AX-15 Spacer - Cushion to Crossmember (?)

Recommended Posts

I don't think that is for manual transmissions. When I pulled my AX-15 out of a 97 XJ, it didn't have that. My MJ has been probably 10,000 miles without one with no issue.

#27 in the image?  the one that goes with the automatic?

Yeah, the diagram seems to indicate it's for auto, but I filtered the lookup for ERH/DDQ/4WD and it shows in the list of applicable parts. That's why I'm asking, if anyone has a late 89-92 4.0/AX-15 or ever seen a rig that came with this spacer.

Thanks for confirming. The crossmember I snagged was from a 96 XJ and I didn't see one on that either. But you never know with older vehicles, people change out mounts and sometimes forget to put everything back. FWIW, if you have an AW4 and it's missing, 1/4" HDPE makes a pretty decent substitute if you don't have 1/4" mild steel plate handy.

You bet. The XJ was a 313k mile trail rig, so I can't guarantee that it hadn't been messed with either, but I would doubt that it was being that 2nd gear was out of it and it had stock gearing. I don't think it was messed with at all, just was abused. Now that I think about it more, my 90 MJ (that I forgot I owned at one point in my earlier post) had an AX-15 and definitely did not have the cushion. Granted again, it was a 238k mile truck, but seemed all stock to me.

My ‘90 does not have it and I’m the original owner, clutch replacement was done by me and I highly doubt I didn’t reinstall it.

Thanks! :beerbang:

There wasn't a spacer between cross member and mount. There is a spacer between transmission and and trans mount. .175

First, welcome to the forum - the (IMHO) greatest MJ site on the planet... please add your VIN to the registry so it can be counted and recognized. :))

I can confirm the mount plate bolted to the bottom has that riser layer on mine as well. But I think that's just part of the mount plate itself. I did keep the spacer I made handy in case I want to install it due to trans cushion sag under the weight of the transfer case. It's a common complaint of the current aftermarket/ parts house trans mounts.

The new Anchor trans mount on my Comanche was so soft that the transmission would bounce around and pop out of 2nd gear off road. After the first trip, I replaced it with an OEM mount, (still available as of 18 MOS ago). That solved the problem.

This is still a concern for me, I'm keeping an eye on it. This is what I'm lusting after for near-future upgrades:

Made with a poly durometer on the softer end from what I understand.
