  1. Made some progress over the weekend. It now moves under it's own power! So far I have replaced the radiator, water pump, thermostat, most of the cooling system hoses. Put in a new battery, used steering column, installed a new distributor gasket, and removed the rat nest from the air box. Pile of old parts is growing My other Jeep being used as a table for the most important tools.
  2. The column in my '86 MJ with manual transmission is bad. A friend gave me a tilt column out of a late '80s XJ. The XJ column is out of an automatic with a floor shifter. This means the column has the shift interlock cable hook-up instead of the lever to lock the ignition. I've read that the interlock can be bypassed but couldn't really find any details on how it is done. If anyone has done this could you let me know how?
  3. From what I found doing a little research they had two shades of red for the early MJs, Garnet and Cordovan. I think Garnet is red but Cordovan is more of a dark red/burgandy. So are both interiors in the pictures above Garnet? Where can you find the color codes on MJs?
  4. Keep in mind the MJ in the first set spent years sitting out in the sun and the interior is pretty faded. Plus the first set was taken during the day in the sun and the second set was taken in the dark.

  6. My MJ has red interior. How many shades of red interior were used in '86? Look at the two sets of pics below and let me know if you think they are the same color. They are both form '86 MJs. First set
  7. Krylon Fusion works well on the fender flares. Did you use the Valspar tractor paint?
  8. I don't know if i'd call it clean. The paint on the hood and roof is peeling and the interior needs a good bit of work. But the suspension and axles need very little. Any chance I might find a red dash and trim to replace mine? I haven't seen a lot of the red interiors.
  9. I installed a new radiator, hoses, and battery. But it looks like the water pump is shot.
  10. Got it home last weekend.

    Stock Shackles

I plan to do that when I go up a size in tires. But for now I have too much lift in the back. I could fit a basketball between the rear tire and fender flare.

    Stock Shackles

I need some stock shackles. The extended ones I have now are causing my MJ to sit too high in the rear.
  13. Thanks, I thought I read you were running 35s in an earlier post. I plan to run a doubler so off- road I should be low enough.
  14. How are the 35s with the 4.88 gears? I have the same drivetrain, (2.5l, AX4, 4.88 gears), and want to go with 35s.
  15. I want to add power steering to my '86 MJ with a 2.5l. It has the v-belts not the serpentine.
  16. 231 is stronger. Plus I plan to do a doubler down the road. My MJ will mostly be a trail rig.
  17. Doh, that's what I meant.
  18. I went ahead and got the full coverage since it wasn't a big difference in price. NADA on the MJ is around $3000.
  19. Crap, I just ordered from them yesterday.
  20. I just got a quote for $244 a year for liability only, or $360 for full coverage. Would you even bother with full coverage for an '86 model?
  21. So the Peugeot has a 21 spine NP207? That will help finding one. Four cylinder manual XJs are rare around here.
  22. Did the swap back to the stock style radiator help your cooling issues?
  23. I apologize in advance if this topic has already been beat to death. I searched but couldn't find any clear answers. I have am '86 MJ with a AX4 and a NP207. I would like to swap the NP207 for a NP231. From what I have read my NP207 should have a 21 spline input shaft since it's mated to an AX4. So I will need a NP231 with a 21 spline input. These should be found on XJs, MJs, and YJs made after '86 with an AX5. I know the front output is different between the NP207 and NP231 so I will need an '87 and up XJ front driveshaft. I also read the shifter is different so i'll need a shifter from a XJ or MJ with a NP231. Am I missing anything? Is the YJ and XJ/MJ NP 231 the same?
  24. If I remember correctly i'm running Motive gears in my TJ. They seem to be holding up well.
  25. I bought an '86 last Saturday. The previous owner built it up pretty nice then let it sit for several years. Longbed, 4x4, 2.5l, 4 speed. The good: TJ Dana 30 front with Lockright and 4.88 gears Ford 8.8 rear with Detroit, disk brakes, and 4.88 gears 4 inch lift Ramsey 8000 winch Custom front and rear bumpers Tool box full of trail spares and recovery gear Engine was rebuilt(before it sat for years) The bad: Interior is rough Rust hole in drivers floorboard Hood has surface rust Radiator is bad (fixed) Has oil leak around distributer (fixed) No keys (fixed) No power steering I got a great deal on it. It will be used as my primary wheeler and for hauling stuff around town. I've had 2 XJs, a CJ5, a CJ7, and currently have a TJ. But I really don't know a lot about the MJs. So i'm sure i'll have a lot of questions. Sorry, about the crappy pic. We picked it up and off loaded it in my friends barn until I can get a radiator and key. It's the red one on the left.
