Seems like an awful lot of work to get a game that runs really, really slow.
-
Eh, not too many pics. It was pretty straightforward, but I'll grab a pic of the PO's lovely, lovely welding jobs on the old crossmember, and the frame rot I discovered while under there. Once this thing's in Missouri, it's getting parked for awhile. Strip the whole thing down and get all that fixed up.

I wasn't planning on putting in any of the 91 wiring. I was going to retain all the 98 manifolds, sensors, etc. All that is fine. Something inside the motor seized. So all the 98 sensors would go into the 91 block? Would I have to swap distributors? No inspections.

My brother's 4.0 seized on him last night. Luckily just a few miles from his house, and I had just gotten to his house before it happened so I was able to push it home with my XJ. I have a rebuilt 91 4.0 HO with about 50k on it. Will this be a direct dump into a 98? I know they had different cams, but is there anything else I would have to worry about?

Yeah I was actually up at 4:45 yesterday morning... no idea why. We got pretty far along. All the old stuff out, Brent got the welds for the trans crossmember ground off for me. Hopefully I'll only need to get 1 or 2 of the broken bolts out to get the new one bolted on. Trans is in, and bolted to the motor, just need to attach all the little stuff, get the crossmember onto the truck, and have the DS shortened.

A 231 from behind an AX-4/5 up to IIRC 98 should have the same length input and spline count.

And it just happened to be caught on video, in which there's no pelican?

Was it being RC'd?

Yeah, and my friend Chris (69camaroSS) was supposed to be down here tonight, so I was gonna enlist him, but they won't be down here until tomorrow, not sure what time, so he may or may not be able to help. Even so, I guess he messed up his back... Oh, and they're bringing Beaterjeep. So you'll get to meet him Brent.

My new computer is too slow... I'll have to get it installed on my old faster one when I get back to MO.

A second Jack certainly wouldn't hurt anything. Anything that might be helpful in the extraction of broken bolts inside the framerail. I haven't checked too closely, there's at least one, but could be three.

I'd say it's time to upgrade to a 231. They're everywhere, and probably be about the same amount of money as fixing your 207. And even if you fixed it... you'd still have a 207.

I'm downloading, but I get the feeling I should wait to play it. I do have stuff to do tomorrow..

Jake came up and helped me swap the 4.10 non-disco D30 onto my 4.0 and took home his free 3.55 CAD D30. Only took 2 1/2 hours with a lot of gab and I haven't bled the brakes yet. I'm sure the fact that this is the 3rd axle swap in less than two years helps. See you guys tomorrow for the real fun part.

$250 for an external AX-15 and T-case is a good price, as long as there's nothing wrong with it.
-
96 was a weird electrical year. A 96 AX-15 will bolt up just fine, but you'll need 79 CJ 7 304 pilot bushing. You'll need the trans mount and T-case shift linkages too. You'll also be converting to an external slave cylinder setup. I don't remember if your current clutch stuff will work, but with it out it's a good time to replace it anyway.

cracked head gasket....i think

Compression test. I'll bring my tester with me when I come back down in case you don't get ahold of one before then. -
Really your only option is an AW-4. It was the only auto offered behind the 4.0 In XJ/MJs, and a 4wd one will be bolt-in in place of your 2wd one. The AW-4 is a very sturdy transmission, I wouldn't worry about strength.
-
You will need a 4x4 trans.

There's less than 2000 miles on the RMS. 19psi is at idle, and when running. It doesn't start to go up until over 3000, at 3500 it's about 35psi. I forgot to mention in the other post that once in awhile, when I start it up, there's no oil pressure for the first few seconds, then it jumps up to 55-60. And the motor does sound different during those few seconds. As for the 98, it's not a recent oil change, and he's not using Fram filters. I just recently got him off of Fram.

What gearing are you running? I could have a 3.55 geared axle available.

insane rattle from transmission
Geonovast replied to jmderyke's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
What was rattling? If all the bellhousing bolts were tight, and the inspection cover was tight, it shouldn't be rattling at all, even if it was a little bent. Did you check to make sure you still have all 6 bellhousing bolts going into the motor? -
First is my XJ(88 4.0). Right when I start it, oil pressure reads about 55-60. After it warms up, it settles down to 19. I'm hoping changing the main and rod bearings will fix this, but I wanted to see if there was anything else I should tackle while I have the pan off... again. My brother's XJ(98 4.0) is also having a problem. About a week ago it started a very loud lifter tick, and right when the tick started his oil started staying at 50-55 instead of right at 40 where it's always been. Spun cam bearing maybe? Is there anything we can do to help this without tearing the motor apart?
