Unimog Axles - crazy dream or expensive possiblity?
jage replied to jage's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yeah well that's sort of a misconception because I don't actually have any money. -
Pull the motor and ditch the YJ and buy another MJ. Heh-heh.

Unimog Axles - crazy dream or expensive possiblity?
jage replied to jage's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The mog 406 axles weight around 700lbs each - "more than a rockwell" as they say. I'm not sure how much the 404s weigh exactly, but I'm sure it's somewhere on google... Ah... http://www.teximog.net/axles.htm 1100lbs for a set. About. I have no idea how that compares to 60s, 44s, or 9"ers. What's a few hundred pounds here or there? :D -
Unimog Axles - crazy dream or expensive possiblity?

The problem I assume with doing spring over on an MJ at 3" would mean getting flatter springs. I don't really see how doing SUA loses that much considering that 5" from portal -2" from SUA still gives you +3" over the same point on a non portal axle with SOA. Given the need to use drop springs and propensity for axle wrap I think doing SUA and gaining 3" or so would be worth it. And the pumpkin wouldn't hang any lower with SOA or SUA. Besides it's only in the back. I think, considering my current parts pile and the state of my project I'm going to go ahead with the 8" build up and get a feeling for how tall that will be, then I can have a better idea about what height unimog axles will get me to. At the least it will be an excuse to buy another MJ in the future. -
You mean using a lower control arm as a traction bar to prevent spring wrap? I'd say sure, but there aren't any control arms with leaves so you're custom mounting and at that point the LCA just becomes another rigid member. Because of the short lenght of the LCA relative to, especially MJ springs I'd say it's not a good choice because I'm not sure how you'd attach it to not impead your travel. Really anything that prevents the axle from twisting is viable, although design for offroad probably begs a little more thought than applications on pavement, as clearance is an issue. In fact, commando14 is using shocks for anti-spring wrap http://www.comancheclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=749. I've always been curious how well this works.

You owe me a Guiness next time I'm in Canada!

O.K. these are right at 19.9kb with dithering and more colors. Slower: And sorry about the thread burglary. Bad habit.

The 160 amp unit should work electrically, AFIK a higher amp rating just allows you to pull more - compressor, winch, a/c etc. You only pull what the regulator allows, anything else is extra potential. At the same price I'd go with the higher amp. If you're concerned about mechanical fit have the guy put them both up on the counter. If the computer says it fits I usually trust 'em, but I only have a 10 min drive so you might want to be more careful.

Unimog Axles - crazy dream or expensive possiblity?

Narrowing one side might shift the pumpkin... exaxt.com doesn't say anything about that. -
I erred a little on the side of cautious so this is only 2/3 of the possible file size. I can use the space to get rid of some of the grainyness if you like it otherwise. I went back and made a slow version with about 10 seconds between each pic... kind of a little less manic version

Yeah execpt I have this 8" skyjacker lift thats been sitting in my garage and I'm not good at selling things. So like around 3" in the front and 3" in the back, keep it SUA. I can't believe I'm still considering this - you people are supposed to be talking me out of it! :D -

Oh well. Should I just go with D44s then? -
Unimog Axles - crazy dream or expensive possiblity?

Ah see that's exactly the sort of thing I hadn't considered. You think 13" is too much for 38s or 40s? I suppose I could use 6" springs instead and it would be 11". -
Right but behind the 2.5L why does that matter?
-
Ok, I've been losing sleep over this. I need to upgrade the 30/35 XJ axles I'm planning to put on my MJ build up and I keep thinking UNIMOG. Specifically Exaxt.com disc converted axles. I figure- high range, AX5, on 38s using 2nd-3rd-5th will be close to using 1st-2nd-3rd on my TJ which has 3.73/32s. Can the 5th gear take it? I know you're not supposed to use 5th offroad, but at highway speed? The second factor is that I'm sportin a 2.5L. I don't think power won't be the issue but top-end speed and high RPMs will (thinking 55mph at 4-5K i need to look at my TJ again). Not really sure, it isn't like thinking about the diff between 4.10 and 4.88s. The axles would be driveshaft driven instead of torque tube, sported on an 8" Skyjacker Rock-Ready XJ suspension. And it's meant to be a trailer queen, but that doesn't mean it will never see pavement. So.. stupid waste of money? Problems I haven't considered? Any and all opinions are welcome. It just keeps rattling around my head- if I'm going to save $$ for axles, why not save for unimog axles?

I have a nice ZJ 4.0L you could stick in with an AX-15.. in Indianapolis. Why would you put an AX-15 behind the 2.5? Keep in mind this is coming from a 2.5/AX5/AtlasII guy... just curious...

I used the brackets from the MJ bench and the XJ seats fit fine, except they wound up being too tall for me. (head on the ceiling)

Here use this: Seriously if you want I can try and make you an animated one that slowly slideshows through a few pics. There is a file size limit, but I can play around and see about squeezing 3 pics in. They everybody can be happy like Mr. B...

New isn't always better. I put Rusty's 6" springs in the back of my XJ and they wrapped like taffy the first time I wheeled it. I wasn't even hitting it, and by the drive home I had a hell of a vibration. When I crawled under it, the springs were totally bent like I'd been pounding on it with a 460 at the strip for years. I took the springs to Warner Spring in town and they rearched them and put a 1" thick dump-truck spring perch under the leaves, covered about 3/4 of the next leaf, a little more than 1/2 the pack. By the time I took 'em off last year the ends had wrapped over the dump-truck leaf. Luckily not enough to cause vibes, but it was still a waste of money. I gave them away about a month ago. Oh, and when the Warner Spring guy gave me back my XJ he said "I went to rearch them and those are the cheapest softest springs I've ever seen." I wish he'd recommended not putting them back on my truck before he'd finished re-arching them. Somehow I doubt your stock springs, or most stuff you get aftermarket, is going to be that cheap of material. But you can always have them rearched and add something if wrap becomes a problem you need to prevent.

Yeah, and they look great too! :D :D

How's that going? I hear unlike the XJs the MJs all had the firewall mod already in anticipation of the 4.0L being used. Oh also, how did taking off the bed go? Are you putting it back? (I'm considering pulling my bed to work on the rear)
-
Well they go in the same place as the stock XJ or MJ springs and hold the front end up. Heh-heh. I'm so funny. Anyway, I ran RE 5.5" ZJ springs in my XJ and I was real happy with them, but I can't give you any hard info because aside from not being stock ZJ springs I had lost all relevance to stock height through swapping Rusty's crap twice before I gave up and bought the REs. And I was sportin' the 2.8 which would throw everything off anyway. Too bad DirtyComanche can't help because it's not like he's replacing stock coils... really what DirtyComanche needs to do is put stock XJ coils on, measure, and then put stock ZJ coils on and measure. While you're at it swap the 4.0 out for a 2.5 and after measuring THAT, put back the XJ coils and measure again. How 'bout it dirty? Science is fun!

I recently sold all the doors and hatch from my 4 door cherokee along with some misc stuff. As we walked around the garage looking at driveshafts, axle shafts, t-cases, full and partial muffler and catty convertors, D30s, 35s and 44s, alternators, and more the guys says: "Why did we bother going to the junkyard! We should have just come here!"
-
It's easier to store and move in one piece, IMHO. You should sell the tires and put some crappy stockers or spares on there, that'll cover your purchase and some mini storage. It's not like you're driving it you just need something it'll roll on.
