Project AMC-V8 / 5spd / AMC-20 MJ . . .
jpnjim replied to AMC-MJ's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches

Oh' sure they are, I can't even count how many of us here have Hybrid MJ's. ;)

Project AMC-V8 / 5spd / AMC-20 MJ . . .
jpnjim replied to AMC-MJ's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
This guy, in PA, has a 71' Javelin Model 20 for $15: http://amccars.net/cgi/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1277333191 Same width as an XJ/MJ rear, w/10x2.5" drums (if they're included), and it's SUA, but the perches are in the wrong location (at XJ width). It does have horrible 2-piece axleshafts, just like a CJ (but with our 5 on 4.5" patturn), but for $15, it would be worth buying aftermarket axleshafts. :dunno: He doesn't specify gear ratio (71' Javelin M20 should be either 2.87, 3.15, 3.54, or 3.91, depending on engine/trans combo) -
:agree: Mine too. It was actually a ton more fun in the XJ (open/open, on 32's), than the last time I had taken the MJ (locked/locked on 33.5's). Tho I had to use the skinny pedal alot more. I *REALLY* need to finish the MJ.

98' XJ, that I used to wheel, lately it's been 'her' daily driver: (sorry, pic isn't very recent  ) Her Jeep is a 96' ZJ, with 98K miles & a toasted transmission (waiting for me to finally swap in a replacement), couldn't find any handy pics of that in the photobucket. And then there's the 'Honorary Jeep' ('Jeep' drivetrain: AMC360/4spd/Model 20 rear/3.91's) (ignore the 401 badges, the 401 never made it out of my basement ;) )

(Assuming your's is a Renix 4.0L) You could just spend the $12, and order one. :dunno: http://www.amazon.com/Standard-Motor-Pr ... B000C7YAA2 I just ordered two from these guys yesterday (through Amazon), 2 from them is still cheaper than getting 1 from Rockauto: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframe ... C87-273614 I'll post the good/bad about "Cerell Distributing Company, Inc", and if that's the right CPS after I get them if you want. My 89' 4.0L has been slow starting, so I cleaned off the CPS, but set it too deep when I re-installed it, it started back up, but the flywheel started eating it. I backed it out, it still works, but I'm a little less trusting of it right now. :ack: :ack:

Comanche of the month, Jul 2010 --- Comanche09's 1988

There's some small stuff you could do to an MJ to get a tighter turning radius: Narrowing the rear track width helps with turning radius. There's not much room for tires as it is, with the wide frame rails, but if your type of racing doesn't require wide tires, running factory 15x6's reduces track width 1" under what you'd get with the factory 15x7's. Beyond that, you could go with a narrower axle, but you'll run out of tire room fast. Re-drill the spring perches on your axle to move the axle forward & reduce wheelbase. Doesn't require major work to move your axle an inch, or two either way, just move the pin hole in the perch, and be sure to drill the corresponding hole in the U-bolt plate for the back side of the spring pin to come through. You could swap in shorter leaf springs + the above to take 4-5", or more out of the wheelbase. XJ leafs should be good for an inch, or two less wheelbase (I put XJ leafs on an MJ I was junking, it looked like a 1-2" shorter WB). Swapping XJ leafs means you could cut wheelbase, without moving the ft spring eye brackets, tho you would have to relocate the shackle brackets. As a side effect, you could cut off more of the overhang with XJ leafs, than if you kept the MJ leafs. You'd need to shorten you driveshaft if you moved your wheelbase much. Modify your knuckles for more steering angle at the wheel, like dasbulliwagen already said. You'd probably have to modify the LCA's to use all the steering angle (or use modified WJ LCA's)

NV3500 is the Chrysler version, that has a cast in bellhousing (one piece with the transmission, yeah that was a stupid idea. ) NV3550 was the version used on Jeep's (4.0L), starting in 2000. It used a separate bellhousing (same bell as the AX-15, for interchangeability) Some AMC/Jeep 4 cylinders did get NV3550's behind them, but only when used in Dakota's. And like everyone said, 4.0L's have a different bell pattern than 2.5L's. 4.0L's got the same bell pattern as 1972+ AMC/Jeep L6's & 66-91 AMC V8's. 2.5L AMC's got the metric GM bell pattern. I don't know what year Wranglers switched to the Neon 4cyl, I had already stopped caring by then. :D

wagoneer dana 44 axles in a comanche
jpnjim replied to comancheboy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You guys are both right. 79 & older Waggy axles have a passengers side axle drop (you can use a D300 to get the ft driveshaft on that side, but you're exhaust pipe will probably have to move first) 80-91 Waggy axles are drivers drop, with 60.5ish wide ft axles. The rear is more like 58". I'm running a 59.5" wide rear, without spacers, but 60", or wider would be better. -
Posi-lock "selectable locker"
jpnjim replied to Incommando's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It's called 'plow' when you turn the wheel, and continue going straight anyway. Loose surfaces would do it to my old MJ (Lockright ft, Spool rear). Loose crushed gravel parking lots were by far the worst, I'd cut the wheel all the way, and still have to bang a three pointer to turn around. I figured either the loose surface didn't offer enough traction to 'unlock' the lockright, or the gravel was loose enough that the spooled rear was able to push the Jeep straight, no matter how far you turned the wheel. Either way, it didn't do it with a Spool rear & Open ft, and when I swapped the rear Spool for a Full Detroit, I got my turning radius back. -
:agree: Them: "What do you drive" You: "A Comanche" Them: "Oh did you get the built in GPS/DVD package, back up camera's, and that 'self parallel parking' device?" You: "No, my Comanche is a 1987". Them "Oh.... Uh.... don't worry you'll get a new car someday... gottagobye"

as asked for: how to replace a headliner.
jpnjim replied to brdhntr's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
I'd like to see a pic of this. I tried positioning the 97-01 rear speakers on the ceiling of my MJ, but it ended up too close to my head. I did save the whole 01' headliner, but I hadn't though about re-shaping the back corners like that to fit the MJ. -
The AMC M20 was only on 1986 MJ's, so make sure they're looking up the right year. They could look up the full size Jeep application, or even the AMC car application to get part numbers: ALL full size AMC's: Matador, Ambassador, Rebel, Classic, etc got the AMC 20, regardless of which engine they used, other AMC's based their rear axle on which engine it got (AMC 7 9/16", AKA Dana 35 for 4's & 6cyl, Model 20 for V8's.

Jeep teases with idea of re-entry into pickup market
jpnjim replied to terrawombat's topic in The Pub
:agree: :clapping: -
Wow, two trucks with matching license plates - what are the odds of that…? I 'painted' in an extra '8' on the Grandpa Jeep just to keep things legit. ;)

If you haven't bought the tires yet, why not get KM2's in 255/85-16's? Mine tuck in nicely on factory 16x7's (5.25"bs), even with a slightly narrower than stock rear, they aren't that close to the rear 'frame': I don't really have any good pics that show the tires.

Jeep teases with idea of re-entry into pickup market
jpnjim replied to terrawombat's topic in The Pub
The thread is about Jeep building a production pickup truck. If we're willing to suspend belief long enough for that topic, the thought of selling them for $24,999 should be a walk in the park. You should be glad I didn't mention that I want my to run on Unicorn Tears & Puppy Farts. ;) :wavey: :D -
I'd just like to check out the 1950's air cooled v4 engine. If it wasn't sacrilege, I'd like one of the LWB versions with a Hayabusa engine, and Toy axles.

Make mine a V8/5spd with Rubi axles/T-case. Roll up windows, A/C and under $25K please. -
Project AMC-V8 / 5spd / AMC-20 MJ . . .
jpnjim replied to AMC-MJ's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Yes, with the 4.0L bellhousing. (same bellhousing fits the NV3550, and the AX-15) 2.5L Dakota's also had their own bellhousing, to fit these transmissions, the transmission would still work, but the bellhousing has the GM metric patturn (to fit the AMC/Jeep 150), and not the AMC V8/1972+ L6 pattern that you want. There was also a manual 6-speed trans used behind 4.0L's in the last few years of TJ's that would bolt right up to an AMC V8, but that's 4x4 only AFAIK (and it's said to be weaker than the AX, or NV's).
