  1. First, remove the new cable and get some lubricant into it. If it's possible to slide the inner cable out of the sheath, wipe it down with a light, non-hardening grease or a quality synthetic oil. Second, check the routing of the cable. Often, jumping is a result of a tight radius bend somewhere in the routing of the cable beteween the speedo and the transmission or transfer case output.
  2. Thanks. I have ordered 10-packs of the 142- and 157-degree thermal limiters from Amazon. Once they arrive I'll have to se if I can get the outer cover off to access the terminals for soldering in the new fuse, and hope for the best.
  3. When not hanging out here, I sometimes lurk on a forum for authors. A young woman on that site recently contacted me because she somehow thought I know something about welding. Since I can't recall ever mentioning welding on that site, I think she has me confused with someone else. But, I would like to help her with the question. She asked if there is an industry name or term for a bumpy weld, like this: Does a weld like that have a name? TIA
  4. Found a very old thread in which Jim Oshell pointed to the old XJ FSM schematic, which showed the thermal fuse with a rating of 149 degrees C. I haven't had any luck finding that exact rating, but Amazon has some at 142 degrees and 157 degrees. At 70 cents per fuse for a pack of ten, I'll try them. https://www.amazon.com/BOJACK-Thermal-Degrees-Celsius-Cutoffs/dp/B07Y62XXZX/ref=sims_dp_d_dex_ai_speed_loc_touchpoints_mtl_t2_d_sccl_3_2/131-2691869-6617666?pd_rd_w=O4wO0&content-id=amzn1.sym.b60dadd9-7f9e-4256-887b-3cfe6cc8c59d&pf_rd_p=b60dadd9-7f9e-4256-887b-3cfe6cc8c59d&pf_rd_r=ST8JHMKR59Q6THH6NN7X&pd_rd_wg=iCKjc&pd_rd_r=8f37e6dc-d0ee-47f6-afc1-d8a8cb49a505&pd_rd_i=B07Y62XXZX&psc=1 The plan now is to repair all the old ones I have had to remove, replace the thermal fuses, and keep 'em as spares.
  5. Sounds good.
  6. Contribution sent
  7. Those aren't pinstripes. Those are bands of a lighter tone of the same color, to indicate the steps in the body panels. Look again at the actual photo.
  8. Mice built another nest in the heater airbox of my 2000 XJ, causing the fan speed resistor pack to overheat and burn out the thermal fuse. EagleScout is getting me a replacement, but those things aren't cheap. I have a growing collection of them that could be repaired by soldring in a replacement thermal fuse. If I knew what rating fuse to use. And if I knew where to get the thermal fuses. Can anyone help? @Ωhm are you there? Paging Dr. Ohm, to the yellow courtesy phone, please.
  9. Pete - Send me what you have and I'll see what I can do.
  10. Just keep in mind that the plastic tank on the firewall is NOT a "purge" or overflow tank -- it is part of the pressurized cooling system. In fact, that tank is where the coolant expands as it gets hot. For that reason, it's super important NOT to fill that tank to the top when cold. Don't fill it more than halfway. There's a post inside to show the correct fill level, but it's awkward to see it.
  11. March 2005 was when Pete launched the Comanche Club. I would use that date. Similar to you, I was a member of the old Internet XJ group that eventually led to the creation of NAXJA, but I consider my join date for NAXJA to be the date it was formed (I am a charter member), not whatever date I joined the previous group.
  12. Nice. I like the Desert Sand color with the military-esque stars.
  13. According to the infallible Wikipedia, Comic Sans is included with Windows 10 and MacOS. If it's in Windows 10, it's probably also in Windows 11. Y'all should have it, so the cards should view and print correctly on all systems -- except if you're on Linux you'll have to do some font substitutions.
  14. Apple Pages can open Word files, and so can LibreOffice and OpenOffice. Most word processing programs should be able to open it. Except for the "ComancheClub.com" at the top, the font is Arial, and I think every system includes that. The "ComancheClub.com" is in Comic Sans. I believe Windows provides that font -- not sure about Apple. In fact, it looks like even WordPad will open it. If you don't have Comic Sans, there are several font sites from which you can download it or something very similar for free. Just change the name to your name, and change the joined date to whatever your profile here on the site shows.
  15. Pete has received the template. I'm leaving it up to him to figure out how to make it available. I don't know if the forum software allows a way to make a Word document directly available for download.
  16. [Update] I just sent Pete a revised version, using Comic Sans. I think everyone should have that, and it appears to match the font used in the logo graphic. I just e-mailed Pete a template for printing business card-size membership cards on Avery card stock. If Pete okays it, I'll leave it up to him how he wants to distribute the template. It's in Word, so anyone can open it to fill in your name and the date you joined. The "ComancheClub.com" is in a font called Comic Strip MN. I don't know if that came onto my computer from Windows, or from some aftermarket font collection. If you don't have that font, try Comic Sans -- I think everyone has that.
  17. I thought Pete already had something like that. Lemme look ... [Update] Found it:
  18. In Connecticut anything 20 years old or older is considered to be an antique. We no longer use the term "antique" for registration now, though. The official designation on the tags for years was "Early American." Now they're changed it again, to "Classic Vehicle." There's a catch, though. The vehicle has to be in original configuration. It doesn't have to be "original" -- it can be rough or it can be a frame-up restoration (not 100% applicable to an MJ or an XJ, of course), but it can't be modified. So lifts, monster tires, aftermarket flares, etc, would disqualify you.
  19. RATZ! I didn't even think about the remote receiver. So if I change out the console I would have to take the vehicle to the dealer and have the key fobs reflashed to the vehicle?
  20. WTB: Full overhead console for '99 - '01 Cherokee XJ. My late wife's 2000 XJ Classic has the full overhead console. My 2000 XJ Sport doesn't -- all I have is the small dome light panel. Aside from liking the compass (although I rarely need it), my headliner is sagging and I think putting in a full console might help keep it off my head. If possible, I'd prefer gray. The temperature sensor and wiring would be a plus, but not absolutely necessary. Unfortunately, Connetcut doesn't allow u-pull junk yards, so I can't go searching for this myself. I have no idea what's a fair price. If you have one or have access to one, let me know what you need to get for it. Thanks.
  21. I understand that an '86 would have TBI. It wouldn't if I were to do a rebuild. I hate the Jeep TBI,, and I would much prefer to have a carburetor -- so that's what I would use.
  22. Sadly, Jeep currently doesn't make anything I might be interested in buying or owning. I think I was done when they stopped testing new vehicles by driving the Rubicon Trail, and instead just slapping a "Trail rated" badge on them.
  23. It's an '86 -- the firewall might not be configured to accept a 4.0L. The easiest swap for an '86 2.5 liter (other than another 2.5L) is the GM 3.4L V6. Not the 4.3 -- the 4.3 is a shortened small block V8 -- it's a 90-degree block, so it's a lot wider than the 3.4, which is a 60-degree V6. If you're going to think about a 4.3, you might as well go all the way and just drop in a SBC V8. Personally, I think I'd rebuild the 2.5L and throw in a performance cam and either a real carburetor, or aftermarket fuel injection.
  24. It's not just you. I also consider the Gladiator to be a more modern Scrambler. I'm starting to see some of them on the road -- they still look stupid, IMHO -- but I haven't yet seen a single one of them doing anything that requires a pickup truck, and I haven't seen one that has tools in the back or a contractor's name painted on the driver's door. The new Gladiator isn't a pickup truck -- it's a life style vehicle.

    In absentia

Sorry I haven't been around much of late, Gents. Been having some health issues. I'm still around and I still have my XJs and MJs. I expect to get back to more regular participation one of these days.
