Hey guys this might be a little off topic sorry about this. i'm having trouble deciding on some new tires for my lifted xj. the xj is used as a d/d, for camping, at off road parks, and mostly on old logging trails. At first i was looking at the bfg km2's, and the pro comp x-terrains and now ive been leaning towards the bfg all-terrains. I need some help with choosing my tires. whatever the tire they will be on cragar soft 8's 15 x 8 with 4" of back spacing. and for tire size i'm thinking 32x 11.50. any advice would be great, thanks guys - cody

How to find spot welds in rusted metal?
codybutz replied to Rymanrph's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I saved mine by, using a wire wheel on a drill and running up and down the flanges of that channel. a couple passes revealed where the spot welds were. you could probably get away with just cutting the floorboard out with that channel attached and then just drill out the spot welds and you'd have to just butt weld the channel back together after you replaced the floorboard. -
looks like some kinda of preexisting heavy machinery suspension. and that diesel sounds purdy nice.

check out Quigley motor company for 4x4 vans. my first car was a 94 astro ext. 220,000 miles before the tranny and rear end took a dump. i wish i still had it, i often played with the idea of putting a lift and a blazer drive train under it.

So i've been seeing alot of xjs in the JY's since cfc. I was wondering what exactly is done to them to make the motors no good. ive seen so many newer body style ones that. it would probably be cheaper in the long run to just buy a whole newer body xj to swap parts to an mj. i've heard they ruin the motors, but what exactly is done to them? i saw a near flawless 00' the other day the only thing missing was rims and tires but it had "CFC" written in paint marker all over the engine and glass.

I'm going to look at a xj. it would be a dd for my girl that has no car this winter. its a 1998 4 door 4x4 with 56,000 original miles on the clock. it has an auto trans, here is the catch tho the guy said it has no reverse. he said his mechanic said something about it being a like a $400 job for him to fix, maybe a solenoid he was saying. now here is my question would this be something to go look at and what else should i look for? is this a sign of bigger problems? if i were to buy the jeep i have no problem dropping the trans and fixing what ever it would be. but i just don't wanna buy it fix that and then have that be the start of many more head aches. the guy is only asking like 1600 for it. is this worth it and what else should i look for? any help would be great thanks guys. - cody I know this is a mj site, but it also seems to be more helpful then some of the other forums i belong to. thanx again guys.

I know the front end body panels are just a bolt on. but i was wondering more about the engine, trans, transfer case, axles, dash and all that. i know the rear spring perches will have to be moved but is that it?

ya i see what i did wrong with the pictures, thanks guys. i'll get my act together next time haha. so i'm thinking i found a 98 xj classic donor for $500. this would allow me to do the front end swap along with the whole drive train from the xj. and it has buckets and the nice 5 spoke rims, along with other odds and ends i would need to finish my project. so my question is how hard is it to completely swap the drive train into my mj? all the wiring and the computers should be in the xj so wouldnt it be as simple as swapping all the parts?

ya there is some rust on the bottom of edge of the bed but its not swiss cheese yet, its just a bit pitted. i'm not sure how i'm going to fix it yet. i like how people have cut off up to the first body line right behind the rear wheels that doesnt look that bad. then there are some dents and dings but i'm gunna pull those all out and fill them in with lead. for wheels i'm thinking probably some black steelies.

So i've kinda been lurking around here for a while and just got some pictures of my truck that i have been working on. kinda bad cell phone pics. sorry about that. so here's the run down. its an 87' 4.0, 5 speed, 4x4,d30 F and d35 R, np231, long bed with 130,000 miles on the clock. I got it last winter for $800 off of craigslist. it looked like it was sitting for a while. when i went to look at it i drove it around the block, knew i wanted it, paid the kid and jumped on the interstate to head back home. So far i have replaced both driver and pass. side floorboards. the exhaust from the cat back. the pass side fender, grill, headlight bezels, header panel, pass door. and then i scored a slider from somebody on the CC and had that put in. i'm in the middle of sanding her down for a paint job. as she sits now she is part oem red and part macco red, with some random white and primer body panels. i can't decide if i'm gunna paint her red or turn her white or go all out and spray her in that new greenish color the new wranglers come in. after i just put her front end all back together i'm on the fence on doing the newer body style front end. since my xj has a RE 4.5 kit and i'm in love with it, more then likely the MJ will get the RE 5.5 kit unless i find something that everybody seems to think is better. so this is where she stands white now. any input would be great guys. ok now for some pictures. - cody hope this worked...

what does that look like and i'll tell you

ok thanx. is there anything else i should look for on this model? somebody already mangled the rear end and i can't even tell what it was or is.

this might be a little off topic but its kinda quick question move it if you like. there is an early body style xj in the junk yard by me and it has the stock front and rear skid plates. it looks like it was a government truck with all the antennas and no interior. I was wondering how rare are these skid plates and are they worth going back to get? would they fit on my 01 xj. and or my 87 mj? it also has the front tow hooks with tie in brackets. are these things worth the trip back? thanx guys - cody

what fertilizer do you use to grow such nice rows of jeep. :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

so does anybody remember the old half-tracks from ww2 ?..... what if you put one of those and an MJ ( rust free, 97+ front end conversion, 4.7 stroker ) in a box and forced them to mate before you let them out again........

I think this would be the best place for this post but if not move it at your will. I no longer have a compressor in the garage, so using a DA sander is not an option. I guess my question is; has anybody found an electric sander that they have used and liked for body work? I know that the DA, dual action sander moves in two directions, but would an ordinary palm sander do the job? I can't seem to find a DA that is electric, I thought I saw one a while ago, but I can't remember where or if I just made that all up in my head. Thanx. - Cody

with the tape you lay for your stripes and masking windows etc. make sure when you peel it off make sure to pull it over itself and to take your time, if you just rip it off and the paint is still tacky it will come off with the tape. prep. is key, get yourself a good surface cleaner and a tack clothe to wipe all the dust off right before you spray. always spray to a wet edge, when you practice spraying on an extra fender, make sure to take note of how your gun and air pressure is set up, ever gun and compressor combo will spray different. i know i'm forgettin other helpful tips but, those are the ones that came to me right away

as asked for: how to replace a headliner.
codybutz replied to brdhntr's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
you might be better off just going to a JY and pulling one out of an xj and then cutting it to length. i only say this because you might not be able to get the contour with carboard. just my thought, take it for what its worth. -
HO valve cover on a Renix 4.0 UPDATE
codybutz replied to mjeff87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I hate to bump this thread but but when it comes to motor work i need things really planned out and dumbed down. could somebody give me a parts list and kinda of a detailed play by play for doing this. i think i could almost ring out a whole quart of oil from my 87' 5 speed 4.0's air filter. thanx in advance guys. - cody
