joshmillslane
My 86 4x4 is all stock as far as I can tell - no aftermarket lift. I'm looking at some craigslist rims & tires and am wondering what's the largest tire that will fit on a 15" rim without rubbing on my truck? Also, will wrangler wheels fit my jeep? Are the offsets close? Thanks in advance.
mjeff87
Stock MJ/XJ/YJ wheels are 5.25" backspacing. You can run 10.5" wide tires on the stock wheels safelyand still keep them inside the fenders.....you'll barely rub the LCA's in the front at full lock, which you can fix by adjusting the steering stops or just remember to not turn the wheel the whole way on tight turns. The real problem happens in the back, with the space between the inner sidewall and the framerail. My 31X10.5's have about 5/8" clearance. You can alleviate that and run a wider tire with either wheel spacers or wheels with less backspacing, but then you end up contacting the flares (unless you trim them). HOrnbrod
Also, will wrangler wheels fit my jeep? Are the offsets close? Thanks in advance. Some Wrangler 15" wheels (Ravines, Grizlies, etc.) have a 5" backspace and are 8" wide so they stick out a bit more and may rub the flare. Mine did not, but some do. BLHTAZ
wondering what's the largest tire that will fit on a 15" rim without rubbing on my truck? That would be about a 235/75/15. A 31x10.50x15 will go on it, but it will rub badly, therefore meaning that it does not fit. 31's need a 3" lift and a wheel with about 3.75" BS to fit without rubbing. 88JeepManche
I have 30x9.50 on my stock mj on the stock wheels with zero rub even at full flex.
Pete M
Which rims are too be used is very important here. 235s on stock steel or stock aluminum rims probably won't touch anywhere 30s on stock 6" steel rims might touch the control arms, but not too bad if they do 30s on stock 7" aluminum rims probably won't touch anywhere 31s on stock 7" aluminum rims will probably touch the control arms 31s on stock steel rims will likely touch the control arms, possibly pretty bad 30s or 31s on aftermarket rims with less-than-stock backspacing (or the stock TJ 8" rims) and you probably won't touch the control arms anymore, but the tire will probably start rubbing on the flares, possibly very badly. And this doesn't even take into account the differences in tire sizes across the various manufacturers.
Eagle
31's will fit, IMHO, 30x9.5x15 are all around better suited. Agreed Both will rub the lower control arms, though. The largest tire that (usually) fits with NO rubbing is 235/75-
joshmillslane
Thanks fr the info guys. I'll be shopping for some 235/75/15s next week maybe. I'm thinking BF Goodrich All-Terrain Radials. They are rated pretty high on tire rack and discount tire sites.
BLHTAZ
I had the BFG A/T's on mine for a short time and they sucked. The on highway ride was good, but they had no traction off the pavement at all. I don't use the MJ for trail riding, but I did get in some sand a few times and in only 4-5 inches of sand I had to use 4wd to move. I have driven through the same sand in my 2WD 2002 Ram truck, stopped in it, parked in it and drove out with no problem with Nitto Terra Grapplers on it. I have also taken th MJ in the same sand now with the Swamper TrXus M/T's and had no trouble in 2WD. I have never like BFG tires other than the Krawlers...and I never will after than experience. ProComps are always my recommendation for A/T's & M/T's ;) .
