sinned96
I need a new muffler on my stock 86 2.5L Comanche. What type should I use? I'm thinking about a flowmaster but not sure which model to use.
feerocknok
My personal recomendation for any 4-cylinder is Magnaflow. They seem to be a hair cheaper than Flowmaster, but have a far different sound. If you want a growl, go with Flowmaster. If you want a purr, go with Magnaflow. Also, expect less interior resonance with a Magnaflow. The glass packing will deaden the sound a little on the interior, while a Flowmaster will create more with your exhaust spooling through the chambers. GirsMJ86
also along these lines if you can get away with it take the cat off. with the 2.5 the cat will weaken your power output so its best to take it off if you can. alex
feerocknok
Also, for the cat, if you can't remove it, hollowing it'll help. Removing it completely will give even better flow though, and even less interior resonance.
Cabz
also along these lines if you can get away with it take the cat off. with the 2.5 the cat will weaken your power output so its best to take it off if you can. alex I sugjest that if you have a carb 4banger you can pull the cat but if you have FI DO NOT, Pull the cat I have a 4banger YJ and I had a 4banger MJ both lost bottom end power without the cat. If you have top replace the cat with a stock type replacement type and then go 2 1/2 inch exhaust from there back. The 2.5 needs a bit of back pressure to run right
GirsMJ86
The 2.5 needs a bit of back pressure to run right hey cabz what would you say that i do when i redo my 86 2.8L exhaust? I'm going dual pipes all the way with dual glasspacks. should i leave the cats on or take em off? alex
Cabz
The 2.8 is just a baby v8 :D they could care less about back pressure. I wouldn't go to crazy pipe size wise but duals will work niceley The 2.5 is just an oddball , my 4.0 MJ runs a hollow cat and she runs like a champ. My YJ ran without the cat and was a PIG
CWLONGSHOT
Many moons ago, I would knock out the stuffing out of cats....OH wait, that is another forum...  But seriously, this is not the best plan of attack, cats really do serve a purpose and its not to ruin your performance! I picked up a replacement hi-flow cat for my MJ when I first got it. Then a couple months ago, the muffler cracked! SO, in went a Cherry bomb. Sounds nice, good power and I'm LEGAL!!! I came out the back, straight. Just peeking out under the bumper with a rolled chrome tip. CW
Oizarod115
not to be ignernt er nuffn but thats how we folks in gerga do it. haha. but what exactly are glass packs? -nick
mjeff87
I was gonna ask you how you dealt with the alignment by using a straight-thru, vs. the offset of the OEM muffler. But then I noticed your pic.....not a concern for ya, huh  ? I was thinking about a cheap cherry bomb, but didn't want to tinker around with rigging up the hangers. I just buy the el cheapo universal ones that last about a year, then replace them. I got smart and started using anti-seize so I can pull them off without alot of hassle :D You might want to think about supporting the tailpipe more than just the rear hanger CW.....that's putting alot of stress on the (tiny) little flange at the cat connector. It's likely to stress crack/snap off sooner than later. You run a 2.5 or a 4.0? If 2.5, how does that thing sound on it? Jeff
sinned96
Well I work with a few muffler shops So hopefully They have the flowmaster 60 series for my truck. I can't be to picky as I'm trading some brake lathe parts for the muffler and labor
pingpong
I have been running glass packs on my rig since day one :D . Real easy, just put a turn down on the end of it as well. Cheap easy and efficient to replace if you get trail damage. I just replaced from my exhaust manifold on back, using all new parts for around 150. Might seem a lil high, but everything is still shiney and pretty
CWLONGSHOT
MJeff87, I am using the factory hangers. Its just that, that pic was snapped as I was installing and I hadn't finished buttoning it all up yet. If you look close, you will also see there is no rear muffler clamp on the glass pac CHERRY BOMB!! Here is how it looks now: I used a better quality aftermarket hanger in the very rear. You can see by the pic I moved it over a couple inches form the factory mount. I have the 4.0 and like the sound, not aweful loud and NOTHING like the ricers with the soup can exhausts!!  :x CW
DirtyComanche
I have a 4.0 and my exhaust ends just by the tranny mount... I like the sound. Annoying as hell on the highway.
feerocknok
Examples of glasspacks are Cherry Bombs, Red Hots, Magnaflow, and what the ricers run. It's a muffler that consists of a tube with holes in it, and outside the tube, and inside the case is, I believe, fiber glassing. It gives the exhaust tone, deadens sound that comes out your tailpipe, and deadens sound inside the cab. It's usually a real high flow design, compared to an open chamber muffler, like a Flowmaster or your stock muffler, but don't get me wrong, Flowmasters do flow quite amazingly. I blew my left Red Hot on my modded 350 in 2 weeks. Blaring loud, toneless noise out the left side, sounded good on the right.
