Looking for driveshaft lengths of stock trucks

I don't think of anybody as a jerk. Until they prove to me that they are. You haven't done that. This is a forum where everyone is free to express an opinion and help each other. -
Looking for driveshaft lengths of stock trucks

Perhaps a little explanation here of where I'm coming from, or been, might throw a little light on the subject. I drove my first Jeep, a surplus MB on grand dads farm in Mo. I was 12 , the year was 1947. He had 4 of them. They were sold in lots of 4 at the surplus auctions to keep the little people out.And to keep the auto dealers, manufacturers happy. I've been a jeep man ever since, probably owned over 2 dozen of them, MB's,GPW'S, CJ'S, FC150-170,Waggoneers, Gladiators,J10, J20.Thats not counting another 2 or 3 dozen junkers or parts vehicles. I could disassimble a CJ and reassemble it blindfolded.I never had anything to do with a XJ or MJ and was completely unfamiliar with them until maybe a year ago I bought a 89 Cherokee, wrecked. In the next 5-6 months I had 11 wrecked and 4 running XJ'S. Then in Aug this year I got my first MJ.So the point is I was not all that familiar with MJ'S and may have assumed or jumped to the wrong conclusion to quickly. I now have 5 MJ'S and a little more knowledge of them, with a lot of credit for that knowledge going to the fine knowledgeable people in CC.When I got my first one, a 1989 SB, 2WD,5speed and I assumed it was all original based on what I could see. I got a Chilton manual and checked out everything to see what I had. Which I determined to be a 2.5 a AX15 and a Dana 35. A more careful recent inspection reaafirms the AX 15 but not the motor. I'm still not sure it's ancestry but working on it. I apologize for all the confusion I created when I stated 'ALL ORIGINAL" but I'm still happy with the son of a gun and wish I'd found MJ sooner.Jim  -
Got a Rt Rear quarter window if ya want it. Only piece of glass wasn't busted in the 2001 I got for donor.

I only mentioned Greenland and Israel-Egypt because those were the most extreme, and so close together timewise weather changes I experienced. I've also lived-worked in Colorado, my home, Kansas, Raton, Los Alamos, Las Cruces, New Mexico,Blaine Wa, North Bend Or, Bangor Me, Madison Wi, San Jose Ca, Sumter, SC, Ft Bragg, NC, Ft Campbell, Ky. Ft Benning, Ga. Max Creek, Mo. Itazuki, Japan, Some God awful place in Korea, Elizondo, Spain, Kwajalien, Marshall Islands, Rio De Janeiro, SA, Near Alice Rock, Australia. DaNang, VietNam,Some were better than others,Some I'd just as soon never see again. And they all had weather of some kind.If I had a motorcycle I enjoyed it. If I didn't I tolerated it. Some of them had Jeeps. Some didn't. Had to mention something to do with the forum.

Have built over a couple dozen frames, Mostly trailer and dune buggy with a couple 'special application' thrown in. You would be better off financialy and work wise to find a good frame. However if you want the experience then fix the one you got. Just make a good plan B4 you start.

Add to the confusion some more. Getting a little annoyed at being doubted by my claim of a AX15 in my '89 with 2.5 I went out and checked. First moved the truck to get it out of the snow. Second raised it up high enough to get under it. Checked the manual to determine a sure fire way to ID a AX5-15. Crawled under truck.cold water immediately began dripping down my neck. Measured gearbox. 16 1/2 inches. End of fact finding tour.Scrapeing grease off surrounding area revealed a 3/4 inch (approximate) aluminum plate between tran and bell housing. Does not look original. To cold to do any more came into house and warmed up. As soon as I get the CJ3 I'm working on out of the garage the MJ is going in for further analysis to confirm a growing suspicion. Jim By the way, have 5 MJ driveshafts. They ALL have the sticker on them. Rear ones, Don't know about the front. -
I'll drink to that. Hell. I'll drink to anything.

While browsing EBay I found Comanche 4.0L, '87-'91 fuel pumps for $33.99, with free shipping. These things go for $90 at the local auto store.

Use a torque wrench. Keep a close eye on the indicator. Now tighten until the bolt head snaps off. Torque the remaining bolts to 90% of that reading. Or, if your short of bolts: 2.5 and 2.8, 23ft. lbs 2.1, 16 ft. lbs 4.0, 40 ft lbs If your gonna be doin a lot of work, ALL Jeep owners should do their own maintenance, Get a Chilton or Haynes manual, or if your serious, get the Factory service manual. It helps if you give all pertinant information on what your workin on. Jim -

This outfit has a listing on EBay for side trim and tailgate decals. I need both. Has anyone here had any experience good or bad, with them? I work to hard for my money to spend it on shoddy merchandise. :help:

I meant for this post to go under the 'What did you do to youir MJ today' thread but obviously I hit 'New Topic' instead of WDYDTYMJT.Well since it's here let's hear the rest of the story. Then it probably shud go under Tech instead of The Pub. I'll let Pete worry about that. Back in Aug,this tear, I was looking at some property to buy in the mountains. When leaving I got a glimpse of something in a group of trees. It was a Jeep P/U, a Comanche.I didn't know a Comanche from a canoe but I knew Jeep. Asked the fellow if it was for sale. 2 minutes later he had a $100 in his pocket and I had a MJ, LR flat tire, other 3 low, motor buried under 7 years of wildlife inhabitation, interior stunk so bad couldn't stick my head past the door, and a bed full of construction material garbage.Last registered and drove in '02.Home to get the trailer 60 miles.Got it loaded and home that nite. The first mile down the highway all you cud see were critters bailin out. Get to the point, First a real good and thorough cleaning. Finally found the engine, determined it to be 4 cyl.First thing I was gonna do was pull it and replace it with a V8. Never happened. Replaced all the wiring and several relays under the hood. Got half a dozen Cherokees for parts so no problem there. Removed and cleaned out the gas tank. It was rust free but full of gunk. All the rubber was dissolved. I think the guy had put some Ethenal or something in it.Replaced fuel pump, all rubber hoses and gaskets and filter.Fresh gas.Battery, checked fluids.Hit key.Third try it fired off and ran like a champ. No smoke, No noise, just a smooth runnin engine. So far so good. I've had this thing up to 80+ and no problems, Everything works. Now, the problem. It doesn't always start. When it starts it runs fine and no trouble for the rest of the day. However sometimes it doesn't start and nothing I do helps. It gets spark, weak but still spark.Haven't put a pressure guage on the manifold yet but when I push in the valve fuel shoots out. I get disgusted and walk off. Come back later, some times it starts, sometimes it don't.Thing is when it starts it starts right off. When it doesn't nothin helps. We're talking about a 1989 SWB, 2WD,2,5L.5speed AX15,Dana 44, 4:11. and 99% rust free.Only rust is under the rear fender flares and you have to take them off to see it. I have already copied all the hints an tips posted under "Truck suddenly won't start" and "Hard starting Renix" from the tech forum. So don;t repeat 'em. Stay tuned for further mishaps and perhaps a chuckle or two. Jim :headpop:  :headpop:

I got it started. It was 2 above and altho it turned over just fine it didn't want to start. It wud just sort of gallup along and quit when I released the key.Ether was no help. After 10 minutes, I'm surprised the battery lasted, It fired and ran just fine. '89 2.5,

Not sure of the comparison of water to gravel other than a cubic yard of water occupies the whole volume of the container whereas a cubic yard of gravel only occupies maybe a little over half, the other half being air.
-
Gotta quit doin figures in my head. Once again Eagle comes to the rescue.
-
It depends on how finely it's crushed and the moisture content.Basicallly gravel is calculated to weigh a little over 1/2 ton per cubic yard. 1,080lbs to be exact.1 cubic yard will cover 3 sq yards when spread to a depth of 4in.

Have a '89 2WD, 225K, with 2.5,5sp, 4.11's and 215R75/15.I've had the speedo pegged, that's over 80 on straight level road with no wind. I have no problem coming off the on ramp and merging with freeway traffic. It runs circles around my S10 with 2.8V6. OKOK that's no surprise. Just thot I'd mention it. Just because it's a 4 banger don't sell it short.Jim
