  1. Unimog?
  2. Happy holidays everyone!
  3. When i tried this I cut up a thick plastic bag and wrapped it over the rear shaft output hole and secured it with elastic bands. When the experiment was complete there was a cup full of t-case oil in the bag. My drive way is very steep so i expect the oil poured out going up that. You should be fine if you don't go up any steep hills and take it easy.
  4. I reckon there's a film vehicle supply company out there that has a stock of J10's, XJ's and the odd MJ because I'm always seeing them cast in the post apocalypse movies. There's a J series truck sitting noticeably in the background of the scenes of Walking Dead I just saw.
  5. Sweet rig! Even has a crapper, I'm jealous, I have to go in the bushes :D
  6. I had same issue with the head lights + a nasty smell of burning electrics when miles from home which had me worried, on inspection of the light switch discovered it had burned out. Easy to test and replace if that's the problem although wriggling around under the dash isn't so much fun!
  7. Stuff an old cushion behind the back of the seat, instant head rest, no fabrication required :)
  8. +1 CPS It seems to be the main culprit in random go/no go symptoms. I had the same, replaced the CPS and that cured it immediately. It's a bugger to get at tho!
  9. Any chance you could post a bit of info on the location of the relay harness etc? That would be sweet :)
  10. But unstoppable, even in standard trim
  11. Can ya tell us more about the V-dub? Must be a hoot on the trails!
  12. I bought an electric xj fan for peanuts at the wreckers and wired it through a fuse + in cab toggle switch. Works great. Hasn't overheated on hot slow trails since, even when the radiator still leaked (closed system). I did once forget to turn it off and flattened the battery though (need to add an idiot light). If it's not to late already that would be a good way to go to see if an extra fan will help you before beating your wallet on expensive new goodies :wrench:
  13. And there was light! After pulling it apart and testing it turned out the main light switch was fried. Water had got into the connector block behind the LH head lamp. Not sure if that was the cause or just age and wear in the switch.
  14. Muchos thanks! :) guess what I'll be doing this weekend
  15. Thanks for the info sir  So I do need to pull the column apart! Darn! :wrench: edit: So I was thinking "Why did the switch fail?" and then I remembered I've got 4 x 3W marker lights for the camper spliced into the rear light wiring. Using my skool math that means I'm putting 1 amp more than standard through that circuit. So question for my techy CC friends - Is an extra amp on that circuit enough to burn out the switch contacts? I wouldn't have thought so! Anyways, they still work, along with all the other lights, just the dip beams are awol? Any input gratefully received  Double edit: Anyone have a photo of the switch?
  16. Are there any places I can buy a new column dimmer switch? Or do I need to take a trip to the wreckers yard to get one? I'm assuming you're referring to the stalk on the column by the steering wheel? Also, looking for tips on replacing the dimmer switch. I've read my haynes manual and it says I have to dismantle most of the steering column to get at it! I've searched the forum for clues and seen talk of the actual switch itself being at the bottom of the column? Please can someone clarify for me? Do I need to pull the column apart? Thanks loads in advance :wrench:
  17. indeed, trying to get up to see the trestles outside kelowna. Still snow bound for now, turned around when the truck started to sound more like a boat. Could be! The washer has been intermittent recently. Thing is, if I pull the light switch and wriggle it about the lights will come on without touching the dimmer switch? Just before it crapped out there was a nasty electrical burning smell.
  18. Thanks guys, fun and games this trip with the Devil's Spawn! Been camping and exploring trails on the snow line this weekend and we've got several new oil leaks, the lights problem, a creaking front coil spring and on the way back down the darn exhaust just broke in two. 200 miles and one high mountain pass to go. Fingers crossed we make it back over in one piece  Edit: found the button!
  19. Can't find the button? Hints? On the back or sides? Thanks
  20. Great, thanks Murphy, I'll try that :wrench:
  21. Hi guys. I'm out on the road and the lights on the devil's spawn truck are playing me up! :fs1: I've traced it to the main switch but I can't figure out how to remove it for an inspection. Can anyone help me? FYI, it's just the low beam circuit that has gone kaput, the mains work ok. Thanks in advance :)
  22. Mine holds on the ratchet when depressed but only just. All it takes is a gentle accidental tap with my toe and twang! it releases. Cheers :wrench:
  23. Yes it is! Thanks loads
  24. Hey guys :waving: I recently saw a link here somewhere to another site that had a detailed thread with photos on how to test each of the ignition system sensors on a 4.0L. Should've bookmarked it right away! I can't find it now. Anyone know where it is please and thank you?
