  1. I recommend a hydraulic shock like the Doestch Tech 3000 or Rusty's Hydro's, smooth riding. RS5000's, ES3000's, and such are gas-charged and stiff riding in nature.
  2. The 8.25 is worthwhile if it's free (mine was), otherwise buy an 8.8. I just got done swapping one into my MJ, well, almost done. Most popular gear ratios are 3.55, 3,73, and 4.10 and can be found with a limited slip. Picked mine up complete for $100.
  3. I've got a '91 lwb I could probably cut what you need from.
  4. How'd you prep the chrome for paint? I need to do the same thing to a set of wheels. Anybody else have recommendations?
  5. I'll know soon, need to drop the shortbed tank to do some work. Stumpy found a square hole in the shortbed frame further back closer to the axle, same type hole the mounting brackets use. It may be useful in mounting the larger tank if it even clears the axle.
  6. Somebody here mentioned painting with the Chemical Agent Retarding (CARC) paint the military uses, can't find the thread. Don't do it. This stuff can kill you if inhaled. It's a very cool dull look with a little bit of texture, but dangerous stuff to spray. Find something that looks similar, probably be cheaper too.
  7. That's a lot of POR15, and it's expensive  You can run a D30 up front, but consider upgrading to 297x shafts found on '95+ jeeps.
  8. Tell them I said you're right And this is coming from a YJ & MJ owner.
  9. Ahh, never knew that about ZJ's, always learning something new.
  10. On what? The bolts on his D30 look like all late-model D30's I've seen, but it has the early bolt-on caliper bracket instead of the later 1-piece knuckle/bracket.
  11. ZJ D30 is a high pinion, same as most all but the newest XJ's. Many had CV axleshafts, easily replaceable with the ujoint axleshafts. It'll bolt right in. I've got a similar question, I just picked up a HP D30 non-disco with 4.10 and CV axlshafts, anybody know what it could have been out of? My quess would be something with a 4banger, but I thought no ZJ would have a 4banger. Maybe a 2.5L XJ with the 242?
  12. Cool, I get by there all the time on my way up to Springfield and back.
  13. Something like this, as long as it didn't stick out too far from the body. Which area of STL are you in? I'm on the IL side of the river.
  14. Not spendy here either, got a total of $200 into the D30 and 8.8 w/4.10 that'll be going in the MJ this week.
  15. I've seen a ton of those axles in the yards, passed them over looking for my D44. Didn't know they may have 4.56 factory. Is there any aftermarket support like gearsets and diffs for them? I know some 'Zu stuff is pretty oddball with little aftermarket support. Keep us updated on the project. I've already collected two sets of rims for the switch to 6-lug.
  16. I'd buy some MJ rocker skids if the price was right. Cool that you're in the STL area too.
  17. That's no scam, a shipment is assigned a tracking number once a manifest is created by a shipper and/or received by UPS. Doesn't matter if it's shipped yet or not. USPS does the same thing, once a user prints an e-shipping label, they get a tracking number. Doesn't mean a thing as far as shipping.
  18. Similar to my current plan for my YJ, I've already got the axles but my rear is an Isuzu D44. Why'd you choose that 'Zu rear axle? Why the ford knuckles in the front? I've already got my DS flattop from a Chevy, and the PS is a flattop from a '73-'75 Waggy that'll need milled, drilled, and tapped for the highsteer arm. I'll be stuffing in 5.38 with spools, or a combination of spool/mini-spool/lincoln locker to be determined. My Waggy front axle is a disconnect, so I can disconnect the DS axleshaft with an aircraft cable from the cab. Add lockouts on top of that and it'll be have well onroad. Narrowing a ford axle seems like a lot of trouble for HP, do you need the extra pinion height or strength?
  19. What changed? I've had the 231's apart on most all years and there's no mechanical difference I can think of that would cause this.
  20. I thought all MJ autos were floor shift, my '88 is. I've only seen the column shift in police package XJ's.
  21. Nothing wrong with that axle setup, it should serve you fine for how your truck is setup. I've gotta swap axles in the next few days, 3.55 to 4.10, disco to non-disco 30, and 8.25 to 8.8.
  22.
  23. The original post is about an XJ. It's my understanding that the 44 was offered later in the MJ than it was the XJ.
  24. I'm SOA with 4wd spring packs in the rear and it sits slightly tail high with 5.5" coils. Sits level with a slight load in the bed like an axle.
  25. I remember reading '89 was the last year for the 44 in an XJ, but not sure. Let us know what you find.
