89 MJ
Make sure you're alternator can keep up with whatever you do. I'd recommend the stock 7 blade mechanical fan with a new fan clutch for starters. The late XJ efan is an upgrade over the Renix efan too.

My brand new reman had the nut back off on me and left me stranded so I don't really trust in anyways. Ive hear spal makes pretty good ones too but ive never used one

Eagle_SX4
You can get a new thermal switch for your e-fan so that it automatically kicks on earlier. I installed one when I swapped my engine and went to an open cooling system. This is the one I got it has been working great so far. It is a 200 degree switch. https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/productdetails.asp?RecID=27900 I installed it into an H.O. thermostat housing with an extended wire harness. ghetdjc320
All the above is solid advice. E fans are no replacement for the mech fan but *can* work if you upgrade coolant capacity enough to offset the diminished airflow. Options are limited in an MJ/XJ though. A solid stock system with the later model XJ e fan along with solid alternator voltage-13.8v minimum-and the 7 blade fan with HD clutch is a solid system. If you’re overwhelming the cooling system and overheating in a stock rig, sometimes a lean run condition is to blame.

Where may one procure that? Rockauto only has standard duty clutches sadly

Rockauto only has standard duty clutches sadly The 7 blade is the mechanical fan. They are an eBay find. Don’t recall exactly what they came in but I have sourced them from a couple of ZJs at the junk yard. I think they came as standard on a lot of Jeeps. The heavy duty fan clutch is also a ZJ part number. You can buy those from Hayden at your local Napa. I don’t have the part number but I’m sure some of the mementos here will chime in with it. The later model XJ e fan is a 10 blade units with curved blades. Is has excellent flow for its size. The oem Mopar or a used one are good bets. Then just ensure there’s adequate power supply. Awesome. I'll definitely check out the ZJs next time I'm at the junkyard. Thank you!
