power steering pitman and reservoir questions
mjtjnj replied to mjtjnj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
At least I know how to drive. Now that's funny. Why don't you spend some of that money and get yourself a decent place to work on your trucks? PS I sold you the spare tire winch a couple of months back, so always a good idea to alienate people who have worked with you in the past. :dunce: Uploaded with ImageShack.us -
power steering pitman and reservoir questions
mjtjnj replied to mjtjnj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Boots - that's what I meant, thanks. I got it on there good enough to take it on the short ride to get the socket and crank it down. 4359 - you can't be too smart and not be able to spell, especially since the word was already spellled right earlier in the thread You know who else is dumb and makes "a lot of money?" The Kardashians. I'd rather ask dumb questions. Thanks for being the dumb question police, must be a busy job here. -
power steering pitman and reservoir questions
mjtjnj replied to mjtjnj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
are you just being a jackass in your last two posts? If you could read, I didn't end up with extra parts, the new part had extra pieces with it, which I figured out. Thanks for wasting my time, but more unbelievably, yours. And what's a resivor? I don't make my living working on "rigs," but I sure as hell know how to spell. -
Just swapped the old leaky steering box for one off a 96 wj. I hate ps fluid. Anyway, my old ressie cracked and I got a new one from crown auto delivered today. There are two little plastic parts seperately floating around the box. I don't know if they are needed for the mj/xj application. Anyone know? Secondly, I don't have a 1 1/16th" socket for the pitman arm nut. Got it off with an adjustable, how can I torque this back down sufficiently? Thanks! Tom

Got it for free, parted it out (was going to make flatbed). Guy bought it to finish the project. Seemed like a good guy, didn't want to junk a very clean shell. 2WD shortbed 4cyl ax5 no a/c, no carpet, no lighter! did have full gauge cluster, however! 197K

I'm glad this came up now, because I was just shopping online (autozone.com, rockauto.com) and they seem to make no distinction between the ZJ and XJ/MJ boxes. Rockauto has a-1 Cardone part # 277570, which it lists specifically for 96-98 WJ. Right under it, they have 277582, which lists 96-98 XJ and ZJ, and 97 TJ. Can you imagine having a v8 Grand Cherokee, with 12.7:1 steering, and buying one of these slushboxes and wondering why your steering is so loose? :fs1: I might take a chance on the former number, since RockAuto is pretty good on returns. They have a pretty hefty core charge of $150... Tom

Agree with eagle. Autozone or similar stores sell bottles of friction modifiers, cheaper than the dealer, the names are escaping me at the moment.

Dude, just cut some steel up, drill some holes, and make brackets; I did this, and I cut some rubber "gaskets" to resemble original, and it's rock solid. Also use SS hardware.

It's time for some new shoes. I've had the BFG AT's on my truck (31's) for a few years now, and they wore nice and even. They weren't super in light snow, but otherwise I was very happy with them. Thinking of going to 32's and I thought MT tires would look cool -- that might not be the best idea for a truck that sees a fair amount of interstate time. I'll probably go back with BFG, but I'd love some input. I'm lifted 3-3.5 inches, have OME front springs and shocks, looking to go MT from add-a-leaf out back eventually. Almost never offroad, around town and highway split 50-50. You could go nuts reading reviews on Tire Rack.com -- every tire has a ton of both GREAT and TERRIBLE reviews. What do you all think? :wrench: Tom

Intermittent steering creak?
mjtjnj replied to lexluthier72's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
OK, doing this from memory. Get under the hood on the driver's side. Follow the steering shaft towards the front of the truck. There will be a U joint 2/3 of the way down, that has a bolt holding it together....make sure that's tight. Where the shaft slides onto the steering box, there's a collar there, with a bolt in it...make sure that's snug, too. It may vary from my description, but generally make sure the shaft and components look ok. -

By the way, if you can feel it in the steering, check the steering shaft, make sure the collar is tight on there, and that it's not slipping/stripped. -

I've been struggling with this too, so let me give you my two cents worth. Had a steering clunk, a loud one, for years, when turning while still or at low speeds. Unrelated to that, I've replaced all the ball joints, tie rod, TRE's, steering damper for good maintenance, and the shocks/springs for lift. This past weekend, I finally replaced the adjustable track bar with TRE fitting with a new IRO trackbar and the drop-mount, which eliminates the noisy TRE, which wears out and binds pretty quickly, I found. HOWEVER, I still have a very slight low-speed clunk. Much better than the big clunk from before :fs1: . My next front end project is a ZJ steering box. I'm curious to see if the unibody is cracked where the steering box mounts up. We'll see. If not, I may be replacing the control arms, or at least the bushings. -

2.5L engine replacement options
mjtjnj replied to Timmmmmy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I had an 87 with the 2.5/AW4 and 4.56's. It was a fairly rare bird, but they're out there. I had my 2.5 rebuilt .030 over and used a set of Yella Terra roller rockers to give me a little more lift. Electric fan, cone air intake, and it goes fine. No downshifting on hills on the highway, no problems getting going at all. Biggest difference is when you try to haul something. Though recently I towed another MJ on a tow dolly straight up a gravel hill on a guy's property. First time I'd really used 4WD Lo....I felt like I had a V8 pulling up that hill! OP: Don't listen to anyone who tells you the 2.5L isn't worth it. It's a damn fine engine; if you don't want to go through the extra expense and time of shoe-horning a 4.0L in, it's the easiest way to go.. Tom -
That's what I want to do. So did you keep the 88 gear or the 94 gear? I guess that's what I'm asking. Thanks Tom :help:

My stock TC has been making noise for years, when I had the engine rebuilt and swapped in the newer ax-5, I had a guy take a look inside and he could find absolutely nothing wrong with it. But it's noisy. I found a cheap low mileage NP231 from a 91 or 92 wrangler, with the electric speed sensor. I've heard I can just swap my manual parts over to the newer case, and use my old cable. Is that true? Do I swap the gear over too? I need to get a 37 tooth, anyway, just don't know whether to get the long or short style. Thanks in advance! Tom

Saw this the other day: http://cnj.craigslist.org/pts/2558938973.html PS - there you go with the sanctimoniousness again. :fs2:

Some guy online cut them open and ran all kinds of tests on them. Chrysler didn't do very well...I always use Wix.
-
going in the replacement np231 I'm putting in, out of a 91 YJ. Still would be the short style, even though electronic speedo, correct? Thanks Tom
-
Thanks Jim, I will get an extra hand and do that! No, the tailgate is in good condition! Tom
-
Need a good replacement. Got this MJ project, and the spline is stripped off the shaft ...someone was manhandling this thing trying to push it around! Thanks Tom
-
Ok, so the latest mj I've picked up sat for quite sometime. Tailgate doesn't bulge when I pull the handle. How can I jimmy this open? Thinking about a flatbed project, so going to sell off the shortbox, tailgate, and lights. Thanks Tom
