The Tan Turd of a XJ

Recommended Posts

Well a few PPl know I have been secretly gathering parts to build a "cheap" trail rig

So here is what we started with

I have owned it for a year, and have had a good time driving it around, until the driverside power window stopped working

IN the middle of stripping the interior

Some of the cool parts for it

I still have to swap out the tranny and re do the suspension.

So far I have Order the Rock Krawler 3 link kit

I have the tranny (an aw4 with a 231w an AA SYE all ready in it). Jeff When you and TJ coming down ;)

Tires will either be Procomp AT's or a set of Dunlop Mud Rovers... No room in the budget for what I want 34x9.5 LTB's

As always I am open to ideas and suggestions... but more the llikely I won't listen and still build it the way I want :D

Pat i will be over Tuesday or weds to help you get the trans out and i will bring the trailer so i can get pong out of your way :nanner:

If you are coming to get Pong.. and all the parts Bring about 18 grand, I prefer large denominations, makes it easier to count.

MINI,

you running this setup? If so what size springs and tires are you running?

I was hopint to be able to use some 4.5 coils I have and run 33 mud rovers on it  but if that don't clear them.. I have a set of 6.5 coils laying around :D then I will just have to go buy some pizza cutters (34x9.5 LTB), to make it look right :smart:

Everyone here knows I am afraid to cut metal away :teehee: I was auctualy thinking of dovetailing the rear  THe guy who did the HACK work on the rig before I got it... cut way past the pinch seams in the rear, thne he tried to hide it with bondo yeahthat.gif and level it with a metal grining wheel :dunce: instead of sand paper  That being sad the panels are now loose, so I either need to mini tub the rear  or dovetail it, not sure which. More then likely Mini Tubs as they are easier to do.

UP font I know I stil have to trim a touch more, and bend oveer the pinch seem... after that.. Bump stopping is all you can do

First off I have to say thenks to Jeff for all his help. We got a good front axle jamminz.gif out of an 86 xj, with the 242 in it. We got ready to start to get the shifter, and it was more work then I had time to invest today. I had taken some pics.. but.. for some reason my phone didnt save them.

Now I just have to strip this axle, and get it to the guy doing my gears tommorow.. so he can do them before he goes on a trail ride wensday.

Well Yesterday (monday) I got the axles dropped off at the axle builders... got a few pics of what they got going on at their shop.

This is Friday as I was preparing to head out to Ground Pounder Fab for the cage work.

This is the axle builders rig. Basically it is a right hand drive IH Scout on rockwells with a doubler

Also at the shop they build Gatsby kit cars... here is one of their current projects

This is Shawn's (axle builders) ride.. its a stortened and reworked lincoln frame with a 351W. Car might weigh in at 2500 pounds when done, talk about a fun ride.

I'm easily bribed with a couple (dozen) cold beers.......

(p.s. the '30 was from an 89 XJ, not an '86, remember? the 86 had the 3.73's but was a disco.....)

Jeff

p.p.s.......you forgot your waggy springpacks, they're still in my backyard :thwak:

Pat

I have a 33x12.50 dunlop mudrover I was using as a spare if you need a 5th for your rig. it is already mounted on a 15x8 black steelie with 4.25 back spacing. Let me know if you might need it. I am getting ready to do some serious ebay and CL to clean out my shed. wanted to give you first right of refusal.
