Hidden Winch Design Proposal
terrawombat replied to 87Warrior's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I think just about every dimension, but one, is anywhere from 1/8" to 1/16" different than mine. What size are your holes? I used 1/2" diameter to allow some flexibility and movement, but they were pretty spot on and I feel confident I could reduce the size closer to the diameter of the bolts. -
My GF has a '06TJ with the six-speed. It's...uhh...interesting....

Does this help at all? Sideplate for a trailer hitch that fits on my SWB MJ.
-
That's what I thought. But in the group shot, he looks much, much older. At first glance, it looked like he had a gray goatee. Must be that collared shirt. whowey still looks angry, though.

How dare you take my thread off topic!

Hidden Winch Design Proposal

That is on the plate for this weekend. I really hope the driver and passenger side are the same with the driver only having more holes. My pasenger frame rail was pushed in by the previous owner quite abit on the outside. To be repaired by the body shop. I will be sure to share my findings. The three front bumper holes should be the same on the passenger and drivers side. I have not confirmed that the hole that is WAY back there are in the same location on both sides, but I would suspect that they are. -

Have you tweaked the bolt holes yet to make sure that they all line up? I'd be happy to check your measurements against mine, if you want. -
From left to right: Automan2164 89Eliminator WorldsFastestComanche Jakeman17 JeepCoMJ Pete M and Carly Mojomj Geonovast Whowey $500MJ Jerry (Tag-along) Will (Tag-along) Got that from the other thread this pic was posted in. It gets a little hairy around Mojomj and Genovast. I'm guessing Mojo is the one holding the brew, Genovast is in the back with the shades, whowey is the angry looking fellow in the gray t-shirt, $500MJ has the blue hat in the back (which is what throws me for a loop because I was under the impression $500MJ was around my age in his 20's).

Are you speaking about the yellow JK8 that they show in the video I linked to in my original post? Sounds exactly like what you described. The problem I have with that is it's a KIT. I want a production pickup truck, not some fiberglass kit you throw on a JK.

I did have a chuckle when he said that the Patriot from last year did VERY VERY well at Moab. z83G_q4rU3M I mean, I guess it did alright....for a Patriot...

I actually liked the utilitarian look they gave the Libby.

I think that's just a stock photo. -
Crunchwrap supreme. And now I remove my subscription from this thread...

Some neat Jeeps going to Moab for Easter. If the JK8 is Jeep's idea of their new pickup truck, I'm going to be very disappointed. But I want that JK with a Hemi and katzskin leather interior :D http://www.streetfire.net/video/moab-ea ... _term=img2

I would be interested, but will await the details before I make a full commitment. What kind of parts does he need?
-
It became more of a matter of saving material. Stretching a 1/4" plate all the way back to that lone, threaded bolt hole on the passenger side seemed wasteful to me. Not so bad on the drivers side since you can tie it into the steering box for extra reinforcement.
-
My passenger side mounts require that two new holes be drilled in the frame and sleeved.
-
Didn't have a piece of 1/4" plate long enough for it so I omitted that hole for now. I have a design that incorporates it and once I can get some more 1/4" plate, I'll throw it on there. I've done Finite Element calculations on the plate with and without that additional hole and the difference in strength isn't as significant as you might think.

According to the M8000 manual, that is one of two ways that the winch is designed to be mounted. -
I'm in the middle of developing a set of plates that will serve a dual purpose - frame reinforcement around the steering box and front tow recovery points. It kind of combines the idea of the C-ROK plate and $500MJ's front tow brackets. It would be made from either 3/16" or 1/4" steel plate. There would be a similar plate on the passenger side and a piece of square box tube welded between both plates and I'm looking into the idea of mounting a receiver hitch behind the license plate and using a YJ-style spring-loaded flip down to hide the receiver. Only picture I have so far. I ran out of material and haven't been able to get to my local metal supplier to get more to finish the prototyping. Working a 9-5 is no fun.

Hoses and vacuum lines. Where can I get them?
terrawombat replied to kickstarted's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Depending on how much money you want to spend and how original you want to make it, these are available, as well: Pricey, though: http://www.teamgrandwagoneer.com/cgi-bi ... 0&catid=95 -
That deal isn't too bad if the drivetrain is in pretty good shape and the rust is limited to the bottom of the doors. Looks like you got some extras with it, too, like the rollbar, which I still want to take off your hands, just don't know when I can get it.

Saw this up on Craigslist for a month or so. His price started around $3500. What'd you wind up getting it for, if you don't mind me asking?

Use your two hours of beer drinking time to work on the MJ :D

Wear layers. I'm sure the winters get much colder than here in NJ, but I was out in my shop all winter without any heat, but I invested in some good thermal underwear a while back and it has been worth every penny. Got it from Eastern Mountain Sports and it's generally used for outdoor winter activities. I got the heaviest stuff they had. I also use a radiant propane heater and will use it to warm my hands and body up every 15 minutes or so, but it got pretty expensive filling that tank up every couple weeks or so. Problem is, with a REAL job, you won't have the time to come home and work on that CRD MJ. I'm in this position now. I have a 40-hour/week job and a steady income, but no time to do the things I want to do. Get home around 6PM, eat dinner, feed dog, and I'm lucky to get down to my shop by 7. Get a couple hours of work in there and then head back home to shower, sleep, and wake up for work the next day. I don't really enjoy my job all that much either. I have a very loose grasp on the concepts that my company specializes in and I never really contribute any good ideas to improve upon existing designs of the products we engineer. I get very disinterested in the work and am constantly put into uncomfortable situations with clients where I cannot come up with the right answer because I don't have the knowledge or experience, but because my company is so small and our resources are stretched so thin, I'm forced to do things and pretend like I know what I'm doing. I'm currently dithering quite a bit on voluntarily leaving my job to pursue a different career path. One thing I have found is that if I truly enjoy doing something (design and prototyping, for example), I'll put in 110% and the end result is something that I'm proud of. I don't get that satisfaction whatsoever with my current job. I took it because I was running out of money and they made me a decent offer, but I knew from the very beginning that I wasn't going to be a good fit.
