WyoCherokee
Is it possible to run a tach with the module type coils that we have? cause i know normally you have to run a wire to the negative side of the coil, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that with this type. I'm sure it is do-able.
maddzz1
You can just swap in a gauge cluter with tach. You need to change the temp sensor and the oil sensor if your gauge has idiot lights.
WyoCherokee
so the wiring and everything is already there, i would just have to plug they new one in to the old plug in, and change the sensors?
Eagle
so the wiring and everything is already there, i would just have to plug they new one in to the old plug in, and change the sensors? Yep. You have to get a cluster that fits your year, though. They used mechanical speedometers from 1984 (Cherokee) through 1990, and electronic speedoometers from 1991 up. There were two types of the mechanical speedo, and they don't interchange. The early type ran from 1984 through either 1986 or maybe mid-1987, the new type from 1987 through 1990. Also, if possible get a tach out of a vehicle with the same number of cylinders you have. Some of the tachs have a potentiometer and can be adjusted for four or six-cylinder use ... but not all have that.
maddzz1
Yes. The only thing is some have mechanical speedos and some have electric speedos. I think the electric started in 91 but not positive. What year is your MJ?

HOrnbrod
Planet reference was "Earth first, we'll log the other planets later". Nothing derogatory meant. But the search function does work, i.e. type in cluster AND gauge AND swap AND idiot (for idiot lights) :D That's why the DIY section needs updating and topics defined, even if "borrowed" from other forums, and/or search the other forums, like NAXJA. Makes it easier for everyone. Just tired or repeating, repeating the same stuff over and over.
WyoCherokee
yea yea yea. i figure ill get razzed since I'm the FNG for while. ive been exploring the topics for like the past 5 hours trying to get aquanted with the layout. Eagle
its an 88. Is there a dash that has a tach and idiot lights? or is that a shot at the moon? No. Any cluster with a tach will have full instrumentation. Why would you WANT idiot lights? The answer to your original question, BTW, is "Yes." My '88 MJ already had gauges, but no tach. I couldn't find a cluster I could afford, so I stuck in a Sun SuperTach. Works fine.
WyoCherokee
so i wouldnt have to change the temp sensors. i prefer guages though
Eagle
Not temp sensors, plural. Temp sensor, singular. And the oil pressure sender. If you want to stay with the idiot lights, buy a Sun Super tach and strap it to the steering column. Mine has been just fine for 8 years.
chicofuentes0224
This is going in circles. 1)First, get a whole cluster from an MJ or XJ. Get it from an 87,88,or 89 to be safe. Get the one with a TACH and all four gauges. 2)Make sure the connector on the speedometer is the same as yours. (white plastic or aluminum) 3) to be safe get one from a 2.5 liter. 4) Go to your favorite parts place and buy a temp sensor and oil pressure sensor. 5) Go ahead and buy a speedometer cable and grease. Put it in cuz now is the perfect time since you got everything apart. 6) Take an hour of your day and get it done. You'll be much happier :D 7) If you have any questions on the install please feel free to ask. We will only ridicule you if we're extremely bored or outta beer. Good luck :D
