What Breaks In A Boosted 4.0L?
johnj92131 replied to 89Patches's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Extra cost for a stroker should be near zero. Crank is stock from an AMC/Jeep 258 engine. You will likely buy forged pistons anyway. Might have to machine the crank nose - but you are a machinist, so no cost. If you want 500 hp - just turn up the boost!! Seriously, towing 5000 lbs with a Comanche is one thing - Stopping the Comanche/trailer is WAY more important. But YOU know this - not sure about others who may read this in 6 months. I have thought about building a stroker. Depends on the cost difference. I have built plenty of engines from all sorts of cars as I am a machinist, But have never done a 4L so I really don't know about availability of parts. And if I were going to build a forged engine I would probably want 500hp  As I am a very power hungry person So keeping It Somewhat stock will limit me and save money for other modifications that I want to do in other area of the truck, So I can have a better overall truck not just a POS with a 5k engine. -

Aa long as you are in the block you should think hard about a stroker. Virtually no xtra cost for you and more low end for towing. I am sure you will have a weight distribuitng hitch and at least a D44 for wider drum brakes. -
What Breaks In A Boosted 4.0L?

400 lb/ft at what rpm? Turbos need to be relatively small to produce good low end performance that you want for towing. Guessing you might want 15 lbs of boost at 1800 rpms to double stock torque and a stock cam for towing performance. My gut tells me that the transmission will be the weak point out side the engine. My gut also tells me that stock pistions are not up to the kind of boost it will take for 400 lb/ft at the lower end. You are going to need to lower the compression (bigger dish in forged pistions?). -
. I read a little about that engine, just enough to salivate... . The horsepower is really attractive, though overkill at something like 240 HP. The torque is downright scary though - over 500 lb-feet, right? Enough to twist a little Comanche into a pretzel! No torque is only 420 lb/ft. Another Diesel that might be worth a look is the 1984-86 BMW 524TD also found in 1985 Lincolns. Can sometimes be found cheap. Come with 4 speed auto trans. Good thing about this engine is it was updated over the years in Europe for much more power and larger displacement. Search on Ebay.uk This BMW is also under 500 lbs if I remember correctly. Several years ago I was very interested in the 524TD as a very interesting BMW

Do not throw away that colum shifter instrument cluster.- Check out the parts wanted section if you want to be rid of it OR send me a PM and I will buy it working or not to experiment with. Also with the Auto, you have a 3.55 final drive. Make sure your new front axel also has the 3.55 ratio Good Luck with the truck.

Bingo. Biggest problem with salvage title. Just how much damage was done. Way too many folks sold damaged goods as perfectly fine cars.
-
Exactly correct for california. I had to take the car to a state approved inspection station. They had to sign off on the vact that the brake lights worked and a few other items. Cost me $50 or $60 total for that section. also had to turn in old plates and get new plates with branded title.
-
No experiance with Ohio salvage title. But my truck was branded in California for $2500 a couple of years ago. I fixed the car totally, and some upgrades for just under $2900. Including a decent full paint job. Got about $3500 out of the insurance co in the end. But stuck with the branded title. Otherwise the truck is way, way better than most. Body shop did a great job of pulling all the dings/dents. Very little glazing putty on the truck. Have hundreds of pics to prove it at every stage of the repair. I am going to keep the truck till I can not drive any more (yea, I am 65 years old).. It is still the cheapest work truck I can own. Only need it 2000 to 3000 miles per year and it can haul more than 2500 lbs in the bed and 5000 lbs with a trailer. sure beats dirtying up the SUV. besides, I could drive the Comanche from coast to coast any time I was willing to pay for the gas. My 96 Passat TDI is a much cheaper car for that trip - can you say 48 mpg on the highway For me, in the end, the branded title pisses be off big time. BUT, it does not affect the utility I get from having the truck. Additionally, the truck looks better and has some very nice upgrades (PW/PMirrors/PLocks, Excellent full interior upgrades). And I am not getting rid of the truck. Anything I could do before the salvage title I can still do right now (except sell a clear title).

A good repair shop is worth paying for. I have been using the same shop for the last 13 or 14 years. He is not perfect, but when his guys make a mistake, he owns up to it and fixed the issue. He has done it twice when I had no clue there was an error.

If I had a stock clock that did not work, $30 would be a reasonable price to pay for a repair. I am assuming you mean a mail order repair. I pull the clock, send it with $30 and you mail it back to me.

91 - 92 Mj Instrument Cluster W. Column Shift Indicator & Cable
johnj92131 replied to HOrnbrod's topic in Wanted
Unlike the full gauge blue Renix cluster cases, the white full gauge 91 and up cluster cases do not have the shift indicator mounting bosses. So there is no way to mount the indicator w/o using the HO idiot light cluster. If I could get my hands on one of these HO idiot light clusters that had column shift, I could modify it to full gauges by changing out the back foil. If that makes any sense. Makes perfect sense to me. That is exactly what I will have to do with my own 91 column shifter - Have not figured out a clean way to make the tach face look perfectly stock. Meaning the cut out for the gear indicator. Have played with lifting the back foil. -
Again, just being factual - nothing more. Term limits in Congress require a Constitunal ammendment. The Constutional Ammeddment requires approval by both houses of Congress and by the leguslatures of 3/4th of the states. DO we really think a majority of state legislatures would cut off their future jobs??? Fat chance. Like it or not. We have the best government money can buy. Us chumps just did not buy it. So just try to cut the money from the whores and the John's. Or just enjoy the ride. Damn, my fat fingers and the cell pne keyboard.

If I recall right the car is FWD. But it was the "peak" of inovation for the Olds/GM diesel. don't think aluminun heads made it into production cars. if the price is cheap enough, I say go for it. I was interested in thisvengine for a long time.

Just a factual correction. All "raising revenue" must originate in the House of Representatives. The Senate and the House can each originat a tax or any other law. Laws, including spending bills or taxes can only become Laws after being passed by both houses of congress and being signed by the President. If vetoed (not signed) by the president, a bill can still become law with the concent of 2/3 majority of each house of congress. (Meaning 2/3 of the House and 2/3 of the Senate. Please see the complete Section 7 of the U.S. Constitution of 1787 below: Section 7 1: All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills. 2: Every Bill which shall have passed the House of Representatives and the Senate, shall, before it become a Law, be presented to the President of the United States; If he approve he shall sign it, but if not he shall return it, with his Objections to that House in which it shall have originated, who shall enter the Objections at large on their Journal, and proceed to reconsider it. If after such Reconsideration two thirds of that House shall agree to pass the Bill, it shall be sent, together with the Objections, to the other House, by which it shall likewise be reconsidered, and if approved by two thirds of that House, it shall become a Law. But in all such Cases the Votes of both Houses shall be determined by yeas and Nays, and the Names of the Persons voting for and against the Bill shall be entered on the Journal of each House respectively. If any Bill shall not be returned by the President within ten Days (Sundays excepted) after it shall have been presented to him, the Same shall be a Law, in like Manner as if he had signed it, unless the Congress by their Adjournment prevent its Return, in which Case it shall not be a Law. 3: Every Order, Resolution, or Vote to which the Concurrence of the Senate and House of Representatives may be necessary (except on a question of Adjournment) shall be presented to the President of the United States; and before the Same shall take Effect, shall be approved by him, or being disapproved by him, shall be repassed by two thirds of the Senate and House of Representatives, according to the Rules and Limitations prescribed in the Case of a Bill.

91 - 92 Mj Instrument Cluster W. Column Shift Indicator & Cable
johnj92131 replied to HOrnbrod's topic in Wanted
Don, Imagine you have done an EBay search for the "police" package - some had column shifters I understood. Is the column shifter cable and indicaer the same as in the 87 - 90 Renix? That might widen the search field. -

Anyone know if the 96 cherokee OBDII engine computer is just plug and play substiture for the 95 and earlier OBD1 engine computer? With my 1996 Passat, the OBDII computer was a plug and play substiture for the OBDI computer. No extra wiring, just plug and play. Guess I could just hunt for the 96 computer on Ebay or the Pick and Pull, then plug it in and see if it works. -

2.1 Turbo Diesel 1987 Comanche!!!
johnj92131 replied to TieDyeJK8's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
This poster can not be considered a serious seller. He will not provide any serious information and claims an inability to post pictures. Right now, I am sitting in the Pacific Ocean 100 miles from the Panama Canal and I can post to the web site. Does anyone here realy think they could trust anything this "seller" claims about the truck? I don't. -
