    New XJ

U-Joint tore itself apart in the rear on sunday, so the XJ has been under the knife. Still going with the bastard pack/spacer lift. My leaf pack right now is a Main, Main, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4. Do you guys think this will be too stiff?
  3. a minnesotan here, live in Lanesboro (SE By Iowa and WI). People think i'm crazy for driving rusty jeeps :fool:
  4. Minnesota here, starting to finally warm up!
  5. umm... you mean the rusty pins that fell out as soon as I hit the drum? Yeah, everything is coming with it, I am just trying not to damage the pump (or whatever is in there).
  6. I'll probably just take the good ol'e 4 ft. pry bar and pop it off, damaging as much as I can :fool:
  7. They are off a 98 with ABS. Decent condition of the ring/pinion and everything else, except the rear left drum. The right one came off no problem. The 3.07 axles are off a 92. I paid $150 for both of the 3.55 axles and all of the stock suspenison, so I didn't really mind the D35. They only have 120k miles on them compared to the 175k of my cherokee's. The guy had a pretty sweet 98 cherokee with 6.5 longarm, SYE, 33's, 140k for $5.5K. A little out of my price range for now though.
  8. its just a junky D35 with 3.55 gears. Picked it up with a front axle to help out with my new 31" tires (3.07's not too good). Was gonna go through the brakes, it got stuck and started pulling out everything with it. The star wheel turned, followed the Hayne's manual on the whole drum thing. Did the star wheel and turn other way.... Just looking for some ideas of how to get the drum off. The shoes are stuck to the walls of the drum. Everything was pretty rusty inside anyways, so i was just thinking of replacing the innards and the drum with my 3.07 rear axle ones. Thanks, JD
  9. So I am redoing some drum brakes on a spare XJ axle for my lift and new tires. Time to pull off the drum, and whattya know, the brake pads and everything else decide to come with it. I had already tried to loosen the shoes, but they were too stuck on it to release. Any ideas of how to get the drum off? thanks, JD

    New XJ

Been a while since i have posted, been working a lot lately (well, for a 16 year old). those junky non-existent rockers have been replaced with sheet metal (frame tied sliders to come later) and are going to be coated with por-15. Picked up the axles I needed with 3.55 gears with full front and rear suspension and 2" spacers for $160 (d30 and d35, i know it sucks, but that's all that has been available lately). So as soon as school is over, put the XJ out of comission and do a bastard-pack rear and spacer/coil front to fit the 31's. Progress pics to come.
  11. well, i think i have everyone beat. . . October 12, 1992 (16 years old! ) Joined this forum when I turned 15 and had just bought my comanche.
  12. I'm typing this on an iPod so don't hate. I flew here on my dads frequent miles for free. I am in Fairbanks right now and am enjoying everything. Pics will me posted on my return next Thursday. Really wish I had a snowmobile up here right now! I would love to ride here for the scenery. Will probably have updates through the week. Happy jeeping JD
  13. Leaving for Alaska tomorrow! Just a trip with my aunt/uncle and cousins. staying at the Anchorage AFB and touring some other places for a week. Time to go back to the snow. . .
  14. Watched the movie "Monster's Ball" recently and it had a pioneer in it for pretty much the whole movie.

    New XJ

Alright, havent done much lately other than tuning up the engine and general maintinence. Been looking at buying a 3 inch lift. So far I have came up with these (tell me what you think) I'm not looking for super flexy, most driving will be done in pastures and mud. I just need a decently priced kit with good on road manners. My rear springs are already pretty shot, so I am thinking blocks is the best option until I get new springs. Tuff country Jeep Cherokee XJ 3.5" Lift Kits - (with rear blocks) $300 Good: LCA's, no AAL, trackbar relocation Bad: No shocks, sway bar extensions Motion 3" kit (Springs, AAL, Blocks) $200 Good: Reputable seller Bad: No LCA's, trackbar, swaybar links, Has AAL
  17. taz, you have the same hurst shifter that I have in the XJ. Mine is stripped out though, so it sits the long way

    New XJ

Got some new tires yesterday. They will be the basis of my lift and mods. They are new 31x10.5 BFG AT-KO's. Got them for $60 :brows: . Long story short, my dad's friend was turning in his '97 tacoma for the factory recall on the frame (KBB Excellent value + 50%) He decided that the tires that he had just put on should go to somebody who would use them (ME). All I had to pay for was $20 for 4 junk 30x9.5's and $40 to swap them out. I'm looking at the RE 3.5" lift to fit them, new axles with 3.55 gears or higher, body mods on the rockers and rear quarters, and possibly some new bumpers. Will keep updating as things come along. PS: If anyone in my area has some axles for sale, pm me.

    New XJ

Yeah, i just need to figure out a good design. My pinch seam is pretty much gone so tying into that is not an option. I don't really know If i trust my welding skills by welding onto the frame, so I would probably just have to weld to the sheet metal on the body only.

    New XJ

I found this posting today. http://mankato.craigslist.org/pts/1063978072.html Might be able to piece together a nice rig with it. D30 and D44 with aussies $800, 4.5 inch lift which includes rear 3" leafs with 1.75" greasable shackles, front 4.5" coils, rustys lower control arms $400 (just need a trakbar). 5-31x10.5x15 bias ply SS TSL's still in pretty decent shape mounted on 15x8 crager soft 8s with 4 inch backspace - $350. Front axle has abs setup, can it be run on a non-abs vehicle? Thanks, JD

    New XJ

Yeah, the silver has aluminum metal filler in it so it is a little stronger/fills in divots really well. I am trying to decide between replacing the rockers with factory panels, or making build in sliders instead of the rockers. At $50 a side for new panels, i'm wanting to just weld in some steel bar, but it would be nice to have the "factory" look on it too.

    New XJ

Here are some pics of the newly acquired 1992 Cherokee. Didn't know if this belonged in the projects section since it is an XJ. Feel free to move it  Some specs on it: Paid $1,000 for it. 170,000 miles, runs strong. All fluids replaced 3 years ago. New cooling system and shocks. The PO was a napa mechanic. I know its rusty, but Its still sturdy everywhere but the rockers and floor. POR-15 on the floors, stuff dries harder than heck. So far very impressed.

    2WD Rant

My '88 2wd went anywhere this winter, even in 6" of snow. Lots of weight and thats about it. I did have some tire cables though, they worked very well when it got deeper. My tires were just some highway ones with about an 1/8" tread left. My gravel driveway is about a 35 degree angle (I don't know grade) up for about 50 yards, with about an inch of ice at any given time. Trick is definitely not to start the tires spinning, 2nd gear works really well in a manual if you spin it at about 2.5k rpm's and let it back off from there as you slip. Just my 2 cents
  24. Yeah, it would be nice. I don't know if I have the extra $$ laying around right now. I'm only 16, sports and school take up my weekdays (7am-6pm) and milking for $$ on the weekends. I'm also an avid snowmobiler, so I have about $1400 tied up in that motor sport. Shoot me a price you are looking to get for it.
  25. Like I said though, the hunt begins for a new one (Hopefully 4wd and less rust). Pete, I owe you $15 still, I'll send you a check soon.
