This Is Not Supposed To Be Here, Is It??
cruiser54 replied to onlyinajeep726's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I just went out to the shed and verified it. Oil runs from the lifter area down on to the timing chain and gears. -
Went out and checked. What you're seeing is normal.

How many of my "Renix Tips" have you performed so far? 1,3,4,5, and 7 for sure.

I think he's seeing the upper jagged edge of the casting that runs down to the timing gears, don't you? -
On top of column just under the dash.

Air has to be getting into the motor somewhere. EGR, intake gasket leak, throttle butterfly is not closed properly....... -

Too late now for me to dig around in my shed and look at an old block. I'm thinking it's normal. Don't lose any sleep over it. -
Have a peek at the plug on the electrical portion of your ignition switch. Probably loose/burned.

Got a shot from the timing chain area? -
Have you driven it yet? Glad to hear you eliminated the C101 and fixed up the sensor grounds!!!

Ever read post 14 in my tips? -
Cruiser, does this have anything to do with the elimination of that pesky C101 connector? My curious mind wishes to know. :) Not really. The 89 and 90s had a more agressive fuel and timing curve programmed into them. That said, eliminating the C101 is NEVER a bad idea!!

Remove the intake boot and look from the driver's side fender. The bleed hole is directly above the IAC in the throttle body. -
Test the CPS. Here's how. And if you click on the link in my signature, you'll find some things to do which address the issue you're describing. I recommend posts 1,3,4, and 5 for sure. Also realize that your era of Jeep does not start instantly like you're used to with other vehicle. Usually a 3 to 5 second crank time is normal. Renix CPS Testing and Adjusting Renix CPSs have to put out a strong enough signal to the ECU so that it will provide spark. Most tests for the CPS suggest checking it for an ohms value. This is unreliable and can cause some wasted time and aggravation in your diagnosis of a no-start issue as the CPS will test good when in fact it is bad. The problem with the ohms test is you can have the correct amount of resistance through the CPS but it isn’t generating enough voltage to trigger the ECU to provide spark. Unplug the harness connector from the CPS. Using your voltmeter set on AC volts and probing both wires in the connector going to the CPS, crank the engine over. It won’t start with the CPS disconnected. You should get a reading of .5 AC volts. If you are down in the .35 AC volts range or lower on your meter reading, you can have intermittent crank/no-start conditions from your Renix Jeep. Some NEW CPSs (from the big box parts stores) have registered only .2 AC volts while reading the proper resistance!! That’s a definite no-start condition. Best to buy your CPS from Napa or the dealer. Sometimes on a manual transmission equipped Renix Jeep there is an accumulation of debris on the tip of the CPS. It’s worn off clutch material and since the CPS is a magnet, the metal sticks to the tip of the CPS causing a reduced voltage signal. You MAY get by with cleaning the tip of the CPS off. A little trick for increasing the output of your CPS is to drill out the upper mounting hole to 3/8” from the stock 5/16”, or slot it so the CPS bracket rests on the bell housing when pushed down. Then, when mounting it, hold the CPS down as close to the flywheel as you can while tightening the bolts. Revised 01-26-2013

See post 16 and 17. http://comancheclub.com/topic/42714-renix-to-ho-head-swap/

Now THIS would/could be constructive.

Wrong again. The HO injectors work very well in the Renix. Mileage is fine. I've done it more than once. The ECU controls the flow quite nicely. The flow rate on the injectors is about the same. Where do you come up with this stuff? Wikipedia is wrong about the horsepower numbers. They left out 89 and 90 which were 182. I worked at the dealership back then as Service Manager. 1980 til 1992. Wiki is wrong again. The HO used the SAME cam as the renix through at least 1995. Stock Cam Specs The stock '87-'95 Jeep 4.0 camshaft is a single pattern cam with the following specs: Advertised duration int./exh.: 270.0/270.0 deg Duration @ 0.050" lift int./exh.: 197.0/197.0 deg Valve lift int./exh.: 0.424"/0.424" Lobe separation angle: 112 deg Intake centerline angle: 110.5 deg Valve overlap: 46 deg IVO: 12 deg ATDC (0.050" lift) IVC: 29 deg ABDC EVO: 32 deg BBDC EVC: 15 deg BTDC Same profile. POSSIBLY different cam timing but I'm not 100% on tht. If they use the same cam and crank gears, I would assume no.

Up under the dash to the right of the steering column. Held in with three 10mm headed bolts. -
Old buddy here in town has a beautiful 88 Pioneer 2wd for sale.... I don't need any more vehicles though.

I remember seeing a thread on NAXJA many years ago also. I've tried finding it but have also been unsuccessful. I can still see the pictures in my mind. Do we need to do some hypnosis? Past life transgression? Or, can carnuck, who posted this in the first place, provide some real evidence?
-
Why? Am I the only one that feels this way? Am I stating things that are untrue? Is carnuck not seeing things as they really are? Unsuspecting folks need to be protected from distracting, often incorrect info posted by carnuck. Not to mention the fact the "damage control" that must be done to undo the shotgun posting done by him. Don't we owe that to other members? PMing with him will have little as far as results. He just doesn't get it. The warnings/alerts MUST be posted in the numerous threads he "shotguns" here, just as he does in other forums. I'm tired of the excuses of "I was half kidding". "I had an accident at the dealership". "Sometimes I see things backwards". All excuses for irresponsible posting, creating work for other responsible members. Not just me.

I thought carnuck could enlighten us since he's done it.............
