What size and brand of tires are on the truck now? Cheap worn tires could make a truck drive real squirrely. I have always had good luck Bridgestone Dueler HT's, the last set I had on there rolled 52k miles. On my street cars I always run Michelin's.

Compression Test Gone Awry!!!
airspeed replied to ParadiseMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I would think a leak-down gauge be a much more accurate tool to use, it would give you more information. Here is a good write up on compression verses leak-down. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-engine-fuel/338152-compression-leak-down-testing.html -
The last time I was over at Costco getting tires I saw a rack that had a bunch of chrome lugs in it. I bet they had ~400 lug nuts in there, all different sizes and styles. $1.39 ea.

Yes, too tight, difficult to turn. When they had the truck up in the air with the tie rod disconnected it was difficult to turn the steering knuckle, had to use a breaker bar to rotate the knuckle. Sears screwed that up twice and the third time they got it right, that's when the tech showed me what memory steer was. Is there caster adjustment on an MJ front end?
-
I had a problem with my MJ, it would always track in a line where you point it but it would not stay on center. It is called "memory steer", you would constantly be correcting the direction of travel. The ball joints were too tight.

I have a Zoom modem / router sitting on my desk that that registers ~ 120F coming out the top of the unit. I can find no documentation on the unit or in the manual on how much power it consumes. This must be a major energy HOG!

I have heard nothing but bad about those engines. GM took the 350 gas engine and tried to convert it to diesel. At this altitude they have about 70-80 HP and smoke like an old locomotive.

I bought my 88 from a retired couple, they towed it behind their RV for 20 years. My transmission, xfer case and differentials have been running fine for 306k.

Mines up to 306K. It's my daily driver with a long commute. The best gas mileage I ever recorded was 24.6 mpg. Don't remember the date of this photo ~Feb.

Here is a photo of the down pipe from my son's 96 Cherokee 4.0. Even with this pipe in there the vehicle runs fine. He can tow a dual snowmobile trailer over a high mountain pass ~11,000ft no problem. His vehicle has about 240k and runs strong. When you look at it this photo there is a bit of an optical illusion, the dimples in the pipe are above and below each other, but the restriction is at least 30% if not more.

Years ago when the kids were little we were sitting around on Christmas eve talking about Santa Claus. Daddy how is Santa going to come through our fireplace? Gas fireplace with glass front that had been burning for 4 hours. I leaned over and pretended like I was looking up the chimney, Oh he can get through there. Then I lost my balance and my forehead came in contact with the glass, I couldn't pull back fast because there was nowhere to put my hands. The kids thought that was funny and my son was amazed the spot I left on the glass. To this day I still hear about that... I avoided all Christmas pictures that year.

New Shocks, Monroe Sensa Track Load Levelers
airspeed replied to airspeed's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yes I had stock ride height to start with. I had a heck of a time trying to install them. I jacked the truck up by the rear differential and took the old shocks out. Put the new shock on the top pin and thought how on earth will I ever compress this shock to mount on the lower pin. I felt like a fool for about 15 minutes then I lifted the truck from the frame and let the axle hang down, they went right on. Here is the data from the Monroe application guide. 58497 L1 L1 14.000 23.375 9.375 V/R P829 -
New Shocks, Monroe Sensa Track Load Levelers
airspeed replied to airspeed's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The Monroe p/n is 58497. Why they don't cross this p/n over to the Comanche, I don't know. They have the 5/8" loop fittings on both ends, it must have something to do with the min - max travel dimensions. -
One of the biggest complaints I had with the Comanche is you put anything in the back and it will drop. Well I think I found the solution. Rockauto $62 delivered. These shocks gave my truck about 3/4" of lift. They ride is SMOOTH, no bounce. When I sit on the back of the tailgate the truck will drop about 1/4".

That is good if there is no water coming out with the engine running and up to temp. I would think you would have a major exhaust leak... Where the problem will come if you take the head in for repair and the shop drills those studs through the water jacket, then you have a leak.
-
Remove the forward most bolt, or in my case the threaded stud. Reach in the hole with a wire and see if you can feel the bottom. If you had a wet bolt at one of those locations, with the engine running, you could see water bubbling out on the header when the engine is up to temp and under pressure. As it cools down it will leave a little puddle of water on the ground and then it stops until the next heat cycle.
-
Blind means they have a bottom, they do not break into the water jacket.
-
Mark my words, they will start leaking. The shop took my head back in exchange, they agreed the holes must be blind. I put tape on my bolts but in about 1- 2k miles they started leaking. I tried special high temp silicone, J-B Weld and thread locker, nothing worked. When they sent me the new head with the blind holes the problem was solved.

I found the build sheet on my 88 tucked up under the seat springs on the passenger side.

I just upgraded with a D44 limited slip with 3.55's. What a upgrade, that adds so much to the 2WD, it is fun. It is impressive how that will pull out of the mud and snow. Another advantage is having the 2.5l, that is like built in traction control. I paid $350 but then I went and put new bearings and seals.
