Swapping '97+ Power Accessories
reson46 replied to reson46's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If the doors were usable, I know I can swap them. I am not swapping to the XJ style parking brake. I am specifically asking about the electrical aspect of the power windows, locks, and mirrors. As well as any control boxes for these, unless they are all controlled through the computer. Thanks, Willy -
I am parting out my '98 XJ and trying to figure out what I can use on the MJ before I scrap it. I found mfpdm's thread about swapping to '97+ door handles and mirrors that I plan on doing too. I'll probably also swap over the lock cylinders since the MJ's driver side lock cylinder is falling apart. The XJ has power locks, windows, and mirrors (mirrors are also heated). Are all these power features controlled through the computer on '97+ XJs? Has anybody swapped this stuff without doing an entire '97+ interior/exterior/computer swap? Obviously this would all go easier if I had a pre-97 XJ, but since I've got the '98 I may as well see what I can use off of it. Thanks, Willy

I'm surprised how many think a 4.0 low range is too low. :hmm: I've been running a 4.3 Atlas for years with 35s, 4.10 gears, and an automatic. I almost never use high range. When I go wheeling I immediately shift into low and go. I wheel in just about every terrain besides sand. I could see how it may be too low for sand or baja, but for everything else it is great. There have even been several times I would have liked lower gearing. Willy

I was referring to by hand. Those looked like climbing shoes in your pictures. Willy

Are you a rock climber? Good luck on the surgery. Willy

All that weight was a big concern for me too. Plus all the extra leverage way back there. On the MJ I built an extra mount that attached to the doubler adapter plate. There are several pics on page 2 of my build thread here of the mount. I plan on doing something similar for my Scout. But, I'll build a sub-frame that hard mounts to the transmission and transfer cases, then mount the bushings where the sub-frame attaches to the frame. That will allow the entire drivetrain to rotate as one with the motor and transmission mounts in line from front to back. Hopefully I was able to explain that coherently. :hmm: I may even add a mount to the rear of the Atlas similar to what Roark Fabworks makes. Willy

Removing Front Axle Shaft

You may check with Ten Factory. I heard they have been trying to warranty some of the old Alloy USA stuff. :dunno: Willy -
The stock mounts are horrible. I rarely run across any that are not broken. Unless you really enjoy changing them get some quality mounts. I have a couple of sets of MORE mounts. They are excellent and I highly recommend them. The Brown Dog mounts also appear to be way better than stock. Willy

anyone have a DIY write up for the battery cables
reson46 replied to comanche13's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It's very simple. Since you already read my build thread I'm sure you've seen this. What do you need to know besides that? Willy -
I'm sure you already considered this and I may have missed it, but why are you spending all this time on a D35? :hmm: Willy P.S. Be very careful when working under there, your cinder blocks are turned on their weak side.

Is the tailgate not original? You mentioned 4 cylinder, but the tailgate does not agree. Willy

You're not seriously going to go to all that work and put a Fram oil filter on there are you? Willy -

Cool design. Kind of reminds me of the Punisher. Willy -
* Engine Temperature Gauge I've become pretty disgusted with the performance of the stock temperature gauge. It "works" when it wants to and when it does it is far from accurate. I've read enough about the miserable performance of the stock stuff when in perfect condition, much less 20 years old, to not even want to mess with getting it to work. My plan is to use a later model thermostat housing with the temperature sensor in it and hook up an aftermarket gauge to it. Any recommendations for a quality gauge at a decent price? * Transmission Temperature Gauge What I would like to do here is run two temperature sensors - one before the cooler and one after. I'll run both sensors to one gauge with a switch to toggle back and forth. Any gauge or sensor recommendations here? Thanks, Willy

Aftermarket MJ Rear Sway Bar

No, both shocks mount in front of the axle on a long bed. Willy -
Rule #1 - do not buy a dog from a pet store. I don't care what those sh!theads tell you, I can almost guarantee their dogs came from a puppy mill. Find one at the SPCA, humane society, shelter, rescue, etc. A few hundreds dollars can really be a bargain if you think about how much money they probably spend on each dog. They usually make sure the dog is spayed/neutered, checked out by a vet, current on shots, food, etc. That all adds up very quickly especially if a dog is not adopted immediately. I have no problem spending a few hundred dollars to adopt a dog if the money is going to the right place. We are actually adopting a dog from a local rescue that I met with earlier today. We are going to pick him up Sunday and he is worth more than the $300 adoption fee. He is a 9 year old blue heeler who was abandoned by his family when the a$$holes had a kid. We don't even have to come up with a new name, his is perfect - Jeep. He will join Moab and Axle. Willy

Aftermarket MJ Rear Sway Bar
reson46 replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I was wondering about that from the picture. Is it possible to mount the sway bar on the front of the axle? It looks like it has a bend in the middle that may clear the pinion if positioned in the right place. But there may be issues with the driver side link clearing the gas tank too. Willy
