Good luck with your new vehicles. If the Comanche bug bites again (it probably will ;) ) maybe shell out a good whack on one that's already been fixed up like new by another enthusiast? You can have the best of both worlds then.

Holes in the floor pans and an inexplicable Comanche addiction, once you have one they start to replicate and fill your yard up  http://www.comancheclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=26132 -
possible to override when the AW4 tranny changes gears?
Jerry replied to Jerry's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
sweet it is possible! thanx  -
appreciate the input guys  I'll be looking for a stand alone tranny oil cooler then

I read over here - http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/aw4.htm - that Quote "They have a tendency to generate excessive amounts of heat". I noticed that mine gives off a hot rubber smell when I'm 'givin it some' up hill with a load on. I'm planning to find some HD trans oil to help but I think it may need a proper oil cooler. Any suggestions for cooling the tranny oil that doesn't include spending a million bucks on a flashy combined oil/water radiator core? Maybe a small extra rad if there's space? Cheers for any suggestions

Just a thought that came about from my concern over the gas consumption of my new 4.0L. The tranny changes gears at certain speeds, that's what it feels like anyways. So it must work on voltage output from the speedo or some such electrickery? I think it would be useful to be able to manually alter when the box changes. I reckon I could increase the fuel mileage quite a bit if I had more control over it. The 4.0L has more than enough grunt to pull in higher gears at lower speeds! With my manual tranny on the blue boy I change up a lot earlier in the rev range than the auto does and it's the measly 2.8L V6! If I could rig up a system where I could switch between total auto or semi auto it would be quiet cool. I s'pose I'm angling for any info on how the auto system works really and if ya'll think it's a good/bad idea. Anyone have any 2c on the subject?

Start by making sure you're using the right method! :redX: I went through this with my new to me 4.0L + AW4, the lever just didn't seem to want to move. The owners hand book says "change into/out-of 4WD-HI any any legal speed", this does not include being stationary. I found to get into 4WD-HI ........ drive in either direction above walking pace whilst pulling the lever gently but firmly, it might take a few tries, there's a knack. Once you got the knack it's easy. To get into 4WD-LO it's different again - Put truck into 'Neutral' and move the lever into the 4WD-LO position. To dis-engage either LO or HI put into neutral and shove the lever forward. It should move easily! If none of that works then, yes, you probably have a seized linkage. If you have a manual trans ...... into neutral, clutch in, move lever, no probs, easy. Might need to roll forwards or back just get the gears to slide together but no special method like the Auto box. Hope that makes sense, it's way too early here for clear mental functions! If it doesn't, shout me and i'll scan the page describing it in the owners manual, unless someone has already done this?
