Best option for valve cover gasket?
wooky48 replied to mknherhappy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Whether you use cork or rubber, may I also suggest using a dab or two of Hylomar sealant (by Permatex), this stuff works better (IMHO) than anything else I've ever used , oh, and it doesn't take much either. -
Nope, no shortages I've seen. We were talking at work today and one of the drivers said that in some of the smaller towns in North Georgia if you get a ticket, they are now adding a 15 buck surcharge on the ticket for the gas it took to pull you over

Geez, and the last time I was in Florida it was about .35 cents higher than here. I paid 4.18 for 89 octane the other day, I just can't bring myself to abuse my vehicles with the cheap stuff (87) OH, have yall heard?, Big Oil wants to raise the price, again, to pay for upgrades and repairs to their equipment  I thought that was what profits were for (kinda like me telling a customer he has to buy me a tire that blew on the way with his load of rock)

"WHAT'S INFRICKINSIDE ME ?!?!?" "You've got a monster inside of you" "Who are you?" "I'm the monster's Mother"

Those aren't scratches, creases, or even indents.....simply added character :brows: , makes yours unique from all others . The way I see it with ANY vehicle is this, if you want it to remain "perfect" ya gotta put it in a glass case and only take it out for dusting it off :brows:

Ok, a day or two late and a dollar short :brows: Positive cable end at the starter wasn't making a good connection, I replaced it and we're off to the races again Now to just get some reliable motor monitors (gauges) as well as insurance and a tag

I guess it helps to be a former employee of a particular yard that I go to first, folks aren't allowed to wander freely without the parts puller guys but on a good (and usually busy) day they will tell me where to look for what I need and off I go :brows: I'll show them the "extras" and most times it will only add a buck or two (if that). There has even been a few times where the pullers will hand me the bolts, a switch, etc. and tell me "here, you'll need this, put it in your pocket"

Thread Diameter, Etc. Temperature sender.
wooky48 replied to Beachbum1236's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Breathing new life into an old thread :brows: I am installing aftermarket gauges on my '89 2.5 and need to know if there is an alternate temp sender location (original at rear of the head doesn't look near big enough), the one I bought has a 5/8 brass nut at the end of the sensor tube/wire. I was looking under the hood and saw the water tube from the manifold to the thermostat as a possible (with a "T") unless there is somewhere else I can "tap" into. I'm throwing the towel in on the cluster, nothing on it works (correctly) except for high beam and turn lights and every time I go looking for a problem at hand something else goes "POOF" :headpop:  and I got it running good and gotta get this show on the road and let it be a work in progress while I do much needed repairs on my car. -
Here we go again  but THIS time it wasn't a dumb thumb (I hope). Had it up and running after fixing another vacuum line leak, just finished running a can of SeaFoam through it (it's getting smoother and smoother). It coughed/skipped once and poof  , white smoke started boiling up from the passenger side of the engine. Immediate shutdown and positive cable off the battery. After checking to make sure nothing was on fire I found the positive cable burnt in two at the motor mount under the alternator. It seems that the cable insulation was a bit gummy/gooey under there. New positive cable (routed away from the engine) and an additional ground from battery to the fender on now but all it does now it click, jumping the battery post on the solenoid to the starter engage terminal or with the key the click is coming from the starter. I don't know if it will run (was running though) because my yard is flat and no where to roll start it. I hope the starter isn't fried, gotta take it off anyway to check it though. I'll let yall know. I did learn a valuable lesson here: just because what you CAN SEE looks to be good doesn't mean it is (part you CAN'T SEE). Not gonna blame SeaFoam (coincidence) because the thing was running better than it ever had to date

Hey Pete, I didn't know about the elevations, just tryin' to get ya to crack a smile :brows: I think I did just that :D but if ya look at the map Detroit does sit "higher" than Atlanta  I was reading on the net the other day the various prices folks pay around the world, Finland (I think) 9.50 a gallon, Germany 8.+, Saudi Arabia .45 cents a gallon (go figure, and after we set up the equipment they throw us out of the country years ago and keep jacking up the prices :headpop: )

Theoretical Fix on Dash Cluster
wooky48 replied to wooky48's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
No luck with the dash lights  , looks like I'm gonna have to go with gauges sooner than I was wanting to (unless someone has an idea or suggestion, I can't start on this til next weekend). I'll take the ones (all electric) out of my boat, it's undergoing an overhaul anyway. I already have the sending units for water and oil. I did this once on a Malibu several years ago and the end result looked almost factory As far as the gas gauge, I'll run a new sender wire up and see if that fixes that, if not I'll just carry my 2 gallon gas jug til I figure out how far (miles) I can go after a fillup (SWAG it, Sofisticated Wild Axxed Guess) :brows: . -
...and use the KY Jelly with the "warming sensation"...  You mean like THIS?? Hope this gets past the censors
-
Sounds familiar too, I may work in and around Atlanta (tandem dump truck), doesn't mean I have to live there :brows: Tifton, THATS out in the country, south Ga (but like everywhere else it's growing too)
-
Imagine that, a Comanche with a chain drive :brows:
-
I did, and I told them to make a jeep truck again. I did also and suggested them to even to consider a 4 door Comanche (for the extra passengers we all seem to have sometimes)
-
Given the variables in and around a big city (Atlanta) , out here on the east side in Covington Ga at the Racetrack station 4.04 for premiuim, 3.94 midgrade, 3.84 for the cheap stuff. :headpop: I burn high test in my Mercedes and midgrade in everything else (they run better, better mileage, and less maintenance needed over the long run, :brows: IMHO) Owned the Benz for five years now, plugs pulled once about 3 years ago, checked the gap and right back in they went, starts every time

Theoretical Fix on Dash Cluster
wooky48 replied to wooky48's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
No Hornbrod, this was a problem inherited when I got the truck, just figured I'd tackle the bigger stuff first (get it running right ;) ) -
Here is/are the problem(s), no working idiot lights, dash backlights work only when head/taillights are on and knob is turned to light up interior lights (which don't work), gas gauge reads 1/2-3/4 when actually empty (add 2 gallons it reads past full). :hmm: Tomorrow I'm going to run a wire from a known good ground to the cluster ground(s) and see if this fixes this last little glitch (it was a bad ground from the block to the firewall that caused no lights, no ignition fire, etc) eventually I'll change over to an aftermarket gauge set (but it would be nice for the gas hand to work) Anyone else have a similar problem and am I on the right track here ? :dunno:

here it is, the commuter! the damn Flux Capacitor keeps putting the"CHECK ENGINE" light on. Imperial, you must either have a ranch or some kind of paradise to commute that far (and I thought I lived out in the "country"). From the time I pull out of my driveway (if I don't stop for a biscuit and coffee) I can be at work in 20-25 minutes. Oh BTW, hats off to you Imperial and all the firefighters out there.

Well Taz, THAT is a horse of a different color (pun intended) Ya gotta have the power for towing for sure, I should know, driving a tandem dump truck that CAN out pull empty trucks when I'm loaded (ya think the 6 speed automatic Mack has anything to do with it ?)
-
honestly, a 4 banger in a small car would be just as fast as a large truck. and you would double your mpg's. i used to own nothing but hondas before i bought my first jeep. the last one i had was a 91 civic. it got 35 mpg driving like a grandma, but it had plenty of power. then i swapped in a newer engine. it added 35hp. not only was it a lot faster but i also recorded my best mpg record of 37, and that was beating on it I may understand a bit of TAZ's way of thinking, I don't feel comfortable in a small car (crash factor) but am happy with my 6 banger blowing away some of the "8's" when I need to (meaning: getting out of the way of someone not focused on THEIR driving  ). Reality tells me that a 4 banger (my "new" Comanche) for back and forth to work is better and to save the size, power, and luxury for the weekends and the few trips I make out of town :brows:

Yea, but whats gonna happen when they go back UPHILL :brows: I usually seem to get better mileage going downhill into Florida from Georgia :dunno:

Adding air conditioner universal kit?
wooky48 replied to 87ComancheLB's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The compressor is the same -- it's the brackets and pulleys that might be different. You don't really WANT to mount the compressor where it "should" go on an early 2.5L. I'm not sure where it belongs on the TBI models, but on the '84 XJ the a/c compressor was mounted along the side of the engine so that the only way (and I ain't kiddin') to replace the #1 spark plug was to unbolt the compressor and swing it out of the way. So that would mean I'd have to relocate the alternator :hmm: . Also sounds like an SS454 ElCamino I had once, to change back plug on passenger side I had to remove the wheel and use two long extentions and a universal joint on the ratchet over the upper control arm  I'm not gonna go looking for A/C stuff yet, just a future thought. -
DumBAsS move of the week.......
wooky48 replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Not really a bonehead but true, I was changing the oil in a Chevette I had years ago. My daughter (5 years old at that time) was asking all kinds of questions and I explained to her that the oil was kind of like our blood. A few minutes later I asked her to go in the house and get me some paper towels to wipe my hands with. A minute later my Dad came crashing out the door ran up to where I was wondering if I was ok. My daughter went in and told him I needed to wipe some blood off of my hands. All three of us still laugh about that. -
I've been driving my car, a 6 cylinder '91 Mercedes gas burner, it gets about 20 miles per gallon (not bad for a big car) I also was driving my son's 'Yota Rav4 til the tag expired (he is overseas in the Navy) no pic of it yet but you can see part of it in the MJ pic I got my MJ not only for the (hopefully) better gas mileage, 4 slug w/4speed, but also because I need a hauler to bring in stuff for my boat, which it's overhaul is on hold til the truck is done A '72 SeaBird 19 ft runabout Maybe, just maybe gas prices will stabilize a bit when the boat is ready, the MJ should be able to tow it the 3 miles to the marina
