Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving! The next part to our Mojave Trail video comes out today at 8:30 PST if you're sitting around digesting still. 😉 Here's a preview of some of the things we saw.

I ran into this on on Facebook. I always thought this might be a cool way to improve interior space. I like it!

Thanks for the help OHM, it wasn't easy finding out how the system was supposed to work. In the end, I never could find anything wrong, all connection were good and clean, the ground was good and no amount of wiggling things caused a problem. I swapped in a US made Walbro pump hoping that the aftermarket pump just wasn't working sometimes. I did add an extra ground at the pump. In the event that it malfunctions again, I rigged up a plug that plugs into my auxiliary plug for my fridge and plugs into the fuel pump. I tested it and it works, so I won't get stranded if it does happen again.

Thanks for watching! Unfortunately, no camera seems to work well for everything. For quite a while, Heather primarily used her Google Pixel 6 Pro. It does pretty darn good. Lately, she's also been using a DJI Action 4, the Insta 360 X2 and the Panasonic Lumix. The 360 gets shots that would otherwise be impossible, but is a pain to edit. She really only uses the Panasonic for further away shots, tripod stuff or photos as it's stabilization isn't very good. Multiple cameras definitely make it much more difficult to edit the videos. She's got a few torpedo microphones and a couple wireless ones that we probably should use more. Just Amazon stuff.

The second video is out. We visited historic cabins, a huge lave tube and an abandoned cinder mine. It was pretty awesome.

Pretty sure that I broke at least one, maybe two of those stock knobs in my & the Comanche's younger days. I remember the white plastic breaking out. The Pueguoet didn't survive the wrath of my younger days either, (my dad bought the MJ when I was 17, I bought it from him when I was 20). Thanks for the trip down memory lane. 😂 I've been unable to kill the aluminum Hurst knob or the AX15 in all of the years since. I did buy a new AX15 from Advance Adapters a few years ago, just because I had it out and mine was high mileage, but it still worked fine.

Thanks!

Thanks. That makes it sound like it has to be a problem with the pump or wiring since I wasn't getting fuel prime or fuel during cranking. It seems unlikely that both separate circuits would malfunction at the same time. What was really throwing me for a loop was the time that was sprayed brake clean in the intake and then it fired up. It must have just been a coincidence, but had me thinking that perhaps just the starter cranking circuit wasn't working, but I never heard it prime either. I have noticed that it only primes twice in a row though. I wonder if there is a delay with the prime cycle or f the vehicle was recently shutoff? Guess I'll play some more tonight.

Thanks OHM, I was hoping you'd chime in. Any idea where power comes from for the 2 or 3 second prime cycle?
-
That's the only connector that I know of that I have not checked. I'll put it on tonight's to do list. Intermittent problems are the worst.

Sorry, it's the 89 XJ again, always the XJ 😒. Strangely the XJ has half the miles of the MJ and spent it's life in the high desert VS the coast and yet it always seems to have a new weird electrical problem. The MJ never does, (knock on wood). 89 4.0 AT. I've been reading through old posts trying to figure out how the fuel pump is powered at various times. Anybody know how the prime cycle is powered? During the start cycle I believe it's powered by the starter relay and then switches to the PCM? Here's the deal. The pump is a Delphi, about a year old. Grounds cleaned and a few extras added. I did add an additional fuel pump ground yesterday, even though it ohmed out fine at the FP connector. The ballast resistor was removed before any of this started, or it never had one, I don't remember. Three times over the last year, it has failed to start. Cranks over, but no fuel. It never happens at home and never stays broken, so I'm trying to figure out the system so that I know where to start. Once I gave it shot of brake cleaner into the intake and it fired up and then was fine. Perhaps a coincidence, I don't know. The other times, it just went back to normal after a few minutes. Does anyone know where the power for the prime function comes from? PCM? What isn't making sense is that if the power in start mode comes from the starter relay and the prime mode comes from the PCM that neither one seemed to be working, but once it started on the brake cleaner, the PCM was powering the pump? Or maybe it just "fixed itself" at that moment? When I checked today, there was just under 12 volts to the pump during the prime function. When I removed the FP relay, it still started until you moved the key to the run position, then died like expected. It has never been an issue while driving, always happens during a start. Maybe the pump is just junk and doesn't want to start at times? Sorry for the long post, lots of information to divulge.

Steering shaft rebuild, column to box
Htchevyii replied to eaglescout526's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I bought a Crown one a few years ago and it's been fine. My OEM one broke and would slip without turning the steering box. Luckily it was at low speed, very scary. -
Thanks for the words and for watching! We're only at 1739 subscribers currently. We haven't even came close to paying for the camera gear from YouTube proceeds at this point. Sadly, our vintage trailer, Gambler 500, technical and product review videos have usually done better than the Jeep overland ones. At this point, Heather is still enjoying making the videos, if that changes, we will still go on the trips, but you might get stuck with pictures. Thanks again for your support!

Thanks! It was a fun trip. I was a little worried about tiring out my parents whom are in their 70's, but the did great and enjoyed the trip.

Thanks! It was a long, but amazing trip. We took the scenic route there, it was almost 20 hours of driving just to get there.

We survived another huge trip in the Comanche. Other than a cracked exhaust pipe, the trip was trouble free. We took back roads as much as possible from N CA to Mojave. If you like the video, please give a like and comment and consider watching another of our videos. It's supposed to help the YouTube algorithm. There is much more cool stuff to come in future videos. It's not shown in the video, but we drove by Pyramid Lake and camped near Fallon. Breakfast at the historic Middlegate Station, then we were off to the International Car Forrest in Goldfield NV. The next night was spent at the Goldpoint Ghost town, then we made it to Afton Canyon for the start of the trail. My parents accompanied us on this trip in their 2020 JL towing a Sherpa off road trailer.

Mine have usually had the metal clip on both sides. You can see where it attaches. I think it's just there to hole the liner in position until the trim is installed. If you need to recover it, this might help.

Aftermarket Fender Quality/Fitment?
Htchevyii replied to big66440's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I used this on on the '89 XJ. It was pretty good, but has a spot in the front where it meets the header panel that is the incorrect angle. Nowhere near as big of a POS as the Crown header panel that I returned. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B076CHYMKC?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title -
So, my aftermarket intermediate pipe cracked at the corrugated looking bend on our last 2200 mile adventure. I was lucky to find a shop in Barstow to repair it for us after I clamped a chili can over it. I'm looking for a higher quality replacement. I've considered the 91+ since it's more readily available, but my manifold is pretty new and not cracked yet, so I don't really want to change it and deal with the EGR stuff. I found this one that Magnaflow sells, but naturally it's on BO. Has anyone else found anything besides the cheap aftermarket ones? I think that I will also add some better hangers and a flex joint to the system while I'm at it.
