  1. Swap is done. Here are a few lessons learned. Mopar has discontinued the external slave, so we are left with after market suppliers. MOST IMPORTANT: make sure you have a bleeder fitting for external slave cylinder. My slave did not come with one. Caused a huge last minute issue. Only one slave on Rock Auto included bleeder. My NAPA slave didn't. Heck of a problem at 4:45 p.m. Resorted to 35 minute trip to Jeep salvage yard in rush hour. Yardclosed at 5, but stuck around for us. Finally, a quarter mile away from yard. Police and fire department have street closed because of a vehicle fire. Delayed while we take back roads. Yard owner hung around for us after 3 or 4 phone calls. So big thank you to Hard Rock Jeep. Next, you need to buy 2 M8 x 25 mm bolts to mount external slave. After we picked up the used external slave, Matt checked out New slave against used slave. New slave had not had finish bore operation so fluid could bleed out from bleeder. Slave was made in Mexico. We drilled out the missing hole, installed used bleeder screw. In very short order, all was well. Quick road test show's a properly acting clutch. And properly acting transmission. More testing remain to be done. But took 3+ hours chasing minor parts and 3 hours for the actual swap. It was amazing to watch Whitbread work. He did the engine conversion, so if intimately familiar with what needs to be done. All I did was move the hydraulic jack as directed, hold some wrenches, chase wrenches, parts, etc. More on my TDI conversion thread later. Purpose here is to fill out parts issues on internal to external slave. This is the 3rd new slave put in the conversion. 2 internal slaves and the external slave. All have had problems. Just a fact to consider.
  2. Who will still be around on Sunday? Earliest I can make it is late Saturday night. Had planned to drive cross country, but simply too much to take care of at home. So flying to Pittsburgh for a week and renting a car. Thinking about driving to York Saturday night, take in the show, then back to Pittsburgh around noon Sunday. What do you guys think?
  3. This tach matches an early 1987 tach I have. Both front and back pics are identical. The large sweep and fonnt seems to match the 120 mph police calibrated speedometer on the H.O Cherokee. Long term project has been to "fit" this tach and 120 mph speedometer into a full guage cluster.
  4. Warren, Let us know what happens. This question comes up fr time to time. But fewer answers than questions.
  5. Down to mid 90's Yesterday and today. Actually did a little work outside on Saturday. Not much, but way better than Friday. Still, low temps are 72+. And humidity is up with tropical moisture. Even Mt. Palomar, at 6100+ feet is low 90's today. Time to go to the beach, except no parking spots at all
  6. Check the parts manual. Suspect there is a work around. My experience comes from a Renault diesel to TDI, so could be different. But worth some research on your part.
  7. Good to know, thanks. Ordered slave and throwout from NAPA this a.m. Picking it up this afternoon. Throwout was $90, external slave was about $64. Hopefully, decent quality.
  8. Picked up genuine Mopar clutch swivel, clutch fork spring and ordered new front bearing seal from local Jeep dealer. Mopar clutch throwout bearing is $148. Yeaks?? $36 from Crown, which is oem supplier I will see what NAPA wants for clutch throwout and slave cylinder. Spent $76 for the 3 Mopar parts.
  9. Don has posted this info before. Think he has run before and after Dyno runs for each/most of his mods. Good, solid info on the same Dyno for years.
  10. High temperatures in San Diego County Friday, July 6 Ramona, Ca 117 F El Cajon, Ca 112 F Where I live. A/C kept house at 77 F, but garage is not climate controlled, so into mid 90's before noon. Lots of smoke at noon from the fire in Alpine. Escondido, Ca 112 F ComancheSS lives here. Alpine, Ca 109 F plus a 600 acre brush fire. Very bad news for the firefighters. Closed Interstate 8 for a short time. 5% contained this morning.
  11. Don, Something is wrong around town. My 91 with auto gets about 15 mpg under round town confitions. Maybe 14+. Certainly not 10 or 11. Gas leak?
  12. Gridle was added in 1996/97 as part of noise, harshness, vibration engine upgrade.
  13. Recall a 500+ year old table at Hearst's Castle that had nothing but bees wax used on it ever. Abosolutely gorgeous!!
  14. Was thinking, try the a/c with the Honda. If it works, go with the Honda. Loved my little Honda generator. But the 2kw version would have been better.
  15. Should have asked what it takes to start your camping a/c unit. Starting takes more juce than running the a/c. Can your Coleman start the A/C? Had a 1000 watt Honda for years. Wonderful, quiet generator. But for an RV a/c, 2 of the Honda eu 2000's were required.
  16. Suspect the Honda will not start your a/c. Otherwise a great generator.
  17. What year was your truck and any issue with connection of master to clutch pedal?
  18. For what it's worth I have read about the 4 degree different cam timing before to explain different peak torque rpm on Renex vs HO
  19. Exactly why I am doing this conversion.
  20. I was at Fastnel. Their price was for the # 3 size. Other wise exactly the same. eBay works well if you are careful and have time.

  22. Looks like I will be able to reuse my master cylinder with just a different fitting on the end of the line. Also my pilot bearing should be good to go. It was semi custom for the engine conversion. Matt Whitbread is going to be in town to pick up another project truck, so we will do the slave swap when he gets here. I am going on a road trip east, so will follow him when he drives the project home.
  23. The fault lies with us, The Comsumer, who keeps looking for lower prices. WalMart mentality. So we get WalMart quality parts. Or Harbor Freight Tools. And I just purchased a $20 Harbor Freight step drill because I was too cheap to spend $58 for a quality Milwaukee step drill. So I am also part of the problem. My rational is the I will only drill 2 holes with the tool. Then, I will lose the tool anyway.
  24. Thank You for this list. I have the bell housing and the clutch release pivot: Have the Front Bearing retainer, clutch throwout lever fork,. Clutch throwout bearing needs to be replaced with new. That leaves me to order: 1) New throwout bearing. 2) Clutch fork spring. 3) External Slave Cylinder. 4) New master Cylinder kit. 5) Pilot bearing. 6) New rubber seal for front bearing retainer. Are we missing anything else? Thanks to all for the feedback.
