Any tire is a big tire for that axle. I've seen them break with tires from stock to 35s. That just happens to be one of the only pictures I have of a broken one. Willy

Also picked up the rest of the steel for the rear bumper and driver side rock slider. The passenger side of the rear bumper tacked in place. I had to modify the bumper mounting brackets and make the side support removable. I figured I probably would have to do something like this. There was just no way to get bumper on and off with the support tied into the mounting bracket. This is the passenger side support. Still have some work to do on the driver's side. Then I'll pull everything off, finish welding, and paint it. Willy

This was driving down the street. I would never spend money on a D35. But, if I had one, I wouldn't let it stop me from wheeling. Just realize it will break. When it does, don't bother fixing it, replace it. Willy

What do you need to do to it besides spring perches? Do you need to install gears or a locker? Willy

Mind if I ask how much just the SPAL controller cost and where you got it? Thanks, Willy -
I was able to replace the balancer with the engine in the truck. I removed the radiator to gain access. I'm not even sure if there is enough room to get a puller in there and take the balancer off with the radiator still in. Willy

If you already have the 8.8, I'm not sure why you're considering using the D35. You are already going to need to add spring perches to either axle. Sounds like the perfect time to install the 8.8. :???: Willy

Tires. Yes. A tire thread.

You are one of a very small crowd. When I worked for 4 Wheel Parts, the Claw was the most hated and returned tire of anything we sold. We had people threaten to sue the company if we did not take them back and replace them with a "decent" tire. Why? I'm curious what their complaints were. Too noisy? Bias or radials? I can just picture some idiot with a nose bleed Super Duty complaining about how his 49" bias Baja Claws bounce around for the first five miles every morning and grab every crack in the road. :rotf: Willy -
Early Wagoneers had a passenger side front differential. Somewhere around '79 or '80 they changed to driver side. Willy

If your only going to run a 33-35" tire your probably better off just doing some minor upgrades to your D30. In the long run it will be cheaper and will hold up just fine. We run 35's on D30's and wheel "hard" and haven't had an issue yet that's made me say "man I wish I had a D44 front". An easy upgrade is to find the newer style shafts with the 297x joints in them. If you go hunting at a junk yard you can find them for cheap; throw in a set of quality u-joints and they will hold just fine with 33's or 35's. If your dead set on a waggy 44 swap your best bet is to call up Bob @ Treks (TNT Customs) and order a waggy 44 truss to swap into the XJ/MJ. It's the easiest and in the long run the cheapest way to get the D44 into your XJ/MJ. Also remember that waggy 44's are 5 on 5.5 (you currently have 5 on 4.5), so your going to have to run a different set of rims for the front than the rear if your keeping your current rear axle. If you do any amount of wheeling carrying 2 different spares gets old quickly. I agree. The nominal strength increase from a high pinion D30 to a low pinion D44 just isn't worth the effort of swapping over all the brackets, etc. In my opinion your weak point will still be the axle shaft u-joints, which are the same with 297/760 shafts for both the D30 and D44. For the most part, you should be fine with 33" to 35" tires on your D30 if you upgrade to 297/760 shafts and don't launch it off any sweet jumps. :brows: Willy

Your talking rear axle, the thread is about FRONT axles. The XJ/MJ never came with anything put a D30 in the front. This isn't entirely true. In the US, yes. In other countries, it depends. I know some export markets - Brazil - got XJs with a D44/D30 hybrid similar to the Rubicon D44. I don't know anything about Canadian XJs, but if Brazil got them maybe Canada did too. :dunno: Willy

Even if some don't like him, it is hard to deny that he is at least very intelligent and well educated. That is far more than can be said of the current president. :dunno: Willy

he didnt choose his name! He chose not to change it! :D So, if we had a guy who was named 'Omar Mohammad Kador' or such, and he changed his name to 'Keith Evens' you'd trust him? that's hilarious. and cutting through the BS, IMO of all the potential reasons he should not be President, the simplest one is he is not experienced enough to be qualified. Catch him with a question he is not prepared for or can't spin towards his rehearsed responses and he stumbles. I think you have him confused with the current president. Willy

The cast spring perch needs to be trimmed to fit the TNT truss on the Ford D60. There are some pics of one here http://pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=627998&page=13. I know there is another thread in the Pirate Cherokee forum where a guy just cut a notch in the spring perch, but I can't seem to find it at the moment. :dunno: Willy

Where does the starter go? I don't see a place for it in the bell housing. Thanks, Willy -
This happened to me in college. I worked in downtown KC where the only places to park are shady parking garages that are falling apart. I had a '87 Chevy Spectrum that didn't like to run consistently for more than a couple of days at a time. I came out of work one evening and found the rear quarter glass busted and my stereo was gone. Too bad the CD player didn't work in the stereo. :D Willy

This is one reason why I don't like TREs on track bars. Even though this is my drag link, if I still had a track bar with a TRE it would have been subject to the same stresses from the suspension travel. I will admit that I was not nice to this TRE. :D Willy
-
I would think bushings on each end of the track bar would allow too much side to side movement. Bushings are generally used on the axle end to help eliminate noise. I know of a few who are going to solid mounts on each end of the track bar to eliminate all play. Yes, this is by far a superior design with a couple of benefits. You get additional range of motion at this joint without binding. You also end up with a double shear mount which captures the joint on both sides and provides a much more solid mount. The track bar receives incredible stress during turning and suspension travel which I feel the stock TRE design barely handles adequately. Willy

Thankfully you weren't bad luck to anybody else!!! Sorry for your little inconvenience, but at least you didn't plow into another innocent person who just happened to be near you when your brakes failed! That is completely irresponsible. Hopefully you learned something and will never put anybody else's life in danger by doing something like this again. Willy

I removed the driver side quarter panel. Welded the bumper to the brackets. Now I just need to wait until I get the rest of the tubing before I finish it. Willy
