Any of you guys live near conneticut?

 

I E-mailed detours and asked if they were going to make rock sliders and rear bumpers for the long bed mj's. their reply was they can't find a descent long bed that isn't rusting away to use as a template.

 

I was just wondering if some one on here lived near them could take in their L/B Mj for them to use.

 

If you haven't seen their mj products you should take a look. the rear bumper is a low profile design that goes good with the body lines and they are the only ones that I have seen to produce an actual rock slider for the MJ.

I am in Connecticut, and the man at Detours is a friend of a friend.

 

I have a couple of longbeds here that he is more than welcome to come measure off of, but they are not running or registered so I can't take them to him. If he has a trailer and wants to borrow one for awhile, that would be okay, too.

I also emailed Detours last week and received the same reply. I like their slim profile design (rear bumper), and sliders. Curios how many more folks are interested and can get Detours interested in making rear bumper and sliders for the LWB.

Sweet XJ Maki! How did you hook-up with Detours and got them to make it for your SWB. Or did they approach you? I suppose for LWB, Detours will need to adj bracketry to support the longer pcs of metal. If you are still in contact with Detours (the guy who replied to me from Detours was Mark C), let them know there's atleast two MJ owners interested in their products for LWB.

 

Both my MJ and XJ have the same amount of lift but the challenge with my MJ LWB is departure angle. After wheeling/climbing in mud/dirt in Hollister, and dragging the rear stock bumper, I scoop about 10-20lbs of dirt and I can sell as pre-mortar mix - LOL. I am looking for a rear bumper slim and angular in design - and strong enough that I can use as a rear skid (compensate for the LWB)!

I've been wheeling with Detours (Mark) for a few years now and we're in the same 4x4 club. So when I bought that MJ, before I even lifted it, I left it with him to prototype some MJ rails and the bumper since he'd talked about possibly making some MJ stuff and nobody was making it at the time. The rails use 3 legs and tie into the leaf spring front mount, very beefy and I'm not shy about banging it around either, those (SB) he's made a regular production item.

 

The bumper came out super slick, it protects the rear quarters when they do take a smack which isn't very often because it tucks up so high. Unfortunately with the bumper I guess it was a challenging enough fitment that he couldn't make it a mail order type thing so I think those are essentially custom fabbed if you can drop your truck off for a week or two, you'd have to call him about that I don't really know for sure, although he has made at least one other one for a local wheeler.

My name is Mark aka Detour, looks like I've been e-mailing a few here concerning some parts, I'm sorry I was'nt readilly available to help you out but maybe in the near future we can change this.. :D

 

Eagle......feel like selling one of those non running LWB MJ's? :idea:

 

Rails can be jigged after development, thats not a huge issue......Bumpers or atleast the ones I fabricate are developed directly on the vehical its self, I use the same format for XJ bumpers and have yet to get a return or mis-fit issue (I literally keep a rear section of an XJ here in the shop).

A skin tight bumper such as the one I like to produce is virtually impossible to create a jig for, thus....I'll seek a donor to become the jig.

 

Currently, I have a SWB MJ inside the shop receiving the rear bumper like Bic's......I know this dosent help you LWB folks out there, but you should know I do look forward to being able to supply you with Slyders & a rear bumper system in the near future... :wink:

Not having one to toy with, I can only go by the info I've been offered by

their owners.....last thing I want to do is offer something that dosent meet

the owners expectations...... :?

 

I appriciate this source of info....maybe someone with a tape would like to

offer assistance on the rear bumper issue...

 

1: Lower rear rocker area....measuring the straight crease which sticks

out furthest in this area.......SWB measures 21.5" from flare to the very

rear of the truck........LWB the same?

 

2:Very most rear of the MJ's frame, bottom area which protrudes.....the

measurement from there to square under/off the tailgate..SWB = 5 1/8"

 

What else??

Is the difference between the 2 found only between the wheelbase??

I've got all the measurements from my LWB when I built my bumper. If you search on NAxja under my name you'll find them in te picture showcase. I wish it was as sexy as yours, but it works.

The rocker measurements aren't there, but I can get those. Probably won't be till tomorrow,I'm doing wife work tonight.

I am really glad I started poking around here and asking questions. I got a few guys to possible arange something to get us some LWB MJ stuff. The slyders are on my need now list.

 

the rear bumper, I know how some of you feel. I have a smitty built tube bumper that hangs low with a built in 2" reciever, like I would tow anything off that!

 

mark please keep us posted on the developements and any need for assistance.

petermontie, there is absolutly no way the bumper I fab can be built off

simple dimensions........I was asking for the dimensions to cross referance

SWB areas to LWB areas.....thats all. :D

 

May have a LWB in the works, if so...within a short period of time, I should

be able to offer up you LWB guys some goodies!! :chillin:

Read again.............this thread concerns LWB, not 'short box'....

 

I should find out who does their writing, very creative.......if I asked my

national wholesale steel supplier to supply me with 'hitch steel'....they'ed

most likely laugh me off the phone & never accept my calls again.

 

Its common grade b box tube, the claimed radious is a result of the wall thickness......thicker the wall, greater the radious.

 

Not knock'in, just a chuckle over the creativity...... :chillin:

I must agree... WTF is "Hitch steel" :dunno: I just gave my old home made rock rails to MJ Jeff on this site, and they were for a LWB, I am sure he will give you the dimensions. The problem I ran inot when fabbing mine was the front extra bracing, made it so the front stand off was not in an ideal spot. But once I went LA's I moved it forward. Not to knock rocky road either, my rails weighd much more then 35#s a side, and were built out of 2x3x1/4 and I tweaked them :eek: So to put a lifetime guarantee out there on rock rails or any part that comes into contact with rocks is kinda funny :D Cause I would definately try and bend them :evil:

I can't yet comment on mounting on LWB, I can say our SWB set up is doing very well.....mounting & all........but thankyou pingpong for the

dimension offer.

 

Possibly scoring LWB this weekend, everythings in place.....just need to make the plan come together.

sorry I missed the part on the rocky road site where it said sepecifaly made for short wheel based comanches.

 

In a defense on their behalf when they refer to hitch steel they may just be putting it into simple terms. Since most people that would buy rock rails may not have or trust theire fabbing skills to make them their selves and thus not really know what it was if they wrote grade b box steel.

You obviously read the ad too fast, and missed the important stuff. They don't use ordinary hitch steel, they use INNER hitch steel -- with "astronomical" weight. (Funny -- my AISC steel handbook doesn't appear to know anything about this special grade of astronomically heavy steel, but I guess that's because structural engineers only design buildings and bridges, and not rock rails.)

 

Now I'm curious. If there is an inner hitch steel, there must also be an outer hitch steel. Which is stronger and heavier? Maybe this stuff is inferior, and to get really REALLY good rock rails we should be using "outer" hitch steel. :eek:
