front end?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering what type of axles some of you guys are running i have 33's now and want to run 35'. I don't think the d30 can hold up any ideas will be of great help. thinks, TIM

Don't quote me on this (because this is only what I read on other Forums), but I think there are a butt load of TJ's/XJ's etc and such running 35"s on D30's Pretty Hard... I think the recommendation would be to goto a quality Chromo Shaft Setup (I put AlloyUSA in my Front D30 on my TJ when I regeared/locked it). I plan on moving up to 35"s once these newer 33"s wear down a little bit.

A D44 in the front doesn't seem to be a huge improvement over a D30 and from there, you are talking D60+, 9", etc which I personally really wouldn't worry about unless I was going to go 37+, but that's just me...

I'm not sure it's possible to get a Dana 44 front done for that much. :( Unless you've got the skills to narrow it and build it yourself. But you should be able to beef up the Dana 30 a decent amount.

To keep a Dana 30 alive under 35s, I'd go with alloy shafts and maybe CTMs, a truss across the top, top quality aftermarket gears, and I'd stick with an open diff or at most a posi. That helps shock forces to move to the free side rather than concentrate on the side with the stuck tire.

actaully in the newest petersons you can get a jeep dana 44 from mopar rotor to rotor complete with a locking electric locker and 4.10 gears for 1400.

that is a steal! read the newest petersons about it! if i could find my issue i would give you the page number..

I think you're talking about the new axles under Rubi JKs. They are a 5 on 5" bolt pattern and don't exactly bolt-in, causing all sorts of issues trying to adapt them to older Jeeps.

But if they are the older Rubi axles, keep us posted. :D

1600 bucks should be way more than enough to get a 44 under there if you do some of it yourself. Get a 44 out of a bronco and rebuild it with you're choice of gears and locker. This is what i plan to do in the near future but if i won't spend anywhere near that much. I don't know all the details of the bronco 44's because i'm not ready for that swap yet i just know people who run them and they have narrow width and drivers drop

cons about dana 30:

if you kill a u-joint it takes out your shaft (usually just outer) and can potentially take out you're ball joints which will leave you stranded on the trail. the dana 30's ring gear is only 7.2 or so which leaves the pinion similar to that of a pencil with a 4.56 gear. if you plan to keep the jeep for awhile i would upgrade the axle.

Rubicon 44 isn't worth the $$$ in my eyes, you've still got all the troubles of HP30 axle shafts, unit bearings, etc. If you like the idea of the R44, which isn't a bad one, I'd keep the HP30, and find a used Warn hub conversion kit. You can then run a full time locker, you have 3wd when you break one side, and you get less wear/better mileage when you're on the street.

I wheeled the hell out of my lo-pinion D30 with 36" Swamper SX's with no problems. It should be noted that I only run the 4 banger in my TJ but also had 4.88's, a lock-right, & a Tera 4 to 1 so it had some stress on it.

Another club member swapped a hi-pinion D30 into his TJ since the hi-pinion is supposed to be stronger. He kept exploding outer shafts(4.0 with 36" swampers) so he swapped in the alloy shafts. Since then he has grenaded his locker once and ring & pinion twice. The stronger shafts have made the R&P the weak link. Not good.
