Ok, I just remember reading in hotrod about the 290/343/390 V.s. 304/360/401 were they dynoed them against each other and showed the gen 2 made more net power then the gen 3 V8s despite the better heads they noted the reason was the 10.2 comp v.s. 8.3-5 comp ratios. They went more in depth on the 390 showing it was rated at 315 gross but actually turned 332 net horse power versus the 401s rated 215 to the 255 actual net horsepower. The gust I got was for a strong build using OEM rebuild kits/parts. Was to run gen 3 heads on the gen 2 blocks and for the price of a simple rebuild one could have a very strong performer. Mike -

Well I am going to be filling my AX-4 4 speed manual transmission with Mobile 1 GL-5 75w-90, As both my manual and a quick net search listed both 75&80w-90 gear lube/oil as the correct fluids . . . When a switch over to the V8/AX-15 combo I will run what that book says to . . . Mike -

10w-30 engine oil ! Ha ! I wouldn't run that in an engine much less a manual transmission lol your crazy . . . I use 75-140syn or 85-140conv in my gear boxes normally, but the other 2 are what was listed for the AX-4/5 . . . So 75-90 mobile 1 it is end of story, I am confident this trans is trashed anyway but at least its full n clean ;-) ! Mike -
AX-4 whinning, howling, growling, and grinding
AMC-MJ replied to AMC-MJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I knew I could find the answer faster then you sleepy heads, The AX4 holds 3.75qts of 80w-90 or 75w-90 gear oil ! Off to waste money on an AX4, On some 75-90 as it was the most recommended lube to use. Mike -

I'm think about changing out the fluid, tho I am sure damage is already done. How much fluid dose the AX-4 hold ? What dose it take gear oil ? ATF ? Motor oil ? Mike -

Might have to take you up on that offer, cause I don't its going to last very long with how quick it went from one gear to all gears making noise ! Mike -

Also got more tonnage to get rolling too, Now everybody told me my 6.5 wasn't doggy ! BS truck went great empty was a total dog under load even light ones . . . I would rather not use the D35 at all, But if I had to temporally it would hold up as long as I drove it easy. I'm used to my trucks getting up to speed just as fast empty as loaded, The recurring theme is they had the optional low gears and the optional stronger engine. But anywho currently my AX4 I think is about to puke on me, howls n growls in 2nd, 3rd, and reverse . . . Now 1st is starting to whine and 4th grinds when you shift into it but not when you shift out ;-( ! Running out of time so I gotta do something soon Mike -

Ya well if I get rough that D35 will fail, the AMC guys say as long as I don't get rough with it the D35 should handle the 290 under commuting operation. But they warned get on it or get rough with it the 290 will twist it off. Now if I get the AMC-20 it'll already have 4.10s ;-) ! and the D44 will have 4.27s I like gear can't ya tell lol The 290 has the same power curve as the 2.5 so I should try to keep around the same RPM/MPH ratio to, I really don't wanna have it gear to conservative as I do lots of slow road driving running 25-45mph tho some 55-70 driving is done not much. The 290 to 401 are all the same block as I under stand it, but there was 2 different deck hights the 290/343/390 were short decks with 9.0 and 10.2 compression ratios for the 290 and 343 the 390 was 10.2 through its full production run. The 304/360/401 were tall decks they had 8.35-8.50 compression ratios, they were the answer to lower octane fuelk and exhaust emissions . . . 290 was replaced by 304, 343 was replaced by 360, and the 390 was replaced by the 401. Now the 304/360/401 got the newer dog legged heads but the lack of compression hurt power. The 290/343/390 still turned more Net power then the 304/360/401 in stock form. BTW the was first used in 1966 model year, I hope this helps you ! Happy holidays Mike -

For the price of the AMC-20 shipped I can have a D44 with 4.27 gears . . . A used "12 bolt". Isn't not a good enough description I might end up with a GM 1500 axle . . . Had they labeled the axle AMC-20 Model 20 ect referring to it as the AMC axle I would have a more confidence in ordering it ! Mike -

Bla bla pete, I'm not buying an axle I can't see also I think the pricing is a bit high ! 3.73s won't work at all with an OD transmission it will be to doggy loaded. Yes I too can't wait to hear it roar', seriously thinking about that D44 n 4.27s Mike -

If I went with a D44 I would be way to tempted to run the 4.27 gears cause that is just how I am ya know . . . I wouldn't have a problem with tow/hauling or durability/longevity ;-) ! Might be onto some thing here . . . Happy holidays Mike -

:fs1: Trying to find an MJ AMC-20 is proving to be most challenging, So i think i am going to just swap the 3.73's out for 4.10's and just running my D35 till i have an issue with it  Mike -

So basically your all saying: "Figure it out your damn self . . . What do you think this is some sort of Comanche forum" Loads of help guys  Mike -
I'm fairly confident that with a cutting torch one could remove the Cab from the truck  strip it right down to the bare steel, then slice the floor all the way around the outer edges and go up and around the firewall . . . sure it'll be a horrible rotten mess but you'll have technically removed the cab from the truck . . . You'll have a floor less firewall less Cab sitting on the ground and a rolling chassie with a floor pan and fire wall on it. It'll be no different then a plastic model truck you can buy at the hobby shop, Only this'll be life sized and made of steel . . . putting it back together again ? how good can you weld ? Mike

AMC-MJ replied to AMC-MJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I guess different 2.5 means different Rattle/Chatter Seems like all the Big 4's from the home land make noise of some kind even them Ford 2.3s Clattered once they got miles on them. I would still like to know whats up with that rough Idle and if the Chatter/rattle/Clatter is part of it ? been noisy since i bought it, the rough idle is a new thing . . . Mike -
Rough Idle ! ? ! Tune up time ? ? ? . . .
AMC-MJ replied to AMC-MJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Once it reaches operating temp for a few miles it'll chitty chatter while idling . . . Sound's like a loose timing chain rattle against some thing or Rust on the Idler pulley but that would wear off and be here cold as well as hot . . . Maybe the old 2.5er is wearing out :hmm: there is 195K miles on it after all  Unless its just supposed to chatter, I know GM's 2.5 rattled and CryCo's 2.5 chattered, just this sounds way different then the racket those 2 engines make . . . But then again this a different 2.5 . . . Mike
