a1awind
has anyone ever shot foam insulation into a rust hole then covered it with bondo for a quick fix? the reason i ask is i was talking to a rather mechanically inclined lady about how she got her 89 carolla to pass pa inspection. she sail she had a hole in the rocker so she shot in foam insulation, cut off the excess then bondo-glassed overtop. it sounded like an idea to me. DirtyComanche
As a highly temporary (read, to get you through a VI) repair it'd work great. Longer term? Hell no. There's lots of bad things you can do, and that's right up there... A lot of expanding foams are hydroscopic and cause rust. And you CAN'T bond fiberglass to metal. EVER! A thin applcation of body filler is one thing (guys argue what 'thin' is all the time, but let's say 1/16 - 1/8") as the dissimilar expansion rate does not pose much of a problem as the final product will remain flexible enough. But fiberglass is a whole new animal - it expands very little when heated, and is very rigid even in a thin application. The end result is it will de-bond from ANY metal over time. FxRacing282
and when moisture gets in the foam will act as a sponge and will take forever to dry out, thus causeing more rust in the long run. if you have a rust hole, your best bet is to mig weld some new sheetmetal ondo whatever it is thats rusted. of course cut away, sand and prime before you weld
Pete M
I know from personal experience that it's a bad, bad, bad thing to do. Made my bedside waaaay worse and rot out faster than before. :(
edman2007
My left rear fender is rotting out, the outer part of it has a huge hole above the fender flare (ive already taken them all off) and i was wondering what I should do. I don't have a welder, or really much axcess to one so I'm lost here of what i should do. If I did have a welder I would take my left front fender (dented in the front), cut out a patch and put that on. I was wondering about the whole Easy-Foam thing but i had questions too about the water retention of it.

I know, it sounds rather shallow, but there's lots of nice people out there with welders.
Pete M
Find a local 4x4 club or website. That's how I've found people to do the important welding on my truck. Some will even do it for beer. :D
FxRacing282
if you don't have a welder a ball-peen hammer, rivits and a little bondo will work. that would be better then foam anyday
edman2007
could you pm me some info on how i should secure some sheet metal to the fender?
lower jeep
please don't put foam in the bed side, like they said make friends with some one that has a welder because i had a dodge shadow that some one put foam in a rust hole before i got it and had a new paint job on it and with in 3 months it made the hole even bigger. foam is not a good choice for any thing that is going to be exposed to the elements even after drying the foam out and welding new metal in the rust started back before i got rid of the car.
