Thanks for the tips. In my past world (Maximas), there was a natural resting position for each gauge, and you ALWAYS removed AND installed needles by rotating counter-clockwise, with a gentle lifting motion to remove and a gentle pressing motion to install. You sinply turned them until you reached the resting point and then (if necessary, re-installed the posts and) closed them up. When you started the car, they were properly calibrated. No such luck here, I suppose.

I bought a 3/4 gauge set (amp/oil press, temp, and a large fuel gauge/speedo) with the cutout for my PRND21 indicator. When it arrived, the fuel needle was off at the post. Rather than deal with sending it back or being a pain to the seller, I want to try to reattach the needle. I don't know the natural "resting" position is for the needle after I re-attach it. Can anyone tell me the proper resting position? Also, any tips on re-attaching the needles without damaging the springs behind the face?

1-2" Lift and upgrade to new shocks. Advice?
phenryiv1 replied to phenryiv1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If I need new shocks now, but don't have the money to actually lift it just yet, ca I use the ones that you recommend for 2-3" and then add the lift later? -
MJ Wheel Stance WITH PICS WAHOO!
phenryiv1 replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
No pics, but I did some research and found that if you search for "jeep wheel spacers centric " on eBay, you do get several listings for 1.25" and 1.5" hubcentric 5 on 4.5" spacers with grade 8 hardware. -
MJ Wheel Stance WITH PICS WAHOO!
phenryiv1 replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The WHS-002 Spidertrax 1.25" spacers finally arrived and I slapped them on. Excellent product. They are hubcentric and fit perfectly. They even come with Locktite. I was a bit concerned about the spacer stud length because I had to install longer studs in my axels before to make up for the rear disk brake backing plate thickness, but the spacer studs are actually 1/4" longer and gave me twice the lug nut engagement that I had before. My rear wheels are now moved out almost the same in the flare as the front; would have 1.50" spacers to make it perfect, but these will do. Will take some pics tomorrow if it ever stops raining here. Many thanks to SW2 for his assistance. Did you ever get any pictures? I spoke with a buddy who had (sorry, HAD- he sold it last week) an XJ and he ordered a set of spacers on eBay that were identical to the spidertrax except for not being blue. I will try to get the info. He also had a set of spidertrax, and said that the sets were functionally identical. -
How does one calculate the proper length for their shocks? Is it simply the stock extended length plus the height of the lift = the new extended length needed?

1-2" Lift and upgrade to new shocks. Advice?
phenryiv1 replied to phenryiv1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Quick bump: What do I need to do to find the shock model/part numbers that are correct for a 0-3" lift? -
Yeah, my next project is to UN-stick most of them (on the maxima board) and put all of the links to those massive posts in one thread. I just think that some really frequently asked questions can have quick-reference posts where people can build basic knowledge, then use that to ask more educated (and specific) questions. A noobie (like me) won't have those threads saved like you will, and will not even know where to start. Just my opinion.

1-2" Lift and upgrade to new shocks. Advice?
phenryiv1 replied to phenryiv1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I don't want to imply that I feel that there is anything wrong with coil spacers- jut that if all other factors are equal, I would prefer to go with replacement coils. I went today to get my new wheels and tires (sweet!) and the guy has an XJ with a 3" coil in front with a 1" spacer and a 3" AAL and 2" shackles in the rear. He is replacing it all with new stuff, and offered the coils, AAL, and shackle to me for next to nothing. I need to check on the rear stuff fitting, but the fronts are a definate "go" for me. If that all fails, I still may do shackles or maybe a rear AAL. I just need to fit 30 x 9.50 on 15 x 8 Jeep wheels from a TJ. -
Is there a way to have links on comancheclub open in a new window instead of redirecting the current browser window to the link? I know that I could right-click, but I forget to do so, as very few forum websites use same-window linking. Just a thought...

I know that they are not a cure-all, but some really easy things can be in the stickies and still be pretty usefull. Look at how they can be both forces of good AND evil... http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generation ... 95-1999-6/ I moderate that forum, and I am pretty confident that through the search feature, 95% of questions about that model of vehicle (95-99 Missan Maxima) can be answered somewhere in those sticky threads...but finding the info can be a challenge, even with a robust search function. The info is there, but we got int SO MUCH info that it is almost too big to use. And it is really tough to maintain! Anyway, my thoughts on having one here are to limit it to some basic stuff: How large of a tire can I fit at stock height? What is the stock bolt pattern for wheels? WTF do I do about this floor rot?!? Can I fit bucket seats/full console in my MJ? (include links to the How-to threads) How can I fix my faulty interior lights? (Include link to the replacement thread, the cleaning the stock lights thread, and the add XJ underdash lights threads) Can I replace my dash cluster with full or 3/4 gauges? (You get the picture on the links) What size are the stock speakers? What sizes can I fit in the stock locations? How can I run wiring from the engine compartment into the cabin? I can't think of many more, mostly because I am new here as well, though I am not at all new to Jeeps. Point is, FAQs would help a lot of people, but require a lot of work to maintain. Look at what mess my FAQs have become- and I spent over a full week wasting time at work cleaning them up in 2007, and have maintained them monthly.

Putting Floors in that rusty MJ or XJ
phenryiv1 replied to Pollockzrodz's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
Did you POR-15 inside the frame rail? I see from the picture that it was in good shape, but did you do anything to keep it that way? Also, what (if anything) did you do on the outside (underside) to protect the new metal? -
I DID do a search...I am sure that someone will tell me that this has been covered 47,000 times before- and it probably has. My 88 4x4 LB is rolling around on dead shocks (still original from when the truck was new), and while I go through the time and expense of replacing the shocks, I might as well add an inch or so in height, since I am going to a 30" tire very soon. I did some searches on budget boosts or budget lifts and got pretty much nowhere. My first question is this: No matter what method of lifting I choose, how do I choose a shock length that is appropriate for the new springs? Front: First, I would like to avoid coil spacers, if possible. That being said, I have seen a lot of XJ owners run ZJ V8 front coils on the front of the Cherokee to get about 1-1.5" of lift. This is slightly more than XJ UpCountry/Off Road springs, and I think that I will be fine at 1-1.5" over stock. Will these springs have a similar effect on an MJ? Rear: I have seen the use of shackles (I guess stock S-10 shackles) to add an inch or so. I cannot recall this exactly. Am I recalling correctly? I would also consider using some form of an AAL, which from what I have read is fine, but a full-length AAL is recommended. Is there a leaf from another vehicle that I might be able to grab and add to the MJ pack to give me about 1-1.5 inches? Will I need to cut off the eyes to do this? Or should I just buy an off-of-the-shelf AAL from a known manufacturer? Thanks in advance for the help. I hope to make the results of this into a sort of FAQ or How-to, to assist other n00bies such as myself.

Blackjack is basically roofing tar or adhesive in a tube that is applied with a caulking gun. It makes a huge mess if you don't know how to use it right. I have used it in roofing to seal around flashing and it is a pain to get off of skin, and it is a real pain if you have a cheap caulking gun. As for other uses, I have also used it as a driveway sealer after running my dog's invisible fence. It does harden, but it takes about 24-48 hours to fully cure. If surfaces are properly prepped and it is properly applied, it can result in a very good seal. If that is what people are calling seam sealer, then I am comfortable working with it and using riveted and/or screwed patches, but I still may look into the costs of having the floor cut and a new pan welded in place.

Changing gauges in 89 MJ, auto on column

Changing gauges in 89 MJ, auto on column
phenryiv1 replied to Shane's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Didn't you ask this same question like last week? If you do not like the idea of the shift indicator sitting on the column, suggest you invest in a Dremel tool and carefully hack a slot to mount your existing indicator, then figure out a way to mount it in the new cluster as there are no mounting posts provided in the full gauge clusters. Good luck! That was me that asked it last week. -
Whats the largest tire I can Run stock 89 mj
phenryiv1 replied to sinkrun's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
No doubt. I still haven't figured out why the search is so hinky. I've tried adjusting the settings with no luck. Maybe the next update will fix the software, Besides, if anyone gets tired of responding to common questions, they don't have to respond. Everyone's situation is different and I prefer members to ask their questions so that the answers can be tailored to the details at hand. Like I said, I am no computer guy, but I do moderate a board (www.maxima.org) with about 80K members, and we run vBulletin, which has an integrated search feature that is in the bar at the top of each subforum (once you are in the subforum, that is). It offers the option to "search this forum" and appears when you hover a cursor over the "search this forum" button. jeepsunilimited.com has the same feature. I don't know the cost of vBulletin, so that may be a reason to not switch over, but I figured I'd pass it on. Back to the topic at hand, I don't mind any new thread or question in the forum I moderate, so long as the answer is not in the FAQ sticky threads and is not already answered in the first page or two of current topics. -
Good find. Now you can mail me your sweet cupholder!
