What cage to use as a start
hackedmj replied to pingpong's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Might not be alot of difference to just have a custom cage put in if you figure the price of the partial kit, plus shipping, plus labor to install and finish what's not in the kit, just a thought. -
jeep has a lost of power after i shut it down.
hackedmj replied to bogginboy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Battery or a bad cable connection. -
Here's my jewel in the rough!. I had a piece of junk van I wanted out of the yard , priced it for $400, a guy ask if I'd trade it for a Jeep truck, nuff said. It's rust free, original paint, 4.0 auto, 4x4, shortbox, buckets, floor shift. Bad news is it's a mechanical toilet! I've started building it up.It'll be tubed and bedless. Going with a SOA 8.8, swapping in a non disco D30 with about 5.5 lift in the front and a 3 link. Going to try to stay light .....and cheap lol. I post some more current pics soon. http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5d725b3127cce938df419aec100000016109AYuXLdy2ao

63 inch Chevy leafs on an MJ
hackedmj replied to hackedmj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm refering to the late model 1/2 ton chevys, the 4x4s have an extra leaf, both are 63" eye to eye with a "dead center" center pin. -
Might have been the hub hole being too small on the 210 wheel for a Jeep hub. 84-02 XJ 5 on 4.5 in. 1/2 97-04 TJ 5 on 4.5 in. 1/2 87-96 YJ 5 on 4.5 in. 1/2 02-04 LIBERTY 5 on 4.5 in. 1/2 92-98 ZJ GRAND CHEROKEE 5 on 4.5 in. 1/2 99-04 WJ GRAND CHEROKEE 5 on 5 in. 1/2 46-86 ALL CJ'S 5 on 5.5 in. 1/2 74-83 J-10 SERIES 6 on 5.5 in. 7/16 ALL J-20 SERIES 8 on 6.5 in. 9/16 74-83 F/S CHEROKEE 6 on 5.5 in. 7/16

Front end wobble above 40 mph
hackedmj replied to red_eyed_rider's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Usely alignment, out of balance tires, worn parts or a combination of these things. Most of the death wobble I've experienced has been worn track bar related. -
anyone here run SOA and 31's?
hackedmj replied to mjeff87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
On my first MJ, I ran 31s with a longer heavy duty shackle in the rear, got about an 1 out of it, and 2 inch spacer in the front , worked out great. -
63 inch Chevy leafs on an MJ
hackedmj replied to hackedmj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Not sure that the Yota springs are actually bad , but they're shorter and sprung over making it hard to get lift from them. On my last wheeling trip I met three Yota trucks (they were not wheeling together) and all three had the chevy's and all had nothing but good to say about them. I think what makes them work well, they're noticably thicker than most springs which would help wrap and they're long which would make up for the thickness so they still flex well. -

I think you may be right, sometimes getting too much information from reading old forum posts makes you lose direction. I was always impressed with my old Comache's rear suspension compared to my XJ rear, but it was never locked up and wheeled as hard as plan to wheel this one. I think I'll just finish up the axle swap, I've got plenty of other areas that needs work. Probably use the track bar stuff on my XJ, it needs it bad. The Yota guys use the chevy's for better flex and less wrap and cheap lift from what I gather, that why I was thinking about them. -
Good looking truck! I've always liked white MJs. Yea, sell the Mustang and sink it in the truck :-D

Any body done this or heard of it. I working on an 8.8 SOA on my MJ. I know axle wrap can be a problem with SOAs. I started fabbing up some brackets for a traction bar but have concerns about too much antisquat caused by the traction bar, especially since I'm not running a bed making the rear light. I know alot of the Yota guys like the chevy leafs, just wondering if they will offer less wrap? It looks the be an easy swap from my measurements. Looks like I can just basically move the front spring mounts foward , allow the axle to move foward 1 inch, the distance my driveshaft is short from the axle swap. It looks like by doing this rear spring mount will be perfect where it is. Anybody have any thought on this?

Only issue is that the avaliabilty of shafts with 297X ujoints is somewhere between zilch and really poor. I hope I can track down a set for a decent price - gotta hit up the pick'n'pull to see if they even have a newer cherokee/tj. Would a ZJ shaft work? Grand axles will work as long as they're not the cv joint type. Look for older model XJs with ABS, they also have 297s.

I agree with the guys above, stay with your plan, forget about 37 unless you got big money to spent, A well built rig on 33s is better than a cobbled rig on 37s. I'm building my mj with an 8.8 and a Dana 30 front on 35s, Just got the 8.8 under it tonight. If my D30 breaks an axle, I could really care less, you can change a 30 axle shaft in about 15 minutes with a jack, lug wrench and a 13 millimeter wrench, I don't know why is scares people so much. You'll break more axles with a D44 and 37s than a D30 with 33s. I've run the hard trails at Tellico 40- 50 trips with a 30 front on 33s and never broke an axle. Now get back to work :-D

Vise Grips and a claw hammer!

In the last year I've started buying good used tires when I find them. It's a bad feeling to have a new expensive tire and cut the whole side out on a rock. That and the fact that gas companies have all my money lol.

Wow! 6 MJs, no wonder they're rare, you've been hoarding them up lol. Welcome.

Looking for opinions on these mirrors
hackedmj replied to Pete M's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I've got TJ mirrors on my XJ and will be putting a set on my MJ. They work excellent , when on the trail the mirror and arm will fold back and fit tightly over the vent glass out of the way and rear vision is great. They're also very good quality. -
Anybody build a flatbed?
hackedmj replied to DirtyComanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm also doing a flatbed, here's one I going to try to copy, it has some clean lines. Sorry about the Toyota post. I think the squared tubing would suit a Comanche nicely. http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5d736b3127cce944f14153e1800000016109AYuXLdy2ao -
New guy here. Thought I'd sign up and say hi. Got started out messing with Cherokees after having a Comanche, couldn't stop missing the MJ so I bought another fixer upper. It's solid but a mechanical nightmare, so I may need some advise as I go.
