fit clearance is not huge, so even small temperature differences can do the trick. An old trick from years of working on Brit Iron.
  12. Maybe I'm underestimating, but with that short wheelbase, I don't see how he can get hooked over the top edge of that rock and climb the rest of the way up? Without a winch, wouldn't he need a CG way forward, almost in front of and below the rig?
  13. I'll add a hearty +1 to this. I had all kinds of gremlins on my 2002Tii and the block-to-frame strap seemed to check out just fine, but we fabbed an extra ground strap anyway and all was good.
  14. I'm glad to hear that someone else feels this way! I specifically sought out a rig with the RENIX system, as when the fit hits the shan down in Baja, I want at least a fighting chance to be able to figure out what's wrong, and to cobble together a shade tree solution. Now if I could only find any shade trees down in Baja, I'd be a happy man! :D BTW are there any guides on how to do a stroker? I'm thinking of picking up a spare motor and doing the build up, while my 300K motor dies a slow death.
  15. This was one symptom of a gremlin that about drove me nucking futz. It turned out that the PO had crammed a single element bulb into the 2 element (1157) socket in the rear. The single contact would sometimes short the running light circuit to the turn / brake / hazard circuit, and, sometimes not. :headpop: WOW! Thanks for the tip. That never would have occurred to me. I'll check it out.
  16. When I turn on the headlights, my right turn indicator goes on. But the indicator also works just fine when I use the turn signal. I haven't tried both simultaneously; it'll probably cause the radio to go on. :D
  17. Some companies are pretty protective of their copyrights in the FSM. Not sure about Jeep, but I've never seen one on-line, and I know that NAXJA has a strict "No FSM" post policy.
  18. Ordinarily such a contract should have performance clauses specifying bonus for early completion/penalty for late performance (carrot/stick). If you simply signed the agreement the contractor provided, good luck. Does the agreement at least provide that time is of the essence? Did you check with a lawyer before you signed it?
  19. Why get mad? If the switch works, and the fuse is good, then it's gotta be a simple wiring problem (probably from the hot side). Look at a wiring diagram, and think about where the commonality is if all the panel lights are dead, then the answer should be clear.
  20. Old enough to know better. :D
  21. I thought so, but remember reading somewhere that it was 1984. Just checked, and you're right.
  22. A friend has one of that era, and it's been a money pit. YMMV but parts and maintenance can be a killer.
  23. And now an on topic post, since I seem to have hi-jacked my own thread :D Is the major difference between the 1987 Comanche and the 1984-86 models simply the availability of the 4.0L six? I'm looking around for info, but no luck so far.
  24. It is, and thanks. I just tried the lug wrench, and it worked perfectly. The end of the folding handle didn't look right, but I'll give it a try as well. PS I found it useful to remove the tailgate (as the license plate frame sticks up a bit, and the rear bumper is fubared, so my clearance was tight for the lug wrench). Is this normal?
