Shifter lighting, what sockets?
schardein replied to knever3's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The harness for the console lights looks like this. One light is for the transfer case shifter indicator, the hole it plugs into is part of the console. The other is for the transmission shifter (if automatic) and goes into the transmission shifter indicator, which is a separate part from the console. This harness plugs into the cab harness as it comes forward from the back wall of the cab, that harness includes the wire that plugs into the driver side female seatbelt. It's been a while since I had one that far apart, and can't recall if the plug is present even if the console wasn't an option, but I assume it is, especially in the early years. -

Almost feel like I should start a new topic. This turned out to be quite an exercise. At first, I couldn't get the filler piece out. Usually they almost fall out. I had to get a very thin electrical terminal tool to get in there and pop it out. The back is a beige color, like the back of some woodgrain ones I've seen. It also has duct tape-like tape on the sides. This bezel has been on my XJ so long I'd forgotten. Had to peel the tape back. Then had to carefully clean the tape adhesive residue off to see the last part of the number. 5500 3101 84-86 parts manual shows this as FILLER, STEERING COLUMN LIMITED 88-90 parts manual shows it as FILLER, STEERING COLUMN WOODGRAIN -
I've got a write up on moving the alternator up. Just spent 30 min looking for it with no luck. It doesn't move it to the top, but does get it higher up. I'll look more later. Another option that I haven't fully figured out is the 97-01 XJ right hand drive mount. There is interference between the belt and a timing cover bolt head. And you would end up with 2 belt adjustment points, not necessarily a bad thing. Pic 1 stock pic 2-4 on a 1991HO with 99+ intake and PS brackets/pump

Painting the instrument cluster bezel

The grill came home with me. The fog lights were in bad shape, worse than they appear. It was hard to walk away from the taillights, but the rear hatch wouldn't open, and I didn't have time to work with it. -
When I added the H4 lights to my CJ, I added the relays and built the harness from scratch. I used 14awg wire and ceramic terminal housings that plug into the light. Something to be aware of if building your own harness, the male terminals on the headlight (or H4 bulb in this case) is not your standard 1/4" wide male tab. It is wider, 5/16" wide and requires a Packard 59 series terminal (versus the more common Packard 56 terminals). Part number is 2973216 to fit a 16/14 gauge wire. These terminals use a specific crimper that crimps the terminal to the wire and to the insulation at the same time. You can use standard automotive crimpers in a pinch, and some practice/experience helps, but you won't get the same results as the professional level crimpers. I don't remember what bulb I am currently using. Way back in the day, I bought the highest watt rating bulb I could find (130w/90w, I think?), but I think I have the 100/80w in it now. I used a standard 30a rated relay for the low beams, and a 40a rated relay for high.

My brain must be having a hard day today, I'm not following what a "vent visor" is.

Ahhhh I can't believe it! I don't know about the other answers, but I just checked and that's it (dash bezel retaining clips), and I was just thinking I needed to look for these because my newly painted cordovan dash is missing a clip, and they've been staring me in the face for months... thanks to everyone for the replies.

I am 58% sure this is a XJ/MJ part, but could be a Chevy part or... anything really. Story: I have had these sitting around for months on the corner of my work desk. I kept thinking they were the item in the second picture, which is 100% a Jeep XJ/MJ part, the screw clip goes on the cigarette lighter panel and is what the bottom right dash panel screw goes into (a very specific part). So today I look at these... other things.... and realize they are NOT what I thought. First pic is the mystery. Not a game, I saved these for a reason but now have no clue haha.

HAHA, it was a shame. It hurt my heart to pull pieces out of it. I got there late in the day and knew I really didn't have time to pull the seats, so I put it out of my mind. Hopefully someone else got them and put them to use. Interior was beautiful, outside was a little rough. -

Heck yeah. Of all the interior colors, I could see gray and black being non-candidates for a color matched dash. Something to contrast the color, like the woodgrain or brushed aluminum looks great. -

Haha what's the shaking head? Don't like the color matched dash, or the cordovan color in general? Cordovan sure wasn't my first choice, but it's what my truck had when I got it, and have to say it's really grown on me. Thank you. I'm curious now how many MJs out there have a color matched dash bezel. -

The older XJs/MJs had much nicer interiors than the later years. I think the color matched dashes look really sharp. Here is the filler piece in my XJ, it is a matching brushed aluminum. I scored these years ago in the salvage yard, but don't remember details. Wish I'd kept better notes. -

Thanks for posting that picture! I was wondering, and it was hard to tell from the XJ Waggy pics, if the color went right up to the chrome edge, or if that recessed edge outside of it would remain black also. Going by this, I got it right. The brushed aluminum are super hard to find. I've got one in my XJ, and this one, but it's missing the filler piece beneath the column -

This is an older shot of my interior. I now have bucket seats and a silver/gray faced instrument bezel. To use the cordovan painted bezel, I'm confident I'd have to paint the steering column to match, put a cordovan color steering wheel cover on, and use a cordovan horn button. More or less duplicating the XJs/MJs with higher factory trim level interiors. -

I haven't tried installing it yet. But the SEM Burgundy has been a near perfect match on another piece I painted, that also started out black. These are the S10 Blazer replacement B pillar lights. The Cordovan/burgundy/maroon can appear different in photos, I guess depending on the light. In person, it's a very close match. -

I had this fairly clean, uncut plain black bezel with chrome edges. Masked it off, and sprayed three coats of the SEM burgundy color coat #15063. I think it came out pretty good. -
Ever since I saw this 1985 XJ Wagoneer in the junkyard, I've wanted to try painting an instrument cluster bezel.

I know this is somewhat of an old post, but I've got one of every version clock (I think) on hand, if anyone has questions or wants pictures. I've got pinouts on all of them I believe. I really intended to do a clock write up but just haven't gotten around to it. The link that Pete posted is a very good article and I'm not sure what I could add to it. Unfortunately, when I started collecting the clocks at first, I didn't keep track of what they came out of. It's not uncommon to see these clocks listed for sale (eBay, Facebook, craigslist) and the seller will say "85-96" or some variation. That's not correct, and as Jeremy stated, these changed almost every year during MJ production. The good news is in most cases, if you are willing to cut off and replace connectors, you can make any of them work in any year. I also discovered that after thinking the factory wiring was there in all XJs out to 96, that isn't the case. I'm not 100% positive when the vehicle side wiring stopped, but some 95-96 XJs I have looked at don't have it. It would make sense if it stopped in 92 when the clocks were on the radio (as Jeremy said) but of course we are talking about Jeeps here. The most common issue I've seen with these clocks is the "adjustment holes" will jam up and either resist working to adjust time, or prevent the clock from working at all. Maybe that's from rough treatment, or some other cause, but I've only had a handful out of maybe 30 that didn't work.

Chrome tail gate handle on eBay

I suspect they skimped on the prep, which is key for chrome plating. Makes sense some came out better than others. -
Chrome tail gate handle on eBay
schardein replied to schardein's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
Yes, some of the non-plated ones rust away to nothing. I've seen several of these chrome ones, and they all looked similar. I think the chrome wasn't the best quality and that's what they're going to look like- I wouldn't be surprised if a NOS one looked the same, perhaps with less rust on the back. I don't think this one was heavily rusted, then polished. Comanche tailgates are somewhat rare, it follows that handles are too, and chrome ones even more so. I can't recall seeing one of these sell before, so nothing to base a fair price off of. -
Buy it now for $300, is that a great deal, about right, or too high? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Jeep-Comanche-Chrome-Tailgate-Handle/164393160612?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

OK, wasn't even sure what crowd to address this to, but I have this project idea and would like input. I've got a bunch of these 1" x 3" metal dash plaques from Jeep Jamborees that I have attended. Many of them have adhesive magnets on the back. I used to display these on my dash, later on the lower part of the windshield frame in my CJ. My dash is now stainless, and I'm running out of room on the W/S frame. So my thought was to have these digitally scanned and then printed and stuck on my dash. Perhaps printed as stickers, or perhaps printed on metal, perhaps one piece for several plaques (say, 6 or 9 on one piece), or perhaps simply printed on photo paper which I could display, but might have to replace every couple years. Also considering reducing them in size slightly to better fit the space. OK, I don't know if this is crazy, or completely doable, or somewhere in between. Appreciate any ideas or experiences.

Looking for a driver side, gray Husky floor liner for my XJ. The thin plastic molded type. Part number is 3010, pic is what I am looking for, except in gray.

The next time I drive my CJ at night, I'm going to look at it with a more critical eye. The current lights have been in there for 4? years or so. I do recall aiming them, then finding I had a stripped adjuster, replacing that, more aiming, test drives, to get it where I thought it was right. I've experienced a similar problem to what you described on my Silverado. I replaced the low beam lights with HID bulbs, mainly because I got them more or less for free in a big used parts purchase. Amazingly bright, but I had to adjust them way down to avoid blinding other drivers, which really limits their potential range. Several adjustments got me to a compromise of not blinding people and still having decent range, which is way below their full potential. As for light pollution, I've not given it much thought. I've travelled a little bit and spent time in some places where there was no electricity for many grid squares (either because it was never there, or had been knocked out) and driven through them with headlights, blackout drive lights (like driving with a candle on your bumper), and with no lights but using night vision or thermal imagers. I used to check the phases of the moon before we went out because that would have a big effect.
