One other point. The computer. It doesn't adjust from one set of conditions to another instantaneously in some circumstances, and sometimes needs to be recycled several times to adjust. Once when I was living in (Unnamed to protect the guilty), NM a local grocery store with gas pumps got a load of diesel mixed in with the reg gas. The owner denied everything. It was several weeks before various owners got to comparing notes and realized that in fact it was the stations fault. Faced with a lawsuit the supplier who had in fact filled the tank with diesel and dealer came up with a settlement. -
It's not the engine but the year. I have several '84, '85, XJ and '86 XJ and MJ 2.5 and 2.8.All have the bottle on the left fender. '87 up are on the firewall.

Driveway Tranny Drop...any tips?
jimoshel replied to ParadiseMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Alternative to a tranny jack, depending on the circumstances, is a 4X4( I have used 2X4) resting on the 2 front door window sills, or dash and seat back. with a come-a-long. Drop the tran working thru the hole in the floor instead of from the ground. I've also used a cherry picker, running the arm in thru the doorway with a cable going thru the hole in the hump to the tranny. -
You were fortunate in having a PP. Patient Parent. I would also like to add NEVER EVER SHOULD A HUSBAND TEACH A WIFE TO DRIVE!!!!!!! Ain't shouting. Just emphasizing.

1987 Jeep Comanche 2wd to 4wd
jimoshel replied to ComancheMan7893's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I buy up almost every wrecked Jeep and especially XJ'S that I see or find, especially rolled ones. In a direct collision there is normally too much damage to mechanical components to be salvaged. However in a rollover the body absorbs most of the punishment and the drivetrain remains damage free. There are exceptions of course. So far I have converted a '89 MJ to 4wd using a '89XJ and a '87MJ using a '89XJ donor. I'm getting ready to do another '89 using a 2001 donor. Another advantage to buying the complete car over buying separate parts is you can start and run them, telling you what shape they're in.Buying the whole car from an individual is cheaper than buying individual parts from a JY. Plus you sell what you don't use. -
Never take driving lessons from a parent. Friends, relatives, cousins, uncles, aunts, strangers but never a parent.

I'm starting to think you just got a bad tank of gas. I find it hard to believe that you would use E85 (yellow and black label, Pump seperated from others, etc) instead of 85. Either way you still need to drain and flush your system. When you drain it, let it sit awhile, Impurities, water etc will separate and maybe give a clue what happened. And smell it. You can smell the dif between 85 And E85, -
And once again I am unable to get a pic to post. The bolts are 10X1.5X3 mm. I would use 10X1.5X2 so there isn't that extra mm to rust, 15mm socket. Standard hex head bolts, Altho the two front ones on mine were studs and the other 6 were hex bolts. Also the 2 front ones were the only 2 I got out without twisting the head off. Jim

I run nothing but 85 octane in all my vehicles. Airplanes excepted. In the Harley I notice a difference between 85, 87 and 90 but not enough to pay the higher price. No problems of any kind. There is a difference between E85 and 85. E85 get it out of the system. The Ethanol eats rubber hoses, gaskets and seals. -
I just pulled the bed off my MJ yesterday. Give me a hour and I'll have pics for ya. Fixin breakfast now.

The starter will work just fine. Auto FW bolts will usually be shorter than stanard FW bolts but not always. If you have the bolts from both then compare them. Anyway flywheel bolts stretch when torqued properly and should be replaced.

Inline 6 issues (no heat & high oil pressure)
jimoshel replied to holeski's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You should run a compression check. All cylinders should be 120 to 140PSI and within 20PSI of each other. -
Yes.

Just checked every skid under everything I got. One, They're ALL plastic. Two, They're all full of dirt, just begging to accumulate moisture so they can rust the tank. After pulling your carpets to check for rust maybe better drop your skids and check them also. or just remove them. From what I've seen I think if you got the plastic just remove them. If you got the metal, leave a space between the skid and tank so you can hit it with a hose and clear the crap out. :dunno:

A public school teacher was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport as he attempted to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a compass, a slide-rule, and a calculator. At a morning press conference, the Attorney General said he believes the man is a member of the notorious Al-Gebra movement. He did not identify the man, who has been charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction. "Al-Gebra is a problem for us," the Attorney General said. "They derive solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in search of absolute values. They use secret code names like 'X' and 'Y' and refer to themselves as 'unknowns', but we have determined that they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country." As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, "There are three sides to every triangle." When asked to comment on the arrest, President Obama said, "If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, he would have given us more fingers and toes." White House aides told reporters they could not recall a more intelligent or profound statement by the President; It is believed that another Nobel Prize will follow. :rotf: :fool:

Rear axle leaking on 86 4X4 xls
jimoshel replied to wyk's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Considering the age and unknown what any previous owner may have done or swapped out on these MJ'S a RPO is almost useless. Just do a physical inspection and go from there. IF it's original there will be one or two tags mounted on the differential housing cover. One on the left hand side giving build date and gear ratio. If it's a limited slip there will be another tag on the right hand side giving the data on it. In the real world either one or both of these tags are missing. Jack up the rear axle so both wheels are off the ground. Turn one wheel. If the other wheel turns the same way it's posi tra, and needs friction modifier. if it turns opposite direction it's not. Look on the back of the axle housing, left hand side. Numbers there will give you manufacture and build date. To fill it, just fill it up even with the fill hole. Any parts house should have gaskets, bearings, etc. -
Yo Jim,, I'll swap ya an original Guttenburg bible printed in 20 A.D. with an authentic autographed pic of JC hisself and a quart of JD for a couple of of yer books. :huh???: :fool:

Quick smoke check. Go up a steep hill.Don't lug the motor but make it work. If it smokes your rings are worn. Turn around and go down the hill. Ride compression, No gas. If it smokes your seals are bad.

Define "Hard". Seals aren't to difficult, Just don't drop a valve into the cylinder. If you have a reasonably equipted shop the you know the air pressure trick. If you don't then use the rope trick. Remove the spark plug.locate the piston about half or 3/4 of the way up. Fill the cylinder with a length of rope. Rotate the crank until the the piston jams. Do the seal job. Back the piston off. Remove the rope. Lifters requires the removal of the head and for a 'V' engine the intake manifold. If your doing the lifters and seals at the same time, ignore the above info. Do the seals while the heads off.
